WHISPERS IN THE HALLWAY

491 Words
CHAPTER 2 Faith moved carefully through the hallways of Horizon High, trying to memorize locker numbers, classroom directions and the general rhythm of the bustling school.Every step seemed louder than it should, every laugh and whisper more piercing . Students stared. Some nudged their friends, pointing discreetly. Others simply shot glances her way, sizing her up like she was a new player in a complicated game she didn't know rules to. She passed a group of girls huddled near the lockers. One of them whispered something, then giggled .Faith's stomach tightened, she could feel the tension in the air .She had heard the phrase "first impression lasts forever ", but she hadn't realized how literal it could feel in high school. Rounding a corner, she spotted Chloe Bennett again. This time Chloe leaned against a locker, arms crossed ,smirk in place. She watched Faith with intensity that made Faith pause mid-step. 'Why is she staring like that?'.Faith thought. Faith decided to ignore her and moved towards the staircase. She needed to find her first classroom before things got overwhelming. As she climed the steps ,she noticed the walls were covered with posters, clubs, school events and achievements. Every poster seemed like a small reminder that Horizon High had rules and expectations she didn't fully understand yet. By the time she reached her first class,Faith's heart was still racing. She entered quietly, scanning the room.Students whispered to each other as she walked in,and a few stared openly. The teacher,a middle-aged woman with sharp glasses and a firm voice nodded at Faith. "Ah you must be Faith Campbell.Welcome.Take a seat anywhere you like". Faith found an empty spot near the middle. She placed her bag on the floor, trying to appear calm. But the whispers didn't stop.Every glance felt like a test ,and every small smirk or frown seemed to carry a hidden meaning she couldn't quite read. Lunchtime arrived faster than she expected. Faith walked into the cafeteria, clutching her tray. The noise hit her immediately, students shouting, laughing and lining up for food. She spotted table with clusters of students, popular girls at one, athletes at another and scattered small groups. 'Where do I sit ?' ,she thought. Her eyes swept across the room. Before she could decide, a friendly looking girl waved at her."Hey you can sit here if you want!", she said, motioning to an empty chair in her group.Faith smiled, relived and walked over. As she joined the group, she noticed Chloe sitting at another table, talking and laughing with her friends ,yet occasionally shooting glances in Faith's direction. The smirk never left Chloe's face. Faith realized quickly, she wasn't invisible here, not yet.And that was not always a good thing. The rest of the afternoon passed in a blurbof classes and observations. Walking out into the emptying hallways,Faith paused near her locker. She looked down the corridor, imagining all the stories being told about her already. The glances were real. And the games...they were just the beginning. 'Tomorrow is going to be harder, but I'm ready ', she said to herself.
