CHAPTER ONE

Olivia Reed took a deep breath as she settled into her new role at the Hayes estate. The grandeur of the mansion still felt overwhelming, but she reminded herself that she was here for Emma. That was all that mattered. She had faced much worse in life, and she would not let intimidation get the best of her. Her morning began with Emma’s routine. The little girl was quiet but observant, always watching Olivia as if trying to figure her out. Olivia understood that trust had to be earned, especially with children who had endured loss. Alexander Hayes, despite his distant nature, clearly cared for his daughter. Olivia could see it in the small, subtle ways he looked at Emma, in the way he softened when speaking to her. However, his manner with Olivia was entirely different—cool, professional, and detached. “Miss Reed,” Mrs. Hawthorne’s voice drew Olivia’s attention as she entered the spacious kitchen where Olivia and Emma sat having breakfast. “Mr. Hayes has requested a meeting with you in his office after Emma’s lessons.” Olivia stiffened. A meeting with her boss? So soon? She wasn’t sure if she should be worried. She had done everything right so far—at least, she thought she had. Was he dissatisfied with her already? “Alright,” Olivia said, keeping her voice even. “I’ll be there.” Emma tugged at her sleeve, her brown eyes filled with curiosity. “You’re meeting Daddy?” “Yes,” Olivia said, offering her a reassuring smile. “But I’ll be back before you know it.” Emma nodded, accepting the answer, and returned to her breakfast. Once Emma was settled with her lessons for the morning, Olivia made her way to Alexander’s office. The large mahogany doors loomed before her, adding to the tension swirling in her stomach. She raised a hand and knocked. “Come in.” His deep voice sent a shiver through her, and she pushed the door open to find him seated behind a massive desk, his expression unreadable. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, casting a golden hue over the space. “Sit,” he instructed, gesturing to the chair across from him. Olivia obeyed, clasping her hands in her lap to keep them from fidgeting. Alexander leaned back in his chair, studying her. “How are you settling in?” “Well, sir,” Olivia answered. “Emma is wonderful. I’m enjoying getting to know her.” He nodded, his expression still unreadable. “Emma is… a special child. She has been through a lot. I expect her to be treated with the utmost care.” “Of course,” Olivia said earnestly. “I understand that she needs patience and consistency.” Alexander’s sharp gaze held hers for a moment before he finally said, “Good. Because if you prove incapable, I won’t hesitate to replace you.” His words stung, but Olivia refused to let them shake her. Instead, she met his gaze head-on. “I won’t let you down, Mr. Hayes.” Something flickered in his eyes—surprise, perhaps? Amusement? Whatever it was, it was gone as quickly as it appeared. “We’ll see,” he said, dismissing her with a nod. As Olivia left his office, she exhaled the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. One thing was certain—working for Alexander Hayes was not going to be easy. But Olivia had never backed down from a challenge, and she wasn’t about to start now. Days passed, and Olivia began to fall into a rhythm at the Hayes estate. Emma slowly started opening up to her, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. The little girl had a sharp mind and a kind heart, but Olivia could sense the loneliness in her. One evening, after reading Emma to sleep, Olivia found herself wandering through the house. The mansion was eerily quiet at night, the kind of silence that seemed almost unnatural. She paused by the large windows overlooking the vast garden, taking in the serene view. “You’re still awake.” The deep voice startled her, and she turned to find Alexander standing a few feet away. He was dressed more casually than usual, in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing strong forearms. The sight made Olivia’s pulse quicken. “I was just admiring the view,” she said, forcing herself to stay composed. He stepped closer, his gaze following hers. “It is beautiful at night.” Silence stretched between them, thick with something unspoken. Olivia shifted uncomfortably. “I should get some rest.” Alexander nodded. “Goodnight, Miss Reed.” “Goodnight, Mr. Hayes.” As she walked away, she couldn’t ignore the way her heart pounded in her chest. Something about Alexander Hayes unsettled her in ways she wasn’t ready to admit. And the way he looked at her just now… She needed to be careful. Because getting too close to a man like him could be dangerous—not just for her job, but for her heart. As the weeks passed, Olivia and Alexander continued to navigate their unusual dynamic. He remained distant, but there were moments—fleeting, stolen moments—where she thought she saw something more beneath his cold exterior. A lingering glance. A softened gaze. A tension in the air whenever they were alone. And despite her best efforts, Olivia found herself drawn to him. One afternoon, as Olivia and Emma played outside in the garden, laughter filling the air, she noticed Alexander watching from a distance. Their eyes met, and for the first time, she saw it clearly—something beyond duty and professionalism. Something undeniably real. Olivia’s breath caught. She was in trouble. Because she wasn’t just falling for her boss. She was falling for a man who might never be able to love her back.
