Chapter 3: The First Battle

233 Words
Chris turned toward the sound. Smoke rose from the trees. He ran toward it—heart pounding—until he saw a group of adventurers locked in battle with a massive beast, its skin covered in stone-like scales. “Hold the line! Its core is exposed!” shouted a woman with crimson hair. The creature swung its tail, slamming one of the adventurers into a tree. Chris froze. He didn’t know who they were or what this world even was… but he couldn’t stand there doing nothing. The sword in his hand vibrated, whispering in his mind: > “Wield me, Voidwalker.” He raised it instinctively. The air around him darkened, and violet sparks erupted from the blade. He swung once— —and reality itself seemed to c***k. A black crescent of energy tore through the air, slicing clean through the beast. It let out a distorted scream before disintegrating into nothing but dust. The adventurers fell silent. Their eyes turned to him—fearful, awestruck, confused. Chris stared at his blade, trembling. “What… did I just do?” The crimson-haired woman stepped forward, still breathing heavily. “That sword… I’ve never seen anything like it. Who are you?” He hesitated, looking down at his reflection in the blade’s dark surface. “I… don’t know,” he said quietly. “But I think I wasn’t supposed to exist.”
