Chapter 8: Crossroads

389 Words
The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Isa's modest apartment, casting a gentle glow over the living room. Chase sat cross-legged on the floor, engrossed in his coloring book, his brow furrowed in concentration. Isa sipped her coffee, the warmth grounding her amidst the whirlwind of recent events. Dominic's unexpected reappearance had stirred emotions she'd long kept buried. Yet, she reminded herself, she wasn't the same woman he had left behind. She had built a life—a stable, loving environment for Chase and a fulfilling career. Her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. A message from Dominic: "Would love to see Chase again, if you're okay with it." Isa stared at the screen, conflicted. Chase deserved to know his father, but she needed to ensure Dominic's intentions were genuine. She typed a response: "Let's meet at the park this afternoon. 3 PM." The park was alive with the sounds of children playing and birds chirping. Isa watched as Chase ran ahead, his laughter echoing. Dominic stood by the swings, his eyes lighting up as he spotted them."Hey, Chase!" Dominic called out, kneeling to greet his son. Chase hesitated, looking up at Isa. She nodded, offering a reassuring smile. Slowly, Chase approached Dominic, curiosity evident in his eyes. "Hi," he said softly. Dominic's face broke into a smile. "Hi, buddy. Want to try the swings?" Chase nodded, and soon, laughter filled the air as Dominic pushed him higher and higher. Isa sat on a nearby bench, observing the scene. The sight of them together tugged at her heart, but she remained cautious. After a while, Dominic joined her. "Thank you for this," he said, his voice sincere. Isa nodded. "Chase deserves to know you. But this doesn't change the past." "I know," Dominic replied. "I just want to be part of his life, if you'll let me." Isa looked at him, searching his eyes for truth. "Actions speak louder than words, Dominic. Prove it." As the sun began to set, casting golden hues across the park, Isa gathered Chase in her arms. "Did you have fun today?" she asked. Chase nodded enthusiastically. "Can we see him again?" Isa smiled, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "We'll see, sweetheart. We'll see." --- Authors note Isa is still skeptical 🤨 can Dom really win her over?
