Chapter 8: When the World Paused

351 Words
Elara noticed it because she’d grown used to things going right. Not spectacularly right. Just… smoothly. Doors opening when they should. Conversations ending kindly. Small mercies that made the holidays feel less sharp around the edges. So when the glass slipped from her hand and didn’t shatter immediately, she felt it. The pause. The cup hovered for a breath too long before hitting the floor. When it finally did, it cracked—not breaking completely, but enough to spill hot chocolate across the counter. Elara froze. There it was. “That’s more like it,” she whispered, heart sinking. Rowan was beside her instantly. “Hey. It’s okay.” She laughed weakly. “It always starts like this.” He cleaned up the spill with careful movements, his jaw tight, eyes focused like he was listening to something she couldn’t hear. The room felt… unsettled. As if the air itself had second thoughts. Later, walking home together, the streetlight ahead of them flickered. Once. Twice. Elara slowed. “Do you see that?” Rowan nodded. “Yeah.” The light went out completely. Darkness settled between them, thick and unfamiliar. Elara’s chest tightened—not in fear, but in recognition. She knew this feeling. The moment right before things went wrong. Rowan reached for her hand. The light snapped back on. Elara exhaled shakily. “That never happens.” He didn’t let go right away. “It does now.” She studied his face. “You knew it would.” Something careful passed through his eyes. “I hoped.” They stood there, hand in hand, neither speaking. For the first time since the magic had begun to stir, it hadn’t rushed to protect her. It had waited. As if asking a question. Elara squeezed his fingers. “Rowan… if I asked you something important—would you tell me the truth?” He met her gaze, torn. “Yes,” he said quietly. The answer felt heavier than it should have. Because the world had paused. And whatever was watching them was waiting to see what she would ask next.
