The problem is demons have two forms: the human-like one that they use most of the time and the demon one that can range from ogre to dragon. Dragons being the most lethal with the ability to swoop down from above and glide through water like a snake. As we raced away on our horses we could hear them gaining ground through the thick trees. The ground seemed to shake beneath us as the came closer. Their rage forces them into action. As we entered into our territory and past our first base camp, the soldiers within shouting the alarm and beginning to attack the hoard behind us. We continued to race without stopping. We only slowed a little when it became apparent that the hoard had been stopped by our army. We shared a quick smile as we made our way back to the keep. Our hearts, happy that we have won this day. We did not see the dragon before it swooped down from above plucking Rob from his saddle. Kyle shot out arrows but it was too fast. Its black scales glittering in the moonlight as it pulled him into the sky, his screams echoing through the trees.
“Kat go!” Kyle shouted as Rob's body hit the earth sending us all into a full run again. The horses raced over the earth as the black scales shimmered and circled around to come at us again. Kyle shot it only to have his arrows go flying away, the dragons hide too thick to penetrate. Allison pulled her sword out and managed to cut it as it grabbed for her as we continued to race to the keep. We were almost within range of our air weapons and it would not be able to keep up with us then. Not to mention the protective field that prevented the demon kind from entering without a talisman. Its blood dripped down on me giving me the only warning I had before I was pulled from my saddle. Kyle yelled and raced after us as it pulled me into the sky. I pulled my knife back out slashing at its claws that were wrapped around my arm. Its grip slipped and I used this to my advantage and pulled myself from its grasp, sending me tumbling to the ground. Only to be lifted again by my foot. I once again tried to s***h its claws only to have it give me a hard shake making my head spin.
“Put me down you big jerk.” I shouted and slashed before it finally dropped me again. I found myself in the lake outside of the keep. The dragon circled but unable to reach me as I had been flung across the borders into the field and it was unable to cross. Wading in the lake I watched it crash into the field, its screeching and echoing across the lake. Its black scales glimmered as the sun began to rise. The red of its eyes intently focused on me as I stared at it. It calmed some before soaring back into the sky. Kyle shouted from the shore and I pulled my gaze from the sky to my friends, Rob's death fresh on my mind as we entered the keep.
“Allison, send my condolences to your family. Tell them he fought with bravery and his death was not in vain. We have our first real victory over the demons in many years. Kyle call a council meeting at once. I must change and begin the next phase as soon as possible.” I give orders as we enter and head for my chamber. I quickly clean myself up and pull on a fresh set of black jeans and a black t-shirt. The Council hates when I don't wear dresses but we are at war and I refuse to wear a dress because some old man thinks it is proper.
Entering the war room I find myself bombarded with questions and outrage.
“Be quiet. I have come to address all your concerns. Take a seat gentleman and we can get started.” I don't wait for a reply but make my way to the head of the table. “We have won a great victory tonight and I refuse to listen to you all talk to me as if I am a child. I am the heir to the throne and will be named Queen in less than two days. I make the decisions and I live with them. The demon King is no more. This leaves the heir Aidan to succeed him. It is my hope to begin treaty talks. The hair has to want to end this as badly as we do. His father may have been a tyrant but there is a chance we can talk to Aiden.”
“You are foolish to believe a demon will ever talk peace!” The shouting began. I allow them to continue for a few moments before interrupting again.
“Enough! I am not here to discuss it. I am here to state what will happen. Send a letter to the prince and make plans for the treaty meeting. Place it on neutral ground and make it happen before my coronation. The death of the king will have them at a disadvantage. This is the end of this discussion. Let me know his reply the minut it comes in. I have to prepare for the coronation and I don't want to hear another thing about it.” I turned on my heel and walked out of the room leaving the stunned council behind.
“Great speech. Do you really think he will want to end the war?” Kyle greated me as I entered the hall.
“I am not sure but it will allow me to see where he stands at least.”I shrug heading to my chambers. “Will you see to it that my things are moved to my parents' old room. It is time to take charge. I need to show that I am ready for this.”
“Yes I will have it done this afternoon as well as my things to the guards quarters. You will need to pick a few more people for your personal guard as well as an advisor as soon as you can. Judging by the room back there I would do it before the meeting with the prince.” he pointed out.
“Allison will be my adviser and Nick and Luke will be added to my guards, I can meet with them in one hour. I know they lost their brother but I think they know what we are dealing with and will understand after all their father was my dad's closest advisor.”
“I will send them to you. Your room or the one you will be taking?”
“The one I am taking. That will be all Kyle I have to be fitted for this ridiculous dress. Send the taylor to my office.” I called as I entered the office and began to sort through my father's paperwork. I needed to bring this under control and show them I could handle what needed to be done.
Ten Minutes into the paperwork and the taylor knocked and entered when I bid.
