Chapter seven

Alpha King Ethan’s POV I opened my mindlink with Fynn but I was blocked. I tried to reach him through the phone but couldn't. I tried to reach the other guards stationed at the hospital through the mindlink and phone but could not also get to them. "What the hell happened?" Killer growled in my mind. "Damn it!" I snarled and rushed out of the castle, headed to the pack hospital. I used the forest lane and ran in my wolf form. I arrived at the hospital in ten minutes. I was surprised to find the guards stationed in their usual spots. Nothing looked weird. The hospital wasn't rowdy. If the Mayor's men abducted Valerie, the situation in the hospital shouldn't be calm. The guards bowed their heads to me and so did the pack members around, chanting "Your Majesty." "This way, Your Majesty." One of the nurses led me into Valerie's ward. Fynn stood up immediately. He was surprised. He wasn't expecting to see me so soon. "You're here already?" He asked and I ignored him. My focus was on Valerie. "She hasn't woken up, the doctors said it's up to her to do so." Fynn said. "No one came here?" I asked him. "Yes. Why do you ask? Did you send anyone here?" "No." "Where's your phone?" I asked him and he took it out of his pants pocket, "Why couldn't I reach you earlier both through the phone and mindlink?" I asked further. "My phone went off and I didn't come with my charger. You couldn't link me because I blocked my mind after Sarah quarrelled with me." "I thought you said she doesn't mind your wild habits." I sneered at him and he gave me the look of I-thought-so-too. “Open your link. It's dangerous to leave it locked." I added. "Yes, Your Majesty." I stood contemplating why the Mayor told me he already took Valerie when he didn't. "What game is he playing?" I mumbled. "Who?" Fynn asked. I waved him off, "Don't bother. From now on, the doctors will attend to Valerie in the castle." "What? Why?" Fynn asked, surprised. "Because I'm taking her with me." "Your Majesty..." "I want to watch her closely. She's the ticket to finding my wife's killer. I can't make any mistakes." "Do you really believe all she's been saying? Remember how she got here. We thought she was your wife's killer. She's all over the CCTV cam records and her fingerprints were found on your wife's body and clothes. What if you're already making a mistake by believing her?" I reasoned Fynn's words and the Mayor's words ran into my mind, "...I bet she's been feeding you with lies." "Look, I don't know, okay. That's why I need her to wake up." I said simply. Valerie was a mystery. She was acting plain and normal but I was beginning to sense she was running from something or someone. And I needed to know who it was or what it was because I had a strong feeling it had something to do with my dead mate. Fynn made my intentions for Valerie clear to the pack doctors and they quickly arranged for her transfer to the castle. I stayed beside her in the ambulance with two doctors, while Fynn and my guards rode in the cars in front of the ambulance. My gaze didn't break from Valerie. She looked pale and dry. Her lips were chapped. The doctors told me she would only wake up if she wanted to. Suddenly, there was a crash and the ambulance went off the cliff and somersaulted into the forest. I was quick to grab Valerie before the somersault. I covered her with my body and took all the effect of the van rolling over seven times. The doctors and driver died instantly. But Valerie was safe in my arms. I could hear gunshots in the up land. The attackers were humans and I knew no human would dare to attack us except the Mayor. Damn it. This was his game all along. I guess the security at the hospital was too tight for him to penetrate. He wanted me to take Valerie out of the hospital. That way, it was easier to take her and he would be killing two birds with one stone. Killing me and taking Valerie away. Did he really think a mere accident would kill an Alpha King? I didn't blame him for thinking so. He was a human after all. I forced my way out of the squashed van with Valerie in my arms. Just when I got out, I was surrounded by at least a hundred human soldiers, who were pointing their guns at me. I knew those guns contained a higher grade of poisoned silver bullets that killed werewolves at one shot. "It's over, Alpha king. Give us the girl and get down on your knees." The one who seems to be the captain ordered. I chuckled. Who said the game was over? My heart burned, my claws extended from my fingers. My face transformed into that of Killer, my wolf, and the human soldiers were startled. They took steps back as they watched me in horror. I didn't transform into my wolf completely because I held back. I didn't have anyone to put Valerie on my back if I transformed. I howled and in the next second, hundreds of my border patrol guards trooped out of the forest in their wolf forms. They surrounded the human soldiers, snarling angrily at them. "What are you waiting for?" I asked in the mindlink, "Kill all of them." I ordered and they all charged at the human soldiers. As the snarls of werewolves and screams of humans filled the air, I ran off, killing off the humans who tried to follow me. And brought Valerie to safety in the castle.
