Chapter 11: Viral

"Safe travel, everyone," Elijah said, his deep voice low and soothing. "You've earned a good rest." Mia's porcelain skin flushed pink as she met Elijah's gaze, her bright blue eyes sparkling with amusement. Alex's expression darkened, his brows furrowing in a scowl. "Hey, Mia, let me get your stuff," Alex said, swiftly snatching her bags from Elijah's grasp. His movements were fluid, but a hint of possessiveness lingered in his touch. Elijah raised an eyebrow, his gaze flicking at Alex's hands, now wrapped around Mia's luggage. "I've got it, Alex." "No need," Alex replied, loading Mia's belongings into his car with a deliberate slowness, his eyes never leaving Elijah's face. "She's riding with me." Mia's gaze darted between the two, her lips parting in surprise. Elijah's smile faltered. "Hey, Elizabeth?" Riley asked, his voice low and hesitant, as he approached her car. "Mind if I ride with you? Don't feel like getting into Jake's car." I raised an eyebrow, my expressive green eyes questioning. "What's wrong with Jake's car?" Riley shrugged, his broad shoulders rolling in a careless gesture. "Just don't want to be stuck with him, okay, not after everything?" I nodded sympathetically. "Hop in, Riley." As we settled into our vehicles, Elijah's gaze lingered on Mia, now nestled in Alex's car. Alex caught the look and smiled smugly. "Let's get out of here," Alex said, starting the engine. His hand rested on Mia's knee, a gentle possessive touch. "Five days of sleeping together on the dirt ground," he continued, "I think my girl's earned a real bed." Alex's smile hinted at more than just friendship. Elijah's eyes flicked at Alex's hand, his expression fleeting but unmistakable – a spark of jealousy. Mia's cheeks flushed, and she glanced at Elijah before looking away. Riley and I exchanged a knowing glance. Alex's claim was clear, but Elijah's reaction suggested a complicated web of emotions. Elijah cleared his throat. "No problem, happy to help. You folks be careful, okay? You've got my number if you need anything." As Alex put the vehicle in gear, the tension was palpable. Mia shot Elijah a friendly smile, her blonde hair fluttering in the breeze. "Thanks for your help back there." Elijah's expression softened while looking at Mia. "Anytime, Little Luna," he said, his voice low and gentle. Mia's brow furrowed. "Little Luna? What do you mean by that?" Elijah's smile faltered for a moment before he recovered. "Oh, just a nickname. Your eyes...they remind me of full moons. Beautiful and radiant. It just seemed fitting for someone as beautiful as you are." Mia's cheeks flushed, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Thanks, I guess," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Elijah's gaze lingered on hers, his expression intense. "Safe travels, Mia," he said finally, breaking the spell. The convoy pulled out, leaving Crescent Valley's eerie landscape behind. The setting sun cast long shadows across the deserted road. As I navigated the winding road, the darkness outside seemed to press in, like an oppressive shroud. Riley fiddled with the radio, searching for a distraction from the eerie silence. Suddenly, STARSET's haunting vocals filled the air, "Point of No Return" weaving a sonic tapestry of foreboding and tension. "The glow of the fire will light up the night The bridges are burning, the heat's on my face Making the past an unreachable place" Riley's gaze locked onto mine, his eyes gleaming with a mix of fear and resignation. "Feels like they're singing our story." I nodded, my voice barely above a whisper. "We've crossed a line. There's no going back." The lyrics echo our desperate situation: "Pouring the fuel, fanning the flames I know, this is the point of no return. It's uncontrollable" The music swirled around us, a maelstrom of sound that mirrored the chaos within. We'd faced supernatural forces, ancient symbols, and mysterious powers that defied explanation. Riley's voice was laced with desperation. "We can't tell anyone what we saw. Those monsters will rip us apart, Liz. We'll be the main course at their next f*****g feast." I nodded, my heart racing. "I'm not sure, Riley. People have the right to know." Riley's eyes blazed with frustration. "Oh, great, save the world, Liz. Save humanity. Meanwhile, I'll be the one saving my own ass... from being devoured." I understood his fear, but I needed to balance caution with reason. "What's stopping them from finding and hurting you now? Maybe if it's brought to light—" Riley cut me off, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, yeah, because nothing says 'safety' like broadcasting our existence to an ancient, unstoppable evil. 'Hey, monsters! Come and get us!'