It'd been two days since Lisa's party, and I couldn't get Christian out of my head. There was something intriguing and dangerous about him. It was the way he moved through the room with an air of confidence that bordered on arrogance and the sharp glint in his eyes that made you feel he was always two steps ahead. His stories were filled with thrilling exploits and questionable choices that hinted at a life lived on the edge. Even his laugh had an undercurrent of recklessness that both fascinated and unsettled me. A strange feeling overtook me immediately after our encounter on the patio. I felt excitement and anxiety as if drawn to a mystery I couldn't quite grasp. My thoughts kept returning to his intense gaze and enigmatic smile, leaving me restless and eager for answers. It was as if meeting him had awakened something within me that I couldn't ignore. The last words he spoke to me were still vivid as if I had just heard them the day before.
'I am sure we will see each other again soon.'
His words had sent a chill down my spine, one that I could never forget, along with a burning inside of me I couldn't ignore. Shaking my head, I glanced at the clock on the nightstand, groaning when I saw it was seven a.m. It had already been two hours since my mother had left for work. A few months after we moved here, she took a job in a nearby warehouse. 'A packer' was what she was called, and only the goddess knew what that meant. It was so annoying to talk to my mom about her job. All she did was complain about her back and how unfairly she was treated. Instead of complaining, I told her to quit if she genuinely felt this way. Boy, did that irritate her.
Julie got a job in the insurance industry. I thought sitting behind a desk all day, taking calls, and talking about insurance was the dullest thing you could do all day, yet Julie seemed to enjoy it. Julie would usually be gone from eight a.m. to seven p.m., which to me wasn't ideal.
As soon as I graduated high school, I decided to go into cosmetology. However, I couldn't afford it at the time. My mother said I'd never succeed in such a field and that it was a waste of time. To shut her up, I took a business management class instead; that's where I met Lisa. My hatred for her started the moment I met her. Lisa had it all: money, a house, and social status. Considering Lisa was established in society, it only made sense to use her to my advantage. However, I developed a soft spot for her as time went on. When I told Lisa I was looking for work, she happily asked her father to get me an interview. She was a great friend, pretty much the only one I had. Despite the warmth of our friendship, I couldn't entirely shake the feeling that my ambitions might one day overshadow my loyalty to her. Lisa had opened doors for me, but if ever a choice had to be made between our friendship and my goals, I feared I might betray her to seize an opportunity. It was a harsh truth, but in a world where success felt like a distant dream, sometimes the path to it demanded more than I was willing to admit.
Even so, that dinner party turned out to be the best thing ever. After meeting Christian, I knew he was the one. He had everything I could ever want and need: money, power, respect. Being with Christian offered a future filled with financial security and social standing, things I had always yearned for but never truly believed were within my reach. His influence could open doors I never knew existed, allowing me to easily climb the social ladder. Though the thought of leaving everything and everyone behind pained me, the allure of a life free from struggle and full of possibilities was too tempting to resist.
My smile spread across my face as I got up and headed to the bathroom to prepare for the day. After showering and getting dressed, I opted to go for a walk. So I went to the park to stroll around. There was a chill in the air, yet the rays of the sun kept you warm. The path from my old apartment to the park was lined with towering trees, their leaves whispering secrets in the gentle breeze. The sidewalks were uneven, cracked from years of wear, yet they held a certain charm as if each crack told a story of the people who had walked there before. As I approached the park, the sound of children playing and the sight of families gathered for picnics filled the air, painting a picture of contentment and community amidst the urban landscape.
"You seem quite happy today, and the fact that you're walking means something's up," Storm's voice echoed in my mind.
I was never fond of walking. Women like me shouldn't have to walk, in my opinion. The problem is that my mother did not earn enough to buy a car. Even if she did, it wouldn't be one I'd ever get into.
"You know why I'm happy—and to be honest, I wouldn't even call it happy; I'd say excited," I said.
"Is this excitement related to any particular individual?" she asked sarcastically.
"Maybe, but I'm curious why you don't like him. Anything you want to share?" I asked, confused.
"Well, we'd be in over our heads, but I'm game if you want to pursue him. Just make sure we play this right," Storm replied.
"Don't worry, we always calculate everything with precision, haven't we?" I reminded her. After a moment's pause, Storm sighed and retreated into the depths of my mind.
Lost in my own world, I kept walking. As I reached the park's center, I quickly looked around before heading towards the outer forest. Technically, it was the pack border, and going beyond it wasn't allowed. Mr. Turner was super strict about it. It's probably worth mentioning that Lisa's father, Michael Turner, is the Alpha of the Lightborne pack. It's another reason I envied her. Not only is Lisa rich, she's the Alpha's daughter. As soon as I found out who she was, I was determined to make friends with her. Being besties with the Alpha's daughter had its perks, which I took full advantage of. Of all the benefits I enjoyed the most, walking past the pack borders was the best. Many who tried to venture outside the pack's boundaries were captured and imprisoned by Alpha Turner's guards. I, however, was always overlooked.
Beyond the pack border, an entire field of willow trees and wildflowers spread across the landscape. Beyond the field, there was a cave that led to a waterfall. It was peaceful and beautiful, and I found it the perfect place to gather my thoughts. The best part about coming here was that no one knew about this amazing place, and I owe that to Mr. Turner for his lovely rules. As I approached the cave, I caught the scent of Indonesian Nutmeg, Sichuan Pepper, and Pink Pepper. There was something hypnotizing about it. As I glanced around the empty field, I couldn't place where it came from. However, it made Storm come forward, only to retreat.
"Is everything okay with you?" I asked, gazing across the field.
"Yes and no," Storm answered.
"So what does that mean?" I asked, irritated by her lack of explanation.
"It means whatever's causing that smell can hide from me," she explained. "Whatever's out there doesn't want us to see it."
"I don't care what it is as long as it doesn't interfere with my day or plans," I replied, proceeding into the cave.
The sound of water in the distance filled my ears as I walked through the semi-lit cave. A few moments later, I was at the waterfall. There was something beautiful yet mysterious about it. A small pool of water lay below, the darkness of which was enough to capture your inner thoughts as you stared into it. Yet, it was also intriguing enough to make you want to return to it over and over again.
As I sat down and watched the water flow over the edge of the rock and into the pool, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, laid back, and let the serenity wash over me. The gentle roar of the waterfall mingled with the soft rustling of leaves in the breeze, creating a symphony of nature's sounds. The scent of damp earth and moss hung in the air, mingling with the floral aroma carried from the field beyond. As I lay there, the cool mist from the waterfall caressed my skin. The occasional splash of water was refreshing against the warmth of the sun filtering through the cave's entrance. I was lost in a peaceful state when suddenly, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. Opening my eyes, I looked up to see Christian standing over me with a sly smirk on his face.
"Miss Salvatore, what a pleasant surprise."
