Chapter 5

592 Words
The day I went out on the case, the sky was overcast. Ana followed me like a shadow, her eyes darting around nonstop. I didn't have time to pay attention to her. Inside the abandoned chemical plant, I tracked down a hidden compartment based on the clues. The key evidence in the serial killings was most likely inside. Our entire unit had been burning ourselves out on this case for far too long. But before I could feel any relief, a dull thud sounded behind me. The killer had shown up. My heart dropped. I instinctively called out for Ana to hide, but when I turned, she was gone. A chill ran through me. Acting fast, I shoved the USB drive containing all the case files deep into the c***k of the hidden compartment. I had just hidden it when voices came from outside. A rough male voice growled, "Where's the evidence? Where's the cop you were talking about?" "I saw her with my own eyes! She just went in! The evidence is on her. It's enough to clear you!" That certain, unwavering female voice made my blood freeze. It was Ana. Footsteps drew closer, right along the wall. "b***h, there's no one here. You messing with us?" The killer's voice was thick with killing intent. I heard Ana's trembling plea. "P-please, don't kill me. I really saw her go in…" To save herself, she began to undress. The rustle of fabric, the disgusting sounds that followed. She clung to them shamelessly. "As long as you don't kill me… I'll give you anything…" My stomach churned. Hands shaking, I turned on the micro recorder in my pocket and captured everything. I didn't know how much time had passed before the obscene noises finally stopped. Just as I thought I might survive, one of them knocked on the wall. "There's space behind this. A hidden compartment!" All the blood drained from my body. The moment they started smashing it open, I threw the recorder into the c***k as well, then curled up in the corner, trembling uncontrollably. The door was forced open. Several men rushed in. The moment they saw me, Ana's face twisted. She pointed at me and screamed, "It's her! She must have hidden the evidence!" They tied me up and used every method they had to torture me. I clenched my teeth and refused to say a word. Seeing that, Ana leaned close to one of them and spoke in a cold voice I could hear clearly. "She won't talk. Just kill her. We'll find it ourselves. Stage it as her committing suicide out of guilt. I'll be the victim. We'll say she tried to silence me." Under her instigation, they stabbed me to death. Then Ana picked up the knife still dripping with my blood. Without a change in expression, she cut into her own skin, calmly constructing her story. "Lila tried to cover for the killer…" "She even tried to kill me to silence me. I barely managed to take the knife from her…" Her story didn't hold up. But Sean, the criminal investigation expert, believed her. He nailed me to a pillar of shame, leaving me condemned even after death. My bones and the truth were buried beneath the ruins for seven years. I hovered in midair, watching Sean and his family with empty detachment. They were at the mall with the two kids, getting ready to see a newly released animated movie. My mother held Ana's child in her arms, a satisfied smile on her face.
