Chapter 16: What Luck Can’t Hide

371 Words
Elara learned quickly that luck couldn’t erase consequences. The days that followed were smooth in ways that unsettled her. Emails were answered promptly. Work flowed without friction. Even strangers seemed kinder, stepping aside, holding doors, smiling for no reason at all. But Rowan watched her more closely now. “You drift,” he said one evening as they sat across from each other at the café. “Like you’re listening for something I can’t hear.” She forced a smile. “Maybe I’m just tired.” He didn’t argue—but he didn’t look convinced either. Later that night, Elara dreamed of her grandmother again. This time, she stood beside a river frozen at the edges, dark water moving beneath the ice. “You’re letting it speak for you,” her grandmother said. “Elara frowned. “I don’t know how to stop it.” “You don’t,” she replied gently. “You decide when to listen.” Elara woke with her wrist cool for the first time in days. The absence scared her more than the glow ever had. The next afternoon, luck failed her. A glass slipped from her hand at work, shattering loudly against the floor. Conversations stopped. Eyes turned. Someone laughed awkwardly. Her cheeks burned. It was small. Ordinary. But it felt like a warning. That evening, Rowan showed up at her door unannounced, snow dusting his coat. “I don’t want to push,” he said. “But I don’t want to lose you either.” Her chest tightened. The magic stayed silent. “Rowan,” she said softly, “if I tell you something… it might change how you see me.” He stepped closer. “Then let me see you.” For a moment, she almost told him everything—the bracelet, the letters, the impossible timing. The truth pressed against her lips, urgent and frightening. But fear won. “Not yet,” she whispered. Rowan nodded, disappointment flickering across his face before he masked it. “Okay. When you’re ready.” As he left, the warmth returned faintly, uncertain. Luck had stepped back. And for the first time, Elara wondered if honesty—not love—was the real test all along.
