Chapter 4: Ready to Conquer

828 Words
The July morning sun cast its warm glow over us as we prepared for our journey. Our mission was to reach Howl's Mountain and witness the breathtaking beauty of Crescent Valley. I parked my car at the trailhead lot, spotting Jake and Riley by Jake's old blue Ford pickup, its rusty bumper adorned with a faded "Live Life Off the Beaten Path" sticker. The truck's bed was loaded with our gear, and Jake's backpack leaned against the tire, ready to go. Alex and Mia were nearby, unloading Alex's newer Jeep Wrangler, its sleek design and bright blue color a stark contrast to Jake's rugged truck. I jumped out of my car, grabbing my gear and triple-checking my backpack for the umpteenth time. As I walked over to join the group, Jake caught my eye and smiled. He held up a small, dark leather box. "Gather 'round, guys," he said, his voice filled with excitement. Jake revealed small, dark leather bracelets adorned with intricate stones, runes, and beads. "These are for you guys," he said, his voice laced with emotion. "Graduation gifts and tokens for our journey. The protective runes will keep you safe." As Jake helped me fasten the bracelet, his fingers brushed against my wrist, sending shivers down my spine. "You look beautiful wearing it, Elizabeth," he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine. I felt a flutter in my chest as he held my gaze, the world around us melting away. My eyes drifted to Jake's wrist, and I noticed he was wearing a similar bracelet, but it looked older, more worn. I reached out, touching his arm gently. "Jake, your bracelet...it's beautiful," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. As I drew closer, I saw that the main stone was a huge emerald green, a color that seemed to echo the shade of my own eyes. Jake's gaze met mine, and he smiled, his expression softening. "Cute, isn't it?" he whispered, his voice low and husky. "That green happens to be my favorite color."I felt a flutter in my chest as he held my gaze, the world around us melting away. With our gear loaded, and our bracelets securely fastened, Jake explained our route. "We'll take the trailhead until the fork, then we'll take the right path," he said. "About twoish miles from the right, we'll find an old, forgotten trail. We'll follow that down and around, and it should lead us to the old trail to Howl's Mountain. After that, we should hit the river, and we will follow that upstream for a few days." Mia smiled, her eyes shining with anticipation. "Bring it on!" she exclaimed, shouldering her backpack. As we ventured into the woods, the trees seemed to close in around us, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. We walked for hours, the miles flying by, until we reached the fork in the trail. We took the right path, just as Jake had instructed, and continued on for another 2.5 miles. That's when we stumbled upon the old, forgotten trail. It was almost completely blended into its surroundings, the trail covered in a thick layer of leaves and underbrush. The only thing that gave it away was the old wooden signpost, its signs long removed, and a small railing a few feet down. If we hadn't been looking for it, we would have skipped right over it. We exchanged excited glances, our hearts racing with anticipation. This was it – the hidden trail that would lead us to Howl's Mountain. We climbed over fallen logs, pushed through dense, covered forest, and walked a few more miles, the trees growing taller and the air growing quieter. Finally, as we rounded a bend, a magnificent stone archway emerged from the trees. The circular design was covered in ivy and wildflowers, giving it a sense of agelessness. The archway seemed to pulse with a gentle, magical energy, as if it had been waiting for us all along. Intricate carvings depicting wolves, bears, stars, and runes adorned the archway's stones, telling a story of ancient myths and legends. The stones themselves were a warm, honey-colored brown, with a subtle texture that seemed to shift and glow in the sunlight. Alex's eyes lit up as he gazed at the archway. "Guys, wait up! I need to get a shot of this for the 'gram," he exclaimed, pulling out his phone. We smiled and posed, and Alex snapped a few photos before tucking his phone away. As we walked through the archway, I noticed that the signal on my phone had disappeared. I glanced around, seeing that the others were experiencing the same thing. "Looks like we're off the grid now," Riley said, grinning. We stood on the other side of the archway, looking around at the dense forest that surrounded us. The trees seemed to close in around us, casting deep, emerald-green shadows on the forest floor. What secrets lay hidden in this ancient, mystical place?
