The silence was shattered by the loud thunders of approaching footsteps of Ethan Connor, one of the top five richest men in New York City, known for his arrogant and rude attitude,each step he took was a declaration and a bold pronouncement that echoed through the silence, i trembled and the glass cup in my in my hands shattered,its delicate form surrendering to the unforgiving floor,like a fallen tear,it splintered into a thousand tiny shrads.panic wrapped around my soul, squeezing and stealing the breath from my lungs and the calm from my mind,i held my chest in fear with my trembling hands and my heart beating two times faster than the normal rate, “damn!" I cursed silently,i had suffered to get a job as a maid in this mansion after alot of rejections from other houses,i was lucky to be accepted here and i am not about to ruin this golden opportunity due to my clumsy attitude.
Emily Gray! A voice thundered my name,jacking me away from my thoughts, what have you done? You were just hired some seconds ago and you go ahead destroying things that your whole generational income cannot afford! The house keeper thundered at me,i stammered as i was choked by my own spit, cold chills of embarrassment ran through my spine,i tried to say something but words seemed to fail me,i opened my mouth yet again hoping to find the courage to say something, even if it was an apology because i dare not say a word other than apology knowing fully well that he was right, even if my whole family was sold together with everything we owned,it would not be able to afford a thing in this mansion,filled with fear and regret of what i had just done,i found the courage and finally words came out my mouth and i muttered “ i am sorry sir" bowing my head as a sign of respect, and sincererity, he hissed and handed me a broom to sweep off the tiny shattered particles of the glass cup i had dropped and stormed out of the kitchen,i let out a loud sigh of relief as hot air came out my nostrils,i have been holding my breath all this while i was being yelled out.i quickly snapped out of my thoughts and got back into work cleaning up the mess i had made,then i remembered that i haven't been given the lists of things to do,i check my phone and realized i had been sent a message on my emails stating that i cook, clean and make the bed.soon it was time to head home and i picked up my purse,boarded a taxi and headed straight to my boyfriend's apartment.
On getting there, from two steps away from the door,i could hear low rumbling laughter of my boyfriend and a female from the apartment,i was consumed with fury and stormed in, Mason!! I screamed on top of my lungs, “how could you?" I manage to say as i felt sting of tears threatening to fall off my eyes but i know better than to give a cheating partner the satisfaction of seeing me cry, I stormed out not wanting to hear anything he had to say.i couldn't head back home, home has never been a peaceful place for me,my poor dad drinks himself to stupor and yells unnecessarily, telling me how much he detest having a daughter and regret not having a son,“ if i had bore a son,he would have worked hard and bring me out of this poverty" he would say, the thought of this made my knees weak,i missed my mom, she would have been here to comfort and defend me from my abusive father,i thought, at least it what people who have experience mother's love say about their mother, unfortunately for me,i have not experienced such love,i was told she left me in the cold wicked world alone few hours after she gave birth to me.
With shaking breath I called sarah,sarah has been my friend since childhood, she stood up for me in our secondary school when ever i was bullied,with sarah i never missed having a sister because she was one. Hey babes i heard from the other end of the phone,sarah had picked her call,i am sleeping over at your place tonight i said in between shaking breath.The man is a monster! sarah yelled after i had narrated all that had happened,she wrapped her hands around me pulling me into her warm embrace to comfort me and led me to a room in her apartment, you can stay here for as long as you want she said as she helped me lay on the bed.
I couldn't sleep as i found myself reminiscing on what had happened today,i cringed in embarrassment from what happened at work and then my thoughts drifted to the betrayal that my eyes had witnessed,Mason and i had been in a relationship for two years now and he heartlessly did this to me, this is just too much sad event in a day,i said to myself as i sobbed.soon the sky transformed into a deep grey, signalling an impending storm. Cloud converged, their gentle humming a clear warning that it was going to rain,the aue buzzed with expectation,the first droplets began to fall,and more that it looked like the sky was weeping, quenching the earth's thirst,i wrapped myself in the softness or the duvet and drifted off to sleep.
The alarm's ear-buzz jolted me out of sleep,sarah works as a nanny and had already gone to work,i hurriedly took my shower,had a slice of toast bread and booked a taxi to work,i am supposed to resume by 7am but here i am at the gate at 7:30 am, this is not a good impression i thought to myself, rubbing my hands as i began to feel sudden chill due to intense fear of the unknown,i had slept off after crying myself to sleep and woke up late,i rang the bell button again eagerly waiting for response,and alas! The gate was open,i heaved out a sign of relive but i know there is trouble awaiting for me,i breathed in, waiting for the house keeper to scold or yell at me as i hurriedly ran into the building, I collided with a towering figure and stumbled, loosing my footing,i fell but was quickly saved as his powerful arms enveloped my tiny waist, drawing me into the safe harbor of his broad, chiseled chest. The warmth of his skin radiated through the crisp whit shirt he wore,and i felt tiny against the expansive plane of his torso. Our eyes met ati felt the jolt of electricity that ran through his green eyes, like a flash of lightening on a stormy night…
