--- Chapter Eight: The Breaking Point Seraphina didn’t need the Moon to rise to feel its pull. She felt it in the marrow of her bones, the way her breath deepened, the way the air clung to her skin. Everything inside her had shifted since the vision. Her body was no longer just hers — it was humming, vibrating with the Luna Core that had awakened deep within. She didn’t yet know how to wield it. But the Alphas did. They felt her change like a storm on the horizon. And it drove them mad. --- The library was dim, warmed only by firelight and moonbeams that filtered through the arched windows. She had come for quiet, for distance. But silence didn’t last long in Duskfall anymore. The first to arrive was Almond. His presence flowed in softly, quietly — like always — but his eyes held a storm. She looked up from the book in her lap and immediately felt the weight of it. “You’re burning,” he said gently, crossing the room. Seraphina arched a brow. “Excuse me?” He sat on the armrest of her chair. “Your aura. It’s brighter. Louder. Your soul has expanded. I can feel it.” She exhaled. “You’re not wrong.” “I know.” He reached out and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “You’re not the same girl who stood by the Moon Tree a week ago.” Her chest tightened. “I’m still me.” “You’re more.” His fingers brushed her cheekbone. “And the more you become, the harder it is... not to fall in deeper.” Their eyes locked. His gaze dropped to her lips. And just before he could lean in— The door slammed open. --- Richard stormed in, boots heavy, energy like wildfire. “I knew it,” he snapped. “You’re always here first.” Almond stood slowly. Calmly. “I didn’t claim her,” he said. “I just saw her. Can you say the same?” Richard's jaw clenched. “Don’t test me.” “Then stop acting like a child.” Seraphina rose between them, heart pounding. “Stop it,” she said firmly. “This isn’t—” But Alfred was already entering from the shadows, his voice ice-cold. “Let her speak, for once.” Three pairs of eyes fell on her. Seraphina’s spine straightened. “I didn’t call you.” “No,” Alfred said, circling the room like a predator. “But we felt you.” “That’s not my fault.” “No,” he agreed, “it’s your gift. But gifts draw war.” Richard stepped forward, fuming. “This isn’t war.” Alfred looked at him. “Then what is it, Firebrand? Possession? Obsession?” “I love her,” Richard snapped. Silence. Almond lowered his eyes, hurt flickering across his face. Alfred didn’t flinch. “Love without control is madness.” Richard growled. “Coming from you, that's rich.” “I control because I care. Because I know what happens when the Moon chooses wrong.” “You mean when she doesn’t choose you?” Richard shot back. “Stop it!” Seraphina’s voice rang through the room. They stilled. She turned away, breathing hard, hands shaking. “I’m not a bone for you to fight over. I’m not here for you to claim.” Richard stepped closer. His voice softened. “We don’t mean to hurt you. But when you’re near, it’s like... I can’t breathe unless I’m touching you.” He raised his hand to her jaw. Her eyes fluttered shut for half a second. Then Almond spoke. “She needs more than heat.” Richard froze. Almond walked forward, calm but firm. “She needs grounding. A bond that won’t burn out.” “You’re both wrong,” Alfred said from behind. “She doesn’t need to be held. She needs someone who can stand beside her without collapsing under her power.” He stepped forward. His hand brushed her back — directly over the mark. Seraphina gasped. The mark glowed. Each Alpha felt it. Their instincts screamed. Their wolves roared. --- Then all hell broke loose. Richard grabbed Alfred by the collar. “You don’t touch her.” Alfred struck first. His fist connected with Richard’s jaw, sending him reeling. Almond moved instantly — not to fight, but to block Seraphina. But Seraphina wasn’t afraid. She was angry. “ENOUGH!” The room trembled. The windows flickered. All three Alphas froze. Her eyes were glowing now. Fully. A soft silver light, like moonlight bleeding from her soul. “You are tearing each other apart,” she whispered. “And I’m standing here... choosing none of you.” They stared. “Because none of you are ready,” she added. “Not for me. Not for what’s coming.” --- She turned and walked out, her power trailing behind her like a veil. None of them followed. Not yet. But in the silence that followed her absence, all three knew the truth. They hadn’t just lost control. They had lost ground. And the war for Seraphina’s heart had truly begun. ---
