Chapter 7: The Hidden Truths

1366 Words
Olivia’s POV I couldn’t shake the feeling that everything had changed. Tristan’s words haunted me even as I lay in bed, trying to force myself to sleep. The connection he spoke of—the pull—was like a constant hum in the back of my mind. I didn’t know what it meant, but it felt as if it was something ancient, something deeper than anything I’d ever experienced. I rolled over, staring at the ceiling. My phone lit up with a message, breaking the silence of the room. It was from Sarah. I hesitated before opening it. Sarah: You okay? I know things got weird earlier. Want to talk? I typed a response quickly, wanting to brush everything off, but knowing I needed to talk to someone. Olivia: Yeah, just... processing a lot. Can we meet tomorrow? Sarah: Of course. I’ll be at the café at noon. You in? I stared at my phone for a moment before sending my reply. Olivia: Yeah, I’ll be there. I needed answers, and Sarah was the one person who might be able to give them to me. Maybe, just maybe, she’d heard something about the strange happenings around town. Something about Tristan, or the world he claimed to be part of. The next day came quicker than I expected. I found myself walking to the café, feeling the weight of the conversation that was coming. The sun was shining brightly, but it didn’t seem to warm me. I was still cold with uncertainty. When I entered the café, Sarah waved me over, her usual cheerfulness softened by the concerned look in her eyes. “Hey, Liv,” she said as I sat down. “I’m glad you made it.” I forced a smile. “Thanks for meeting me. I... I’m not sure what’s going on, Sarah. Tristan—he said things to me. Things I don’t understand.” She leaned forward, her brow furrowing. “What kind of things?” I hesitated, trying to find the right words. “He said I’m his mate. That we share some kind of connection. And he said something about... a world I don’t know about. A dangerous one. A world of werewolves.” I couldn’t help the laughter that escaped from me, though it was tinged with disbelief. “Werewolves? This sounds insane, right?” Sarah’s face went serious, and for a moment, I could have sworn she was looking at me with pity. “Olivia,” she said quietly, “you’re not crazy.” I blinked, trying to process what she was saying. “What?” “I know it’s hard to believe. But Tristan is part of something bigger. Something... older. And it’s not just him. There are others like him, people with these abilities. These... wolves.” I stared at her, unsure if I heard her right. “How do you know all of this?” Sarah glanced around the café, as if making sure no one could overhear. “Because I’ve seen it. I’ve seen the changes. And I know things about Tristan’s pack. They’re not like regular people. They have... powers. And there’s this whole society they’re part of. They live by a different set of rules.” I blinked again, trying to wrap my head around what she was saying. “Are you saying I’m supposed to believe in all this... supernatural stuff?” She nodded slowly. “I know it sounds impossible. But it’s real, Olivia. I promise you.” A chill ran down my spine, and I shivered despite the warmth of the café. “And you’re okay with this? With everything Tristan said?” Sarah sighed. “It’s not about being okay with it. It’s about understanding that they’re not the enemy. They’re a part of something much bigger than all of us. And if you’re his mate, that makes you a part of it, too.” “His mate…” I repeated the words softly, the meaning behind them still too overwhelming for me to comprehend. “But I don’t know him like that. I don’t even know what I feel about him.” “I know,” Sarah said, her voice gentle. “But that’s the thing. When you meet your mate, it’s like everything clicks into place. It might not be immediate, but it’s a connection you can’t ignore. I’m guessing you’ve already started to feel it.” I had. I didn’t want to admit it, but it was there. Every time Tristan’s eyes locked with mine, something in my chest fluttered, an undeniable pull toward him that I couldn’t explain. “But why me?” I asked, my voice breaking. “Why now?” “That’s the part I don’t know,” Sarah said, her expression thoughtful. “But it’s clear something’s happening. And whatever it is, it’s not going to leave you alone. You’ll have to make a choice soon.” The weight of her words settled heavily in my chest. A choice? What kind of choice was I supposed to make? To accept this strange new world? To accept Tristan? --- Tristan’s POV I was restless. Every hour that passed without seeing Olivia made me more anxious. My wolf was unsettled, pacing in the back of my mind, demanding I go to her, explain things, make her understand. But I couldn’t. I knew better than to push her too hard. The human world was nothing like ours. Olivia wasn’t ready for this. I could feel it in every fiber of my being. But I couldn’t ignore her. Not when I knew she was my mate. I stood by the window in the pack house, staring out at the horizon, waiting for the moment I could see her again. “You’re torturing yourself,” Elias said from behind me, his tone a mixture of exasperation and amusement. I didn’t turn around. “I need to see her, Elias. She doesn’t understand, but she’s already part of this world whether she wants to be or not.” He sighed, walking up beside me. “You know how dangerous this is, right? Not just for her, but for you, too. If the rogues find out about her…” “I know,” I interrupted, my voice low. “But I can’t just stay away. I won’t. She’s mine, and I’m not going to let anyone take her from me.” Elias studied me for a moment, then nodded. “Just be careful. The rogues are getting bolder, and if they think she’s the key to weakening us—” “I’ll protect her,” I cut him off. “I’ll protect her no matter what.” Elias nodded again, his expression darkening. “I hope you can. But remember, she’s not just a human anymore. She’s your mate. And that makes her a target.” --- Olivia’s POV I couldn’t sleep that night. My mind wouldn’t stop racing. Werewolves? Mates? Tristan? I didn’t know what to believe, but everything I had felt around him, all the strange pulls and emotions, suddenly made sense. I needed answers. And I wasn’t going to wait any longer to get them. I thought of Tristan, of the strange way he had looked at me earlier, like he knew something I didn’t. Something important. I stood up, pacing the room, trying to sort through my emotions. I wasn’t ready for any of this. I didn’t know what it meant to be someone’s mate. But whatever this was, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Tomorrow, I would face him. But I wasn’t going to do it because I was ready. I was going to do it because I had to know the truth. --- Tristan’s POV I stood outside her apartment, heart hammering in my chest. This was it. No more waiting. No more secrets. Olivia needed to know everything. I raised my hand to knock, but before my knuckles could touch the door, it swung open. She was standing there, her eyes searching mine. “I’m not ready for all of this,” she said, her voice strained. “But I need to know. Everything.” And just like that, everything began to shift.