." I handed him his last joint. "Hey, calm down. smoke this." Riley's gaze locked onto mine, his eyes still blazing. "You think a joint is gonna calm me down? I've seen hell, Liz. I've seen the end of the world." He lit the joint, inhaling deeply, his hands shaking. As the song faded out, the silence felt oppressive. "Let's discuss this with the group," I suggested, "after we've all showered, eaten, and rested." Riley exhaled, his voice laced with resignation. "Fine. But I'm not changing my mind. We will keep this secret, or we die. He said as I pulled up to his apartment complex, and he nodded curtly as he got out. "I'll be fine, Liz. Just keep this quiet for now." I watched Riley disappear into the building before pulling away, the tension between us still palpable. The drive home was a blur, my mind replaying Riley's desperate words. As I pulled into my driveway, the familiar sight of my house offered little comfort. My mind still reeled from the conversation. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time. I trudged inside, dropping my bag on the floor. The silence of my home felt oppressive, a stark contrast to the eerie tension of the drive. My parents were nowhere to be found, their absence a reminder of my solitary night ahead. The empty rooms seemed to echo with the weight of Riley's warnings. I headed straight for the shower, letting the warm water wash away the grime of the day. As I stood under the stream, I couldn't help but feel like I was trying to wash away more than just dirt. The loneliness of my house began to close in around me. I wondered if anyone would be there to protect me if those creatures came for me tonight. Shaking off the thought, I got dressed in my comfy pjs and began making dinner, the routine task offering a fragile sense of normalcy. Ten hours later, I jolted awake, my heart racing like a jackhammer, sweat-drenched sheets clinging to my skin. Morning sunlight streamed through my window, but its warmth was eclipsed by the ominous feeling that our world had imploded. My phone exploded with notifications, a cacophony of buzzing and pinging that made my head spin. "Damn it!" I cursed, rushing to get dressed. I yanked on jeans, tossed on a shirt, and brushed my teeth in record time. Toothpaste foam still dotting my lips, I grabbed my phone and sprinted out the door. 10:45. Jake's meeting was in 15 minutes. As I burst into Jake's, chaos greeted me. Riley and Alex stood face-to-face, faces reddened, veins bulging. "You freaking i***t!" Riley bellowed, fist clenched. "You've put us all in danger!" "I didn't mean for it to go viral!" Alex protested, backing away. Riley's fist connected with Alex's jaw, a sickening crunch that made me wince. "You stupid bastard!" Alex stumbled, blood trickling from his lip. Jake intervened, his voice firm. "Enough! We need a plan, now." Mia's grim expression greeted me, her eyes brimming with tears. "Alex hacked our phones. Our footage is everywhere." My jaw dropped. "What the hell?" Riley's face reddened. "#AlexsAdventure, #SupernaturalsUnmasked – it's all over the internet. We're viral, and we're screwed." Jake's expression turned grave. "People are demanding answers, and #SupernaturalsUnmasked is gaining traction." Mia's eyes widened. "What does that even mean?" Riley's voice was laced with concern. "It means people are starting to believe. They're connecting the dots – the footage, the disappearances...they're realizing supernatural creatures are real." Jake's eyes locked onto mine. "I've scanned the comments. Conspiracy theories, threats, harassment...it's getting ugly. But there's something else." "What?" I asked, my heart racing. Jake's voice dropped to a whisper. "People are coming forward, claiming to be supernatural. Werewolves, witches, faes...they're stepping out of the shadows." The room fell silent, minds reeling. Mia's whisper was barely audible. "What have we unleashed?" Riley's skepticism was palpable, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of fear. Jake's voice rose, filling the room with an eerie energy. "My grandmother's stories weren't just entertainment. They were warnings. We've opened Pandora's box, and there's no going back." The ticking clock on the mantle seemed to grow louder, marking the seconds as our world unraveled. "We can't just sit here and do nothing," Jake declared, shattering the silence as thick as fog that had settled over the room. I spun to face him, my voice a desperate plea, my words tumbling out like a confession. "We need to know if we're in danger. Tell us everything, now." Jake's expression darkened, his eyes blazed with a fierce determination. "I've been scanning the comments, messages, and mentions. The