Chapter 2: The Man Who Didn’t Flinch

349 Words
The miracle, Elara decided, must have been a coincidence. Heaters broke. Alarms worked. Luck sometimes pretended to behave before reminding her who it really was. She refused to let one calm morning convince her otherwise. Still, the day felt… off. Not wrong. Just unfamiliar. The bus arrived on time again. Not early. Not late. Right on schedule. She boarded cautiously, half-expecting something to snap, spill, or shatter. Nothing did. At the next stop, the doors hissed open—and that was when she saw him. He stepped onto the bus like he belonged there, tall, dark coat dusted with snow, eyes the quiet green of winter pine. There was nothing extraordinary about him, yet Elara’s chest tightened as if something inside her had recognized him before her mind caught up. The bus jolted forward. She lost her balance. Strong hands caught her without hesitation. “I’ve got you,” he said. No apology. No awkwardness. Just certainty. She pulled back quickly, embarrassed. “Thanks.” He smiled, small and careful, as if he didn’t want to scare her. “You’re welcome.” They stood in silence, the bus humming around them. Elara waited for the usual—an argument, an insult, a spilled drink, something. It never came. Instead, she felt warm. Unreasonably warm. “I’m Rowan,” he said after a moment. “We keep meeting at inconvenient times.” Her brow furrowed. “We do?” He hesitated, like he’d said too much. “I mean cities have patterns.” That made no sense, but before she could question him, the bus slowed. Her stop. “See you around, Elara Winters.” She froze. “How do you know my name?” Rowan’s smile faded, replaced by something softer. Something sad. “I pay attention,” he said. The doors opened. Cold air rushed in—but it didn’t touch her skin. As Elara stepped onto the pavement, she felt it again. A faint ringing. Like distant bells. And behind her, Rowan stayed seated, watching her leave, as if he already knew this meeting had changed everything.
