Chains and Love

700 Words
The dungeon was colder than Seraphine remembered. The air reeked of damp stone and rusting iron, yet something deeper pulled her forward. With Alaric gone, her feet betrayed her heart carrying her where she was forbidden to go. The night was heavy with silence as Seraphine slipped through the torchlit halls. Each step echoed faintly, her heart pounding against her ribs. She should not have been here if Alaric ever discovered her wandering the dungeons, her carefully kept facade would crumble. Yet some unseen pull dragged her forward, stronger than fear. The guards at the dungeon entrance stirred at her approach, one opening his mouth to challenge her. And then it happened. A ripple of unseen power spread outward, soft as a sigh. The guards’ eyes glazed. One by one, they slumped against the walls, sinking into deep, dreamless sleep. Seraphine gasped, clutching her chest. What did I just do…? But there was no time to linger. The air inside the dungeon was colder, thicker, as though saturated with grief. And there he was — Lucian — shackled in chains carved with ancient runes, his figure slouched yet radiating a dangerous strength. His head lifted the instant she entered, eyes glowing like embers in the dark. “Seraphine…” he breathed, her name a whisper that shook the walls. The ground trembled faintly. Dust sifted from the ceiling. The chains tightened on him with a hiss of runes flaring, as though the dungeon itself feared what he could become in her presence. Her steps faltered. “Why… why did you say my name before my husband?” Her voice quivered, though she forced steel into it. “Do you realize the danger? What are you? What am I? And why… why are we bound like this?” Lucian’s laugh was low, bitter. “You think I know? The curse that binds me to these chains hides its own secrets. All I know is this when I speak your name, the world listens.” His gaze locked onto her. “And when you enter this room, even stone remembers it was once alive.” Seraphine’s breath hitched. The air seemed to thrum between them. Against her better judgment, she moved closer. Lucian jerked back as far as the chains allowed. “Don’t.” His tone was sharp, almost desperate. “You shouldn’t touch me. I will drag you into my damnation.” But her curiosity, her need for answers, burned brighter than her fear. She reached forward and pressed her trembling hand to his chest. The effect was immediate. The sickly pallor faded from his face, scars knitting, old wounds vanishing as though time itself bent for her. His breathing deepened, strength surging back into his body. His very presence grew heavier, commanding. Seraphine, meanwhile, felt herself falter. Her limbs weakened, her vision blurred. The more she healed him, the more life was pulled from her veins. Lucian’s eyes widened. He grabbed her, pulling her against him before she could collapse. “Stop, Seraphine! You’ll kill yourself!” Their bodies pressed together, his warmth searing into her. The chains sparked furiously, runes flaring, but could not fully sever the moment. And then— The skies split apart. Thunder roared, lightning lanced the heavens, the dungeon walls shuddered as if in celebration. Nature itself sang of their bond, wild and undeniable. For one breathless instant, it felt as though the universe itself wanted them united. Lucian stared at her, caught between horror and awe. “This… this power” His voice broke. “It was never mine. It is you.” Seraphine’s eyelids fluttered, her body trembling with exhaustion. Yet she still searched his face, desperate for truth. “Then tell me… what are we?” Lucian’s hand lingered against her back, but his voice hardened, though the fire in his eyes betrayed him. “I do not know.” He forced himself to pull away, chains biting into his flesh with renewed fury. “But hear me, Seraphine come here again, and I swear… I will not let you leave.” His words should have chilled her, but instead, her heart burned hotter, leaving her more shaken than the storm above.
