IYRA'S POV It had all started with an unbearable warmth coursing through my veins, a fire threatening to consume me from the inside out. I could feel my bones shifting, the pain overwhelming my senses. I doubled over, gasping as the change took hold. A guttural growl mixed with screams escaped my lips as my spine arched, muscles contorting as fur sprouted across my skin. I could hear growls and roars echoing far and near, howling to the moon. My vision blurred, colors and shapes swirling together. But beneath the ache, I could feel a deeper, strange power stirring within me. My heartbeat thundered in my ears, the rapid pulsing almost deafening. Nails elongated into sharp claws, digging into the soft earth beneath me as I fought to maintain control. I could sense the very plants and trees around me, their energies flowing through me like an extension of my own being. The earthy scent of the soil, the sweet fragrance of wildflowers and the musky scent of animals - it all overwhelmed me, flooding my nostrils and triggering a growl. The colors and shapes began to take shape and I could suddenly perceive the world around me in vivid detail. The sounds of the forest - the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, the scurrying of little creatures. They all seem amplified, assaulting my senses. And then, in an instant, the shifting ceased, a sudden calm washed over me as the frantic pounding of my heart slowed leaving me panting on my hands and knees or rather, my paws. I lifted my head, taking the world through new eyes. Then I heard a voice, melodic and vibrant emanating from somewhere deep within my core. “Hi Iyra.” The strange voice washed over me, soothing and familiar yet alien. I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, a wave of dizziness enveloped me. The forest around me began to sway and blur, and suddenly everything went dark as I felt myself falling. *********************************** Eliza had surprisingly visited our home in time to make it to the ball. She looked absolutely gorgeous, adorning a stunning crimson gown that flowed gracefully around her. The bodice hugged her frame perfectly while the skirt billowed out in soft, sweeping layers. The subtle embellishments when caught in the light glimmered like tiny stars. She had come in like a fairy godmother, demanding who needed her assistance. Not much was said as she quickly sat me in front of a mirror and began her magic. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine and powder as she worked with skilled, nimble fingers, expertly applying highlighter that made my cheekbones glow, and sweeping a deep, earthly eyeshadow across my lids that seemed to draw warmth from my hazel eyes. My parents stayed at the door, watching her perform her magic and assisting her in any way they could. I couldn't help but feel like a stray pup, lost and out of place. Few days ago, my main plan was catching a fox and learning how to blend into a tree and now, here I was preparing for a ball that will make me in the sight of the whole pack. I felt a little disturbed to be in the same place and celebrating with members of the family that got us banished but I kept it to myself. I had already promised her I would wear it. As she moved on to my hair she kept on fussing as my hair simply refused to be tamed into a sleek updo. No matter how she pulled, straightened and twisted the stubborn strands, they always seemed to spring back to life, cascading around my face in a riot of soft waves and curls. She finally threw up her hands in exasperation, admitting defeat. “It's no use!” She exclaimed. “It just has a mind of it's own.” She said staring at my hair as if it were a wild creature. I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous the situation was. It was something I later had to accept. While others were getting their hair braided, I was busy chasing frogs in the forest. “Don't worry, it's okay.” I said trying to reassure her. “I like it this way. It's just a little… unruly.” She smiled, shaking her head. “Unruly is one way to put it.” She said, shaking her head. “But I suppose that's the beauty of it and it really suits you. You're a bit of a wild thing, aren't you?” I grinned, giving her a conspiratorial wink. With a newfound sense of purpose, she began packing and securing my hair in a more intentional manner. Instead of trying to tame it, she worked with the natural fall and movement of the strands. Sections were carefully pinned back while the rest tumbled freely around my shoulders in a soft wave framing my face in a wild yet elegant manner. Finally it was time to slip into the gown. As the shimmering fabric enveloped me,I was struck by how seamlessly it seemed to fit as if specifically designed with me in mind. The rich green hue complimented my skin beautifully. I made my way to the full length mirror as Eliza followed me making final touches. A gasp escaped my lips as I gazed at my reflection. I hardly recognized the person staring back at me. The gown hugged my figure flawlessly, the intricate embroidery catching the light, seeming to glow. A soft blush graced my cheekbones as my eyes were accentuated with a subtle smoky effect making them appear larger and vibrant while my lips were painted in a deep, rich shade of red. She had applied an oil that literally made my skin shine. My curls sat framing my face as I stepped into the heels my mum had picked out me. I wasn't really happy about this particular aspect but had to suck it up. “We look so gorgeous!” My wolf, Willow exclaimed as I twirled, trying different poses. She had been quiet since the shift, only speaking when necessary. I don't really remember passing out as my parents had explained but, I do remember being in the same room with a gray colored wolf, its eyes, a piercing shade of green with a golden rim around the iris. It was as if our souls had reconnected and become one. “You're stunning!!” My mum squealed, gathering me in her arms while my dad stood behind her patting her back. I knew if I didn't stop it here, we'd probably end up in a cry fest so I gave them both a big hug as Eliza and I made our way out the door.
