EP2 – Heat Between Shadows
The villa was oppressively silent, the only sound the crackle of the fire Isabella had lit earlier.
After the glass shattered on the road, she’d been unable to shake the feeling of being
Watched. Adrian’s swift, silent search of the upstairs had done little to ease her tension. He
Returned, his gun still clutched in his hand, his jaw set in a firm line.
‘No one,” he muttered, holstering the weapon. The crease between his brows remained, a
Testament to his lingering unease.
Isabella huddled on the couch, her eyes fixed on the flames dancing in the fireplace. The
Warmth didn’t penetrate the chill that had settled in her bones. “What if they’re already
Inside?” she whispered, the fear she’d been trying to suppress finally breaking through.
Adrian turned to her, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a
Beat. “Then they’d be dead already,” he said, his voice low and even.
The blunt statement sent a shiver down her spine, but it wasn’t fear that dominated her
Reaction. There was something reassuring about his calm certainty, a sense that he was a
Man who knew exactly what he was doing.
As Adrian moved closer, the firelight highighted the sharp planes of his face, casting him in a
Mixture of shadow and gold. Isabella felt the air thicken around them, her pulse quickening in
Response. She twisted her fingers in the fabric of her skirt, a nervous habit she’d thought she’d
Long outgrown.
“You should rest,” Adrian suggested, his voice softer now.
“I don’t think I can sleep, Isabella admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
For a moment, Adrian’s gaze lingered on hers, unreadable. Then, he crouched by the
Fireplace, adjusting a log to coax more warmth from the flames. Sparks erupted, flaring
Brightly before settling into a warm, orange glow.
The warmth reached out to her, and so did Adrian’s presence. Isabella became acutely
Aware of the space between them, the tension that seemed to vibrate with unspoken
Possibilities. Her knee brushed against his as she shifted, the contact sending a jolt through
Her.
Adrian’s gaze snapped to hers, his eyes darkening. ‘You’re shaking,” he observed, his voice
Low.
Isabella forced a laugh, trying to break the tension. “Someone just tried to kill me, and we’re
Hiding in an abandoned villa. This isn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing getaway.”
A ghost of a smile played on Adrian’s lips, softening his features. “You’re braver than you
Think,” he said, his voice tinged with a sincerity that made her heart ache.
The moment hung between them, heavy with unspoken emotions. Isabella felt like she was
Teetering on the edge of something profound, something that could change everything.
And then, in a move that seemed almost involuntary, Adrian leaned in. His breath mingled
With hers, warm and steady, carrying the faint taste of coffee. Isabella’s pulse roared in her
Ears as she waited, frozen, to see if he would close the distance between them.
‘Why do I feel like I’m the one in danger when you look at me like that?” she whispered, her
Voice barely audible over the pounding of her heart.
Adrian’s eyes darkened further. “Because you are,” he replied, his voice low and husky.
For a moment, Isabella thought he might kiss her. She wanted him to, with a desperation that
Shocked her. But Adrion pulled back, standing abruptly to pace to the window. The sudden
Movement was like a dash of cold water, leaving Isabella feeling both disappointed and
Relieved.
“You’ll sleep here, by the fire,” Adrian said, his voice rougher now. “I’ll watch the house.”
Isabella lay back on the couch, the blanket Adrian handed her wrapped tightly around her. As
She closed her eyes, she listened to the rhythm of the flames and Adrian’s footsteps as he
Moved around the villa, watching over her.
But sleep eluded her. As she shifted on the stiff cushions, something slid out of her bag’s side
Pocket. A piece of paper, folded and unfamiliar, caught her attention. Unfolding it, she found
Four words scrawled in thick, black ink: “You’re next.”
The message seemed to sear itself into her brain, the letters burning with a malevolent
Intensity Isabella’s heart raced as she realized this note hadn’t been there before. Someone
Had put it in her bag, and that someone was still out there, watching her.
Her gaze flicked to Adrian, standing guard at the window, his silhouette sharp against the
Dark garden beyond. For a moment, she hesitated, wondering if she should show him the
Note. But something held her back.
As she lay there, the words echoing in her mind, Isabella realized that the danger wasn’t just
Outside. It was right here, in this room, sitting just a breath away.
