“Yeah the Irish call it potion, it’s basically 95% straight alcohol, we make it in a big pan in the packhouse. If you drink water the next day it makes you tipsy again.”

“Yeah it was brilliant. We got all the patients in the hospital a bottle each and they got so drunk the doctor was so mad but it was so funny”
“I remember that summer, we basically spent it in the hospital while you had chemo and the doctor went crazy because we spent our time pulling pranks on her”
“Wow you spent all summer with him?”
Mum interrupted, tears in her eyes

She chuckles and he nods
“Yes Baylee I did. He’s been my best friend for so long, our mums were best friends, they grew up in this pack so they always stayed close and we just ended up always being around each other and for some reason we just stayed close”
“Plus he is my weed supplier so I like to keep him close”
Arthur says then bite his lip and looks towards dad nervously

He leaned over and growled

He grumbled something under his breath but sighed and nodded his head
“Fine fine your right. I’ll have to try it sometime”

He turns to mum who shrugs
“Seriously sweety, how did you go ALL this time without trying it?”
She said waving up and down, he huffed looking down at her
“Excuse me it hasn’t been ALL that long, when did you smoke weed?”
She smirks at him happy with herself
“When you were being a tool, all your not wearing that, your not talking to him but also you can’t talk to me, you can’t touch me”
She says quacking her hands together in a funny voice. He growls at her and rolls his eyes
“Baylee I will not apologise for not knowing your true age one more time. Do you think it was easy for me to ignore you? You were 15 and I’m not a creep, if someone tried it on with aspen at 15 would you not go crazy? It’s not my fault you were secretly 17”
Mum chuckles and ignores him as he pouts. She loves to tease him about it because she knows it annoys him. I chuckle at mum and I take a large sip of coffee. We finish our food with easy conversations but by the time we are done Arthur is too tired to go outside so I light the fire and wrap up on the sofa with him. Luca waits until my parents are gone then he kisses us both and says goodbye. Leaving to return later when he was finished with the business stuff. When we were alone Arthur looked at me happily
“Are you ok with Luca being around?”
I frown
“Yes, are you?”
“Yes. He’s always been here, it just feels natural but you have opened both our eyes and I’ll never be able to thank you enough because of it. You gave us both what we needed when we needed it the most”
He kisses me again then lays his head on my stomach and we watch a movie cosy in front of the fire.

After watching a movie Arthur convinced me he was ok to go outside, I agreed because he did look better and there was a sofa there to rest on plus Luca had rolled him a joint before he left.
“Do you need a blanket?”
I ask him for around the 100th time over the last 2 hours
“Aspen love I’m telling you the truth, I’m fine I just need to sit down a minute. What do you think of the parts?”
I sigh but nod and smile
“They are good, I’ll need to take them apart and clean them up but it's definitely good for such a hard car to find.”

I roll me eyes
“Your worse than dad, I’ll be fine”
“I know you will, but it’s different driving on a track with other people nudging into you”

He grins and stands up taking his joint with him
“Let’s go then”
I giggle and climb into the Salk car, I drive it to the track and as soon as I enter I take off, I get a feel of the gears, then the steering, I think how they work together on the dirt track. After a few spins finding my feet I decided to try full speed.
“You ready Arthur”

I nod and we take off at full speed, she slips through the gears seamlessly as we tear through the dirt like it’s our last day on earth, I glance over at Arthur and the grin he wears on his face makes all the pain I have in my heart worthwhile.
After Around 20minutes we take a break, he lights the joint and starts to smoke it

“Not today. Maybe tomorrow”
He looks pale and it scares me
“Arthur maybe we should make a dr appointment and find out if there is anything you can’t do”
“Aspen I’m not going to live my last 2 months in fear of dying faster, I can’t do that. If something happens and I die faster then so be it”
I choke back the tears but don’t say anything, he was right after all, it would probably be better for him if he died quickly, painlessly other then suffering. I just squeeze his hand then start the car and drive us back home.
When we arrive I help Arthur out, he sways on his feet so I walk him inside to rest, I pull off my overalls and we lay in bed and watch some movies, Luca comes back late that night and I could tell he had been crying. Arthur fell asleep so I took his hand and led him outside and pushed him on a chair closing the door behind me. I light the joint and passed it to him
“What happened?”
