Chapter 23On that Thursday night when Armand had joined the group, after Percy and his brother had departed with Nathan, Jo and Daniel lingered at The Golden Lion.
After a full day at the hospital, Edward started to yawn. Ben had borne him off to Piccadilly so assiduously that Jo reckoned it might be a while yet before Edward got any rest.
Since Daniel was spending the night at his parents’ house, Jo was more than happy to spin out another half-hour as they finished their wine. Rather than relishing this opportunity, Daniel seemed oddly distracted and was disconcertingly unresponsive to Jo’s conversational sallies.
“I have some news,” Daniel said, looking decidedly nervous. “It could be good tidings if not exactly what we’d hoped for.”
