Chapter 5: An Unexpected Meeting

1276 Words
Isa had spent the entire week settling into her new routine at the clinic, adjusting to the rhythm of her work and the quiet moments when she’d get lost in her thoughts. But nothing in her carefully orchestrated life could prepare her for the day that Dominic would accidentally cross her path again—this time, with her son in tow. It was a Saturday morning, one of the rare days she had off to spend with Chase. The sun had already risen, and the warmth of the day felt like a promise—peaceful, uninterrupted. Isa and Chase were at their favorite café, a little hidden spot in the heart of the city, where they had their usual breakfast and played games together while sipping on chocolate milk. Chase had been particularly excited today. He had drawn a picture of a superhero—a mix between a dinosaur and a rocket ship—he was convinced it was the best creation ever. Isa had smiled, tucking his little drawing into her bag, feeling a wave of pride for her little artist. "Mom, I’m gonna be a superhero one day. You’ll see," Chase said, his voice full of uncontainable confidence as he scribbled a few more colors on his drawing. Isa laughed softly, her heart light. "Of course, baby. You’ll be the best superhero in the world."Just as she took another sip of her coffee, the door to the café swung open. Isa didn’t look up immediately; she was so used to the hustle of people coming and going. But then, she heard the voice. That familiar voice. The one that once filled every corner of her heart with warmth. "Excuse me, is this seat taken?" The voice was calm but unmistakable. Her body went still, and her heart skipped. It was Dominic. He was standing just a few feet away, looking as effortlessly handsome as she remembered. But there was something different in his eyes—something softer. She quickly looked away, trying to keep her composure. She could already feel the knot in her stomach tightening. It wasn’t the first time she had seen him since their conversation, but this time it was different. This time, they were in the same space, and her son was right there, oblivious to the past that had nearly broken his mother. "No, it’s not taken," she replied stiffly, avoiding his gaze as she placed her coffee cup back on the table. Dominic didn’t move at first, his eyes flicking to Chase who was now completely engrossed in his drawing. Isa felt the air shift between them. He was standing there, uncertain, like he wasn’t sure if he was welcome. And truth be told, he wasn’t. Not yet. But what could she do? She had always prided herself on being polite and respectful, no matter the situation. "Thanks," Dominic finally said, easing into the seat across from her. It wasn’t until he sat down that his gaze finally settled on Chase. The young boy had barely looked up from his picture. His little hands were busy coloring furiously, his concentration intense. But then, something shifted. As if he felt the weight of someone else’s eyes on him, Chase slowly lifted his head. His big brown eyes locked onto Dominic’s, and for a brief moment, the entire world seemed to stop. Isa’s breath caught in her throat as she watched the exchange. Chase didn’t look away. In fact, he did something Isa never expected. He smiled. A big, wide grin that lit up his face, making him look even more like the confident little superhero he claimed he was going to be. Dominic’s mouth hung slightly open for a moment, as if surprised by the warmth in the child’s smile. "Hi," Chase said, his voice a mix of innocence and curiosity. "Are you a superhero too?" Isa nearly choked on her sip of coffee. She hadn’t expected Chase to speak to him. But there was something about Dominic’s presence that had drawn him in. Something in the way Dominic’s eyes softened when he looked at Chase. Dominic blinked, caught off guard by the question. He didn’t answer immediately, but instead looked at Isa, his gaze questioning. "I… I guess I’m kind of like one," he said finally, his tone warm. "In my own way. But I’m still learning." Chase seemed to think this over for a moment, his little brow furrowing as he processed the response. "You’re like a football player, right?" he asked with a genuine curiosity that only a child could muster. Dominic’s lips curved into a smile. "Yeah, I am. But you know, being a superhero isn’t just about playing football. It’s about helping people. Making them feel better, giving them hope. Just like you want to do, right?" Chase nodded enthusiastically, clearly enchanted by the idea. "I’m going to help everyone! I’m gonna be the best superhero ever!"Isa couldn’t help but smile at her son’s innocence. She felt a surge of affection for him, and then a strange wave of protectiveness for Dominic. It was weird. There was a part of her that didn’t want to let Dominic back into her life—but watching him interact with Chase, something within her softened. She could see it in the way he was speaking to him, in the way he was genuinely engaged, not like the man who had once broken her heart. There was a small pause as the weight of the moment hung in the air. Isa wasn’t sure if she should say something, if she should stop Dominic from talking to her son. But she didn’t feel the need to. Chase had already decided for her that Dominic wasn’t a threat. And maybe, just maybe, this was what she needed to see—a different side of him. Dominic shifted in his seat, his gaze turning to Isa, as though he were trying to gauge her reaction. "You’ve done a great job with him," he said softly. "He’s an amazing kid." her voice steady despite the quiet rush of emotions stirring in her chest. "He’s everything to me." There was no awkwardness now, just the sound of Chase laughing as he continued with his superhero drawing, adding another rocket ship to the already colorful mess. It was as if everything had fallen into place, as if this unexpected moment had created a small bridge, something that hadn’t existed before. Not between Isa and Dominic, but between the lives they once shared and the lives they were now living. For a brief moment, Isa let herself relax. She wasn’t thinking about the past, or about the mistakes. She was just here—present, watching her son and Dominic engage in something simple yet meaningful. "Well," Dominic said, standing up, "I should let you two get back to your day." He paused, looking at Chase once more, then back at Isa. "It was good to see you again." Isa looked at him, taking in his words. She wasn’t ready to forgive him, but she could see the sincerity in his eyes. Maybe that was enough for now. "Goodbye, Dominic," she said, her voice soft but firm. As he walked away, something shifted in her heart. It wasn’t forgiveness, not yet. But it was a new beginning—a quiet understanding that maybe the past didn’t have to define the future. Maybe, just maybe, she and Dominic could coexist in this new world, without the weight of history dragging them down.Chase, oblivious to the complexity of the moment, looked up at her with a big grin. "I like him, mama. He’s nice." To be continued...... .
