Emilia's POV
"Go inside Sweetie." I said to Alicia and watched as she climbed the stairs to her room.
Shutting the door behind me , I stepped out to find him staring at me.
"So?" He asked, his expression getting serious.
"So what? She looks nothing like you Derek and don't get funny ideas in that head of yours."
"Emilia."
"Don't Emilia me, this is not the office and trust me, I won't be nice with my replies. What are you doing here for goodness sake? How did you find my place?" I asked trying to calm myself.
He rubbed his hair and brought down his palm to rub his face "I followed you."
"You did what? You have been stalking me? Are you nuts? What part of your job description as the boss allows you to stalk your worker?" I asked angrily.
"None and I'm really sorry for that, I didn't get a chance to ask how you've been back there and I decided to stop by."
"Stop by like we have a relationship that allows you to? Please leave, there's nothing to see or talk about and I'll really appreciate if you don't come here ever again."
He took several steps backwards "Emilia, I don't mean any harm and we have a lot to talk about, we won't be able to do that if you keep chasing me away."
Was he nuts? Is boundary a foreign language to him.
"Please just go."
"It won't even take an hour, just hear me out."
I couldn't, he was still Derek, the man who had cheated on me, he had promised that he wouldn't be like the rest but had turned out to be exactly what he claimed not to be, what right does he have to ask me to believe him?
"Please just go, I'll be getting married to someone else in two months and I'm happy, let's just keep our relationship professional. We have nothing to talk about and there's no reason why you should be standing in front of my house."
I opened the door and tried closing it when I got in but he held it open with his elbow.
"You're getting married?" He asked, I didn't know if it was sympathy or mockery but the question angered me.
"Yes and you better stay away from me, I don't know what you're hoping to achieve with this promotion thing. Please leave."
He stepped back and raised his hand in surrender "okay, take care. Tell the little princess I said bye, I'll see you tomorrow."
I shut the door and rested my back against it.
Derek Winter means nothing.
~•~
After Arriving work the next day, I realized my office had been moved close to his, it raised few eyebrows as eyes followed me around but I didn't care, I wanted to just work and get my pay.
He didn't say much when we talked and I knew if he continued like this working with him would be easier than I expected.
"Miss Barrington." I heard him call my name from my office telephone.
"Can I see you in my office right now?" He asked, his voice cold, professional.
"Yes sir." I replied and placed the caller down.
I stood up and smoothed my skirt, I had submitted his schedule for the week earlier, I prayed there wasn't an issue there.
"I'm here Sir." I said sliding his door open.
He looked up at me and buried his face in the schedule he was looking, I filled air in my lungs and exhaled.
"Cancel the meeting with the Brown's enterprise, I don't have anything more to say to them." He said passing the chart to me.
I reached for it and stood there waiting for further instructions.
"That'll be all." He said.
I nodded and turned to leave.
"Wait." I heard him say, I turned and jumped back in fright, my back resting on the glass door, he was standing in front of me, too close that it made me uncomfortable.
"Sir–"
"Are you really getting married in two months? Are you happy? Is that what you really want?" He asked moving closer to me.
I moved back and pressed myself tighter against the door "Yes, Adonis and I will be married in June and I'm sure about my decision."
"Okay." He said shifting back and adjusting his tie.
What was wrong with him? And why was I suddenly sweaty? And my heart? I feared he would hear it slamming loudly against my chest.
"That little girl at your house, who's she? Your child? Did you–"
"Nothing happened when I left and I really don't enjoy discussing my personal life in the office, Sir."
"Okay, you're sure this your decision will make you happy, right?"
"Definitely." I replied not looking at him.
"Come back to me Emilia." He said looking at me, his eyes full of what I lacked words for.
The room became hot.
"Derek." I managed to say, completely caught off guard by his words.
"I know you're getting married, but give me a chance to try."
"I-I don't understand."
"I want you back Emilia, and I think you should also give me a fair chance."
I scoffed.
"A fair chance? You already had that before, how many chances do you want? 10? 15? I'm sorry, I can't give you that."
"A month."
"For what?"
"I just want you to be my Assistant for a month and if nothing happens in that time, I'll leave you alone forever."
"What?"
"That's all Emilia, you'll leave Adonis or whatever his name is and come back to me, I just need a month." He said smiling.
It irked me.
What does he think he is? After messing up my life he thinks he can just walk back in Like nothing happened? Well, I'll love to see him try.
"Fine, you'll leave me alone forever."
"Definitely. Your salary has been tripled too." He said and moved to his seat.
"What? You want to buy me over with money?" I asked shaking my head.
"Of course not sweetheart, the package comes with your new role. If you continue like this, you might fall earlier than you expect."
He was definitely trying to piss me off.
"I'll take my leave now Sir." I was angry at myself, why did I agree to stay in here for this long when I already knew he had nothing good to say?
"Fine, you can go."
"Thank you Sir."
"I'll always get what's mine Emilia, remember that."
I felt the blood drain from my face.
