Chapter 12: Werewolves, Fae, and Witches, Oh My!!!

951 Words
Jake's eyes locked onto ours, his voice steady, but a hint of trepidation lingered. "The stories are real. The monsters you saw, they're real." Mia's voice trembled, her hands clasped together. "What do you mean? This can't be happening." Jake's expression turned grave, his jaw clenched. "My family's known about their existence for generations. We've hated it, feared it, but we've always known." Riley's skepticism was palpable, his arms crossed. "You're telling us werewolves, Fae, and witches are real? That's insane." Jake nodded, his eyes pleading for understanding. "Yes. Werewolves are human shifters, capable of transforming into wolves. Wolves are the most common." Alex leaned forward, intrigued, his eyes wide. "How does it work?" Jake's voice dropped to a whisper, his words laced with reverence. "It's a genetic trait, passed down through bloodlines. Some families have it, others don't." I frowned, confused, my mind racing. "And the Fae?" Jake's eyes glazed over, lost in thought, his voice barely above a whisper. "The Fae inhabit a linear dimension, parallel to ours. They can cross the veil, but most humans can't." Mia's curiosity sparked, her voice laced with fear. "Why? What do they want?" Jake refocused, his expression somber. "Theories vary. Some say certain individuals can cross, but they never return. Others claim it's a bloodline thing." Riley's eyes narrowed, his voice laced with anger. "And witches? You're telling us they're real too?" Jake's expression turned resolute. "Witches are born with magical powers. Some gain it through dark means, but most are born with it." Alex's voice was laced with awe. "Incredible. And vampires?" Jake's voice dropped to a whisper. "Vampires need blood. Sunlight harms them, especially during mid-day." I frowned, intrigued, my heart racing. "How do they survive?" Jake's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze intense. "Some vampires tolerate sunlight during dawn or dusk." The room fell silent, our minds reeling. Mia whispered, her voice trembling. "What have we gotten ourselves into?" Jake's expression turned resolute, his voice firm. "I expected one or two monsters, but not a battle. We need to be prepared." Riley's determination blazed. "We need to know more." Jake rose, retrieving a worn leather-bound book from the shelf. The cover creaked, revealing yellowed pages filled with intricate illustrations. "Behold, the Compendium of the Hidden," Jake said, his voice low and reverent. As he opened the worn leather-bound book, the cover creaked, releasing a whisper of aged parchment. The pages, yellowed with time, revealed intricate illustrations and cryptic notes. "It's been in my family for many generations," Jake explained, his eyes gleaming with a mix of pride and trepidation. "A book of shadows, filled with monster knowledge." The similarity to a witch's grimoire struck me, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. Jake's fingers traced the pages, revealing: Werewolves, contorted in mid-transformation, their claws extended. Vampires, fangs bared, eyes glowing like embers. Witches, surrounded by swirling symbols, their eyes blazing with magic. Fae, ethereal and beautiful, with wings like butterflies. Demons, twisted and grotesque, their eyes burning with malevolent intent. Shifters, their forms blurring between human and animal. "Each page holds a secret," Jake whispered, his voice barely audible. "A warning, a protection, or a vulnerability." As I leaned forward, my heart racing, Jake's fingers brushed against mine, sending a jolt of electricity. "See this symbol?" Jake pointed to an intricate marking. "The Lunar Pack's sigil. And this?" A stylized cross. "The Witch's Covenant's protection symbol." The room seemed to shrink, the air thickening with tension. Riley whispered, his voice laced with fear. "What have we gotten ourselves into?" Mia's eyes were wide with terror. "Can we trust anyone?" Alex's face set in determination. "We need to learn more." I couldn't speak, my mind racing: What else is out there? How can we protect ourselves? What does Jake's family have to do with all this? The Compendium's illustrations seemed to come alive, warning me of lurking horrors. Riley's face turned beet red, his eyes blazing with fury. "Are you kidding me, Jake?!" he exploded, slamming his fist on the table. Mia jumped, startled, while Alex's eyes widened in alarm. "You dragged us into this mess, Jake!" Riley's voice rose. "We witnessed that...that battle, and now our faces are connected to this supernatural crap!" Jake's expression turned calm, but his eyes betrayed a hint of guilt. "Riley, I—" "No, Jake!" Riley cut him off, his words spilling out in a torrent. "You had no right to put us in harm's way. We're not equipped to deal with this!" I placed a hand on Riley's arm, trying to calm him. "Riley, we need to—" He shook me off. "No, Elizabeth! You don't get it. We're in this now, thanks to Jake's recklessness. Our faces are out there, connected to monsters and magic. What if they come after us?" Mia's voice trembled. "Riley, please—" "Please what?" Riley's voice cracked. "Please just forget that we saw werewolves and witches, and Fae tearing each other apart? Please just ignore the fact that we're now targets?" Riley's anger boiled over, and he slammed his chair back, standing abruptly. "I've had enough of this conversation," he snarled, turning to Jake. "You've gotten us into this mess, now fix it." Riley stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. The sound echoed through the silence, leaving us stunned. Mia's voice barely rose above a whisper. "What do we do now?" Alex's face was set in determination. "We need to learn everything we can from the Compendium." Jake's expression turned grim. "We prepare for the worst." As I listened to Riley's footsteps fading into the distance, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time.
