Julia POV
I grew anxious, though I feel that if I were offered, I would not accept. After twenty minutes, I was finally called back into the office.
“Hello Mrs. Reyes, sorry for the wait,” I am met with the stench of cigarette smoke and strong perfume.
“Good morning, Mr. Ellswoth”. I keep my tone even, though the smell is horrendous.
“I was looking over your resume, it is quite impressive. Though, I would like to make a few things clear here” Mr. Ellsworth leaned back in his chair, his gaze lingering a moment too long as he looked the me over. “You know, we really value team players here,” he said, his voice dropping slightly. “Sometimes, going the extra mile means more than just staying late or working weekends.” He offered a thin smile, his eyes not quite meeting mine. “I like to think of this office as a family. We take care of each other—especially those who show a little flexibility.”
He tapped his fingers on the desk, glancing at her résumé before setting it aside. “Your qualifications are impressive, but it’s personal connections that really make a difference around here,” he continued, his tone suggestive. “If you’re willing to be… accommodating, I’m sure we can find a place for you. I always keep an open door for special candidates.”
I straightened in my chair, expression firm. “I believe my qualifications and work ethic speak for themselves,” I replied cooly, meeting the boss’s gaze unflinchingly. “I’m here to contribute professionally and grow within a company that values merit and respect. If that’s not the standard here, I’m not interested in compromising my principles just to fit in.”
I slid my résume back across the table, tone unwavering. “I want a workplace that recognizes talent and dedication, not one that tests personal boundaries.” If this conversation is an example of your company culture, I’ll have to decline the opportunity.” I stood up then, gathering my things with quiet confidence, and made it clear that intimidation or manipulation would not work on me.
