Chapter 14The next morning, Jo and Ben were in deep discussion about how best to process the latest crop of applications from former soldiers in need, when Cribbins passed over a hand-delivered note. Ben opened it while still carrying on his discourse, so Jo expected it to be an additional request for help to add to the mound on his desk. But then Ben stopped mid-sentence, raised his eyebrows, and handed over the paper to Jo.
The note was from Colonel Graham and of some urgency, mentioning that a person of interest (named only by his initials and further details enclosed in a separate, easily disposable inner slip of paper) was predicted to meet another man, not yet discredited apart from his connection to the first, at Watier’s Club that evening.