internet is awash with curiosity-driven chaos, but..." He hesitated, collecting his thoughts as the room seemed to hold its breath, the air heavy with anticipation. "...there are disturbing messages lurking in the shadows, like snakes waiting to strike. Conspiracy theories, threats, and harassment crawl across my screen like venomous spiders." Riley's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched, his face a mask of skepticism. "What kind of threats?" he growled, his voice low and menacing. Jake's voice dropped to a haunted whisper, his words barely audible over the creaking of the old wooden floorboards. "Some accuse us of faking it for attention, while others demand more footage or information. And then there are the threats that make my blood run cold—people vowing to hunt us down, hurt us, or worse." Mia's face paled, her eyes wide with terror, her hands shaking like leaves. "We need to go to the police." Alex shook his head, his voice laced with defiance. "No way. That'll only fan the flames." I leaned forward, my eyes locked on Jake's, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum. "No, not the comments. I'm talking about what we saw. You promised to tell us everything." Jake's gaze darted around the room, as if ensuring we were truly ready for the truth. "You mean about the footage?" he asked, his low, gravelly voice sending shivers down my spine. I nodded, my heart racing like a jackhammer. "Yes. What did we capture? What did we see?" Mia's voice trembled, her breath catching in her throat. "Was it really...what we think it was?" Alex shifted uncomfortably, his eyes avoiding mine as the room seemed to shrink around us. Jake's words hung in the air like a challenge, daring us to confront the impossible. The dim lighting cast long, ominous shadows across our faces. Werewolves, Fae, Witches...real?" I felt a shiver run down my spine, like ice trickling through my veins. Mia's eyes sparkled with curiosity, her face illuminated by the faint glow of the table lamp. "Tell us more." Jake nodded, his expression resolute. "It's time you knew the truth." His words hung in the air, a promise of secrets to come. Jake's eyes locked onto hers. "I'll tell you everything I know. But you have to promise me one thing." Riley's eyes narrowed. "What?" Jake's voice was low, urgent. "You have to promise me you'll believe." Mia's face paled, her eyes wide with fear. Alex's expression softened, and he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. "I'll keep you safe, Mia," Alex whispered, his voice filled with conviction. "No matter what's out there, I'll protect you." Mia melted into his embrace, her trembling subsiding. Riley's gaze lingered on the pair, his expression unreadable. Jake's voice broke the spell. "We need to understand what we're up against." Just then, a loud knock at the door shattered the tension. "Who could that be?" Mia whispered, her voice muffled against Alex's shoulder. I exchanged a nervous glance with Jake. "I'll get it." As I rose from my chair, the floorboards creaked beneath my feet. Riley scoffed, "You expect us to just take your word for all this supernatural stuff?" Jake's expression turned grave. "I'm telling you, this is real. My grandmother's stories weren't just entertainment; they were lessons passed down through generations." Alex shifted uncomfortably. "What lessons?" Jake's voice rose, filling the room with an eerie energy. "How to survive in a world where humans aren't the only predators." The room fell silent. Werewolves, Fae, Witches...real? I felt a shiver run down my spine. Mia's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Tell us more." Just then, another loud knock at the door made us jump. Riley's skepticism remained. "What's next? Vampires and unicorns?" Jake's expression turned serious, his eyes locked onto Riley's. For a moment, there was silence. Then, Jake's gaze seemed to say it all. Riley's eyes widened, his face pale. "What the actual f**k!" he exploded. "You're...you're not joking, are you?" Riley's voice trembled. Jake's silence was confirmation enough. Mia's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Tell us more." But Riley's mind was reeling. "Vampires? Unicorns? What else is out there?" Jake leaned forward, his voice low. "You want to know the truth?" Riley nodded, his eyes fixed on Jake. "The world is full of secrets," Jake began. "Secrets that would make your blood run cold." I stood, my heart racing, and approached the door. The knocking grew more insistent. I took a deep breath and turned the handle. The door creaked open. Elijah stood before me, his eyes burning with intensity. His gaze locked onto Mia and Alex. A low growl rumbled in his throat.
