I found Julia huddled on the bathroom floor, her knees drawn tightly to her chest, surrounded by the scattered contents of a tipped-over box. Her face was pale, eyes red-rimmed from tears and panic, and she was shaking so badly that her hands barely managed to clutch her robe closed around her. I knelt beside her immediately, wrapping my arms around her trembling frame and pulling her close.
“I’m here, Julia,” I whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her hair. My own heart hammered in my chest, but my voice was steady. “I’ve got you. You’re safe.” I held her tightly, rocking her gently as she fought to steady her breathing. She pressed her face into my shoulder, letting herself lean into my warmth, the solidity of my presence a lifeline in the chaos.
I brushed her hair from her face and wiped away the tears on her cheeks with the back of my hand. “The police are here,” I said quietly, making sure she heard me. “They’re ready to help us. We’re not alone in this, Julia. We’re not going to let him hurt you.” I felt her nod, a small movement, but a sign she was listening and fighting to hold on.
I helped her to her feet, steadying her as she swayed. I guided her to the sink, holding her as she rinsed her mouth and splashed cool water on her face. With every small gesture, I tried to anchor her, to remind her she wasn’t facing this nightmare alone. “Look at me,” I said, catching her gaze in the mirror. “You’re the bravest person I know. We’re going to get through this.”
She nodded again, drawing a shaky breath, and I pressed another kiss to her forehead. “I’ve already given your phone to the police. They’re going to analyze everything and do whatever it takes to protect us.” I wanted to promise her more, to shield her from every threat, but I knew all I could do now was be her rock.
I led her out of the bathroom, one arm still protectively around her shoulders. The police officers were waiting in the living room, their presence calm and professional, ready to ask questions and gather evidence. I gave Julia a reassuring squeeze. “You don’t have to do this alone,” I whispered. “I’ll be right here the whole time.”
Julia glanced up at me, her eyes still rimmed with fear but shining with gratitude. “Thank you,” she whispered hoarsely, clinging to my hand. I squeezed back, meeting her gaze with fierce determination. “Always,” I said, my voice gentle but full of conviction. “I’m not going anywhere. I’ve got you, Julia. Everything is going to be okay.”
As we sat together, waiting for the police to begin their questions, I kept a protective arm around her. I knew it would be a long road ahead, but in that moment, I was certain of one thing: together, we would face whatever darkness came our way.
