The Alpha’s Defiance

1064 Words
Kael’s POV The council stood before me, their expressions carved from centuries of authority and control. My hand remained at the small of Liora’s back, firm and possessive. I could feel the subtle rise and fall of her breathing against me, uneven despite the way she held her chin high, trying to appear unshaken. She had heard them, every word and still, she stood. The eldest council member stepped forward again, his gaze cutting through the air like a blade. “You do not understand what you are holding, Kael.” My jaw tightened. “I understand perfectly.” “No, you don’t. That girl is not a prize, she is a threat. A living weapon” another council member snapped. Liora shifted slightly beside me, just enough for me to feel it. The eldest council member's voice dropped, quieter now, but far more dangerous. “That bloodline was nearly wiped out for a reason.” I let out a slow breath, my gaze flicking briefly to Liora then back to the council. “And yet, she stands here” I said evenly. “Which is exactly why she must die.” The words landed like a blow and Liora’s body went still. Her silence was louder than any scream. “No,” I said simply and the room froze. One of the Alphas stepped forward sharply. “You would defy the council for a girl?” “For my prisoner,” I corrected coldly. A dangerous edge crept into my voice. “You forget your place, Kael.” A faint smile touched my lips. “I never forget my place.” My wolf stirred beneath my skin, slow and deliberate. “And my place, is above every wolf in this territory” I continued. The air shifted and tension crackled like lightning before a storm. For a moment, I thought one of them might challenge me. I almost welcomed it, but then the eldest council member spoke again. “You are blinded.” “No, I am in control” I said calmly. Their eyes narrowed, they didn’t believe me. Of course they didn’t, they had seen the way my wolf reacted, the way the room shifted when her blood touched the ground. One of them let out a low, humorless laugh. “Control? You could barely stand when her blood surfaced” he repeated. My grip on Liora tightened slightly and her breath caught. “And yet, I am standing” I said slowly. The elder shook his head. “You are already compromised.” Silence followed. “That’s not true" I challenged. “Prove it then that you are not affected by her” the elder said. The room held its breath and Liora’s body tensed beneath my hand. She knew something was coming and her pulse began to race again. I could feel it through the thin barrier of her skin, through the air, through the pull that refused to loosen its grip on me. Slowly, I turned my head toward her and her eyes lifted to meet mine. If they needed proof, I would give it to them. My hand slid from her back to her waist, pulling her firmly against me. She gasped softly, her hands instinctively bracing against my chest. “Alpha—” she started, her voice low, uncertain. I didn’t let her finish. I tilted her chin up, forcing her gaze to lock with mine. “Be still,” I commanded. Her lips parted slightly, her breath brushed against my skin, inviting in ways that irritated me. For a brief moment, I hesitated. My wolf surged violently at that hesitation but I brushed it off. I leaned down and kissed her, not gently or carefully, but deliberately. My mouth captured hers, firm and demanding, leaving no room for uncertainty. She stiffened immediately. Her fingers pressed harder against my chest. For a second, she resisted and then she went still. Her lips parted under mine, not in surrender, but in shock. The faint taste of her hit me instantly and my wolf reacted violently. A low growl built in my chest, barely contained. I deepened the kiss just slightly, not enough to lose control, but enough to make a point. Her breath hitched as her body trembled and it fed something dangerous inside me then I bit her lip, enough for the metallic taste of her blood to spread across my tongue. The effect was immediate and my wolf roared, the taste stronger than before. It flooded my senses, sharp and intoxicating, pulling at something primal inside me that I had not felt in years. My grip tightened instinctively and for a fraction of a second, I almost lost it. Her scent surrounded me, her warmth pressed against me, threatening to break me. I pulled back immediately, my chest rose and fell once but my expression remained unchanged. I turned back to the council slowly. “She does not affect me,” I said, my voice steady. Silence filled the room and the elders studied me carefully, searching for weakness. Finally, the eldest council member exhaled slowly. “For now, you will keep her” he said. The words carried weight. “But understand this, Alpha Kael, we will return and when we do…” His eyes flicked briefly to Liora then back to me. “If you have not dealt with her, we will” He finished, his voice dropped. I said nothing because there was nothing to say. They turned without another word then one by one, the council began to leave the throne hall. Their presence left slowly, like a storm pulling back, but not disappearing. The doors closed behind them then silence followed and my gaze shifted back to Liora. She hadn’t moved, her lips slightly parted, her breathing uneven, her eyes filled with something I couldn’t quite name. My wolf stirred again, quiet this time, but watching. Interested. I stepped closer. Slowly. Deliberately. My voice dropped, low enough for only her to hear. “They will come back for you, and when they do, we will see just how dangerous you truly are" I leaned in slightly, close enough to feel her breath again. My fingers brushed lightly against her jaw, enough to make her inhale sharply. Her pulse jumped beneath my hand and this time, I didn’t pull away immediately.
