Chapter 17

1124 Words
NATHAN I'm still standing near the stairs when Sophie runs out the front door. I watched the whole thing. Watched Tyler and Marcus circle her like sharks. Watched them tear into her with that comment about losing fifty pounds. Watched her face crumble. And I didn't say a word. I just stood there. Silent. Like always. "Dude, what's your problem?" Marcus asks, walking back toward me. "You've been weird all night." I don't answer. I'm still staring at the door Sophie disappeared through. "Nathan." I turn. Chloe is standing in front of me, and she looks furious. "What the hell is wrong with you?" she snaps. "What?" "You just stood there," she says, her voice rising. "You didn't say a single word while your friends destroyed my sister." "I didn't—" "You didn't do anything," Chloe interrupts. "Which is exactly the problem." Tyler steps forward. "Whoa, Chloe, we were just messing around—" "Messing around?" Chloe whirls on him. "You told her she'd be hot if she lost fifty pounds. How is that messing around?" "It was a joke," Marcus says, but he sounds less confident now. "It wasn't a joke to her," Chloe snaps. "Sophie never comes to parties. She never puts herself out there. And tonight she did. She showed up in clothes that made her feel good, and you tore her apart for it." She turns back to me, and her eyes are blazing. "And you. You just watched." "I didn't say anything," I say, but even as the words leave my mouth, I know how weak they sound. "Exactly," Chloe says. "You didn't say anything. After years of making her life hell, you finally had a chance to do the right thing, and you stayed silent." "That's not fair—" "Fair?" Chloe's voice cracks. "You've spent years bullying my sister. You made jokes about our dad being gone when he was dying. You made her feel like she had to disappear just to survive school. And tonight, when she finally tried to be visible, you let your friends humiliate her." The room has gone quiet. People are staring now. "I didn't know about your dad," I say quietly. "That's not an excuse," Chloe says. "You didn't know because you never bothered to find out. You just decided Sophie was an easy target and ran with it." She's right. I know she's right. "And you know what the worst part is?" Chloe continues, her voice softer now. "I'm just as bad as you." I blink. "What?" "I ignored her," Chloe says. "For years. I knew she was struggling. I knew she was grieving. I knew people like you made her life miserable. And I didn't do anything because it was easier to pretend I didn't notice." She looks at Tyler and Marcus. "So yeah, you guys are assholes. But Nathan?" She turns back to me. "You're worse. Because Sophie thought maybe—just maybe—you were starting to see her differently. And tonight you proved she was wrong." The words hit me like a punch to the gut. "Where is she?" I ask. "Outside," Chloe says. "And if you're smart, you'll leave her alone." But I can't. I have to try. I push past Chloe and head for the front door. --- Sophie is standing on the sidewalk with River and Chloe when I step outside. River sees me first. "Nope," he says, stepping in front of Sophie. "Absolutely not." "I just want to talk to her," I say. "You've done enough talking," River snaps. "Or not talking, I guess. Since that's your specialty." Sophie looks up at me, and the expression on her face makes my chest ache. She's not crying anymore. She just looks... tired. "Sophie," I start. "I'm sorry—" "Don't," she says quietly. "I should have said something," I continue. "I should have stopped them." "Yeah," Sophie says. "You should have." "I didn't know what to say—" "You didn't have to say anything profound, Nathan," Sophie interrupts. "You just had to care enough to tell them to stop." I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. "I thought maybe you were different," Sophie says, and her voice is so quiet I almost don't hear her. "After the community center. After you saw me actually doing something instead of just being the girl you made fun of. I thought maybe you were starting to see me as a person." "I do—" "No, you don't," Sophie says. "Because if you did, you would have said something tonight. You would have told your friends to back off. But you didn't. You just stood there and let it happen." "I'm sorry," I say again, because I don't know what else to say. "I know you are," Sophie says. "But sorry doesn't fix this, Nathan. Sorry doesn't undo years of you making me feel like I had to disappear just to survive." River puts his arm around Sophie's shoulders. "Come on," he says gently. "Let's get you home." Sophie nods and turns away from me. "Sophie—" "Leave her alone, Nathan," Chloe says, stepping between us. "You've done enough." I watch them walk to River's car. Watch Sophie climb into the passenger seat without looking back. And I realize something that makes me feel sick: I've spent years teaching Sophie that people would hurt her if she let herself be seen. Tonight, she finally let herself be seen. And when they hurt her, I proved she was right. --- I go back inside. The party is still going. Music still blasting. People still laughing and dancing like nothing happened. Like Sophie didn't just get destroyed in the middle of Jake's living room. Tyler and Marcus are back by the stairs, talking to some girls from the volleyball team. They don't even look guilty. I used to love this. The noise. The chaos. The feeling of being at the center of everything. But right now, it all feels hollow. I think about Sophie going home. About River and Chloe comforting her while I stand here in the middle of a party that suddenly feels meaningless. I think about the way she looked at me outside. Not angry. Just... disappointed. Like she'd expected better from me and I'd let her down. And the worst part is, she's right. I grab my keys and head for the door. "Yo, Nathan!" Tyler calls after me. "Where you going?" I don't answer. I just leave. Because for the first time in my life, I don't want to be here. Don't want to be the guy who stands by while people get hurt. I want to be better than this. I just don't know if I can be.