“You have forty minutes to get what you need before I head to my next meeting. I need this dress to say fierce and yet elegant. I want there to be room for my weapons and the skirt must be removable. I want it made within a day's time. I do not care about the expense, it must be done. Understood?” I asked in a collective tone.
“Yes, Sovereign.” She stammered before beginning her work. I stood on a raised platform as she took my measurements and her assistant wrote everything down. She was quick and managed to finish a few minutes early. “My sovereign, what color should the dress be?”
“Make it gold and black, after all I am still in mourning for my loss and gold to show our unity in all things. Also please leave room for the royal crest to be added.” I dismissed her before setting out to my new chambers. I entered the sitting room to find my friends already waiting.
“Thank you Kyle. Allison how are your parents doing with everything? If any of you need anything please do not hesitate to ask.”
“Rob knew the risk just as we all did, he died a hero to our people and that is all any of us can ask for. Why is it that you called us here?”
“Allison, I hope you will do me the honor of becoming my advisor.”
“Girl, I thought you would never ask.” She smiled, giving me a hug.
“Also Nick and Luke I wish to add you to my personal guard. There is no family I trust more than yours.”
“It would be an honor, my Sovereign .”Luck said as Nick jumped up and gave me a hug kissing my cheek.
“Nick, you can't do that when we are in public. Things will be a bit different but I think we can be ourselves when we are alone. Please make arrangements for your things to be moved to your new rooms. Allison you will be taking the suit in the left tower. That way your parents can stay in the right tower and not have to uproot their lives with all the changes going on.
“Look at you already dishing out orders like a queen.” Nick laughed.
“She is going to have your head one day, Nick.” Luke punched his brother in the arm.
“Yeah, yeah… Kyle, will you see to the arrangements?”
“Of course, is there anything else you need before I go?”
“No, I think that is all I need today. I will be spending the rest of the day here. I need to get my things in order and find a place for my parents' stuff. You all have much to do. I will see you at dinner. I can announce your new positions tonight at the banquet.” They all slipped out the door to get everything done. As I entered my bed chamber allowing myself time to adjust to how my life was going now and time to think of what needed to be done. I took my time setting out my things, placing them how I wanted them and taking some of my parents' things into trunks to keep. I then chose a dinner gown and rang for my maid, from there we proceeded to turn me from a warrior to a princess fit for a ball. The banquet was being held in my honor and though my dresses were mainly black for morning I still allowed the gold and blue royal colors to show. Kyle met me at the door as I made my way out of the room.
“You look great, you know.”
“Thanks.” I smiled blushing slightly.
“All the arrangements have been done as you requested and we have started shifts for your guard. I think you will need to add a few more but for now this will work.”
“Thanks Kyle. I knew I could count on you to get things done for me. Is there any news on a reply from the prince?” I asked hopeful
“I think I came in a few moments ago, you should be getting the information momentarily.” He smiled “though I know those old geezers are going to try and throw you off tonight so be careful in there.” he added.
We entered the hall as the announcer shouted out my entrance and I made my way to the raised throne. I would be required to sit there and greet everyone as they entered before the dinner was served. I took my seat and was immediately faced with Allison's parents who smiled and wished me well. After them, there was nothing but a blur as I nodded and smiled, calling greetings and making small talk. Dinner was served at six on the dot where I was able to leave the throne and finally get something to eat. Allison's parents sat to my right then Allison to my left the council sat just after them followed by the rest of the party. Once the first course was served I was able to relax slightly though I knew I could not do so completely. Life at court has taught me one thing above all else, they are always watching.
Once the desert had been finished I stood and called for attention. “As many of you may have noted. Many changes have taken place today. I would like to announce Lady Allicon Tideslong as my official adviser. May her wisdom be as invaluable as her fathers was to mine. Furthermore her brothers Nick and Luke have joined my personal guard, may their vision never be clouded and their sword never fail.” I took a moment for applause and murmures quiet before continuing. “The Demon king has fallen. We have now taken the first steps to end this war in generations.” This time the cheers grew until I raised my hands to silence them. “I have sent word to the demon prince and hope to meet and come to an agreement. In the meantime it seems fighting has stopped on both sides as we mourn our dead.”
“Why not just attack? The demons will never agree to peace!” one councilman's voice sounded above the rest.
“Councilman Seal, I know you and I do not see eye to eye on this, but I will not back down. Our goal is an end to the bloodshed and a way to bring peace to future generations. However, if an agreement can not be reached, the fighting will continue and we will be swift to strike.” The crowd clapped and cheered. “That being said I received word the prince had replied. I specifically asked for this information to be sent to me immediately. Yet here it is almost two hours later and nothing has been brought to my attention. Should I be worried?” I smiled as he visibly gulped.
“I simply did not want to ruin your evening. I have it in the war room as we speak.”
“In that case I will leave you all as my attention is needed. Alison please come with me. Council you will not be needed in this discussion I will call should I need you.” With that I exited the room, my guard and Alison trailing behind. Once the doors were closed behind us I let out a sigh.
