He did not bother with a link boy to light his way home from Mayfair as he would soon cross the street-lit and bustling area of St. James’. It was not a concern for his safety that lengthened his stride, but the anticipation of spending the night with Daniel. They had long ceased to worry about Daniel regularly appearing at the entrance of Jo’s lodgings in the evenings. His unthreatening compact figure, average appearance, and deferential manner made him seem unremarkable or even unmemorable. None of the gentlemen who lodged in Jo’s Orange Street quarters had mentioned opening the door to Daniel in passing, presuming he was a messenger
