chapter 19

North The bundle of dry clothes slipped from my fingers, dropping to the dusty wooden floor with a soft, hollow thud. I couldn't move. My feet were practically glued to the floorboards. In the dim light of the empty cabin, with the fierce storm raging violently against the glass and wood outside, Tamara stood right in front of me… completely bare. My breath caught instantly in my throat, turning into a hot, suffocating weight in my chest. Every single protective, primal instinct that I had fought so fiercely to suppress and control for weeks snapped like a dry twig. As I stared at her, taking in her smooth skin, her flawless curves, and the slight, nervous shiver running through her frame, a violent, overwhelming wave of desire rushed through my veins. I wanted her. I wanted her so badly that it felt like my chest was being torn open from the inside out. The heavy ache in my bones wasn't just a physical longing; it was a ravenous hunger that defied every rule I had ever lived by. I wanted to pull her against me, to bury my face in the crook of her neck, to breathe in her scent until I completely lost my mind to the haze of the bond. I wanted her so much that I physically could not bear it. Every single muscle in my body strained under the tension, fighting a battle just to keep me from lunging forward and claiming what the Moon Goddess had written as mine. Yet, even as my wolf clawed at the walls of my consciousness, my mind…the conscious part of me —screamed much louder. “You are the Alpha.” There was a process. A law written in ancient stone, carved into the very traditions of the Night Sword pack. I couldn't simply take her because my wolf was howling for it in the dark. If I claimed her tonight like a selfish, undisciplined beast, without her first earning her place among the warriors, it would destroy her from the inside out. She had to prove herself. She needed the pack's respect. It didn't matter if the mating bond pulsed relentlessly beneath my skin, begging me to sink my teeth into her throat and mark her as my own. If she didn't earn her title during the trials, if she didn't force the ruthless Night Sword warriors to submit to her, our position would crumble into dust. They would see her as a mere token Luna, handed her crown solely because she was lucky enough to be my fated mate. Everything I was putting her through, the brutal exhausting training sessions, the harsh and cutting words, the seemingly impossible standards…was meant to forge her into impenetrable armor. It was supposed to keep her safe from the daggers of everyone and the judgment of a pack that smelled weakness like sharks smell blood. Yet, as I continued to stare at her, standing there shivering in the flickering shadows of the storm, all my grand plans and carefully constructed walls felt like a delusion. I took a slow, heavy step forward. Then another. Before I even fully realized what my body was doing, I had crossed the small, confined distance between us. I could feel the intense, natural warmth radiating from her skin, mixing with the damp, earthy scent of the rain clinging to her dark hair. Our close proximity was intoxicating, a drug that clouded my judgment. Combined with the heavy, sweet scent of her arousal and the raw, magnetic pull of the bond, it was simply too much for me to bear. A low, desperate groan rumbled deep in the back of my throat, vibrating against my teeth. ‘Goddess help me.’ I silently prayed to the Moon Goddess in a desperate plea, because I knew with absolute certainty that I was about to lose my mind. I wasn't just feeling my own frantic, uncontrollable need through the threads of the mate bond, I could smell her desire too. It flooded my senses, sweet, dizzying, and entirely mine. She was going to be the death of me. My mind raced through a thousand terrifying, conflicting thoughts in a fraction of a second. ‘Could I really take that risk? Could she really learn to love me one day, despite all the cruelty, coldness, and harshness I had thrown her way? Could a girl from a peaceful, pampered background ever truly forgive the monster I had forced myself to become just for the sake of survival in this wasteland?’ I looked deep into her wide, shimmering eyes, desperately searching for any hint of an answer in the dark. And for the first time in years, the impenetrable walls of ice around my heart cracked, letting a blinding ray of vulnerability bleed through. ‘Maybe’ a quiet, hopeful voice whispered somewhere deep inside my head. ‘Maybe I could take that risk. Just for tonight. Just to feel what it is like to truly have her, to hold her without the shadow of the pack hanging over our heads.’ So I stood there, utterly paralyzed between my duty as an Alpha and my overwhelming desire as a man, silently looking at her. I stopped fighting. I surrendered the control I had clung to for so long, leaving my soul completely bare and exposed in front of her, waiting to see what she would do next. The silence in the small cabin stretched endlessly suffocating, thick with a tension so electric. Then, her lips parted slightly. She called out my name in a soft, trembling whisper. It was far too quiet to truly be heard over the deafening roar of the pounding rain outside, but I didn't need my ears to catch it. I felt it straight through my soul. It was more than enough for me to recognize the deep, aching need through every fiber of her being. Tamara didn't run away. She didn't cross her arms or try to cover herself up from my intense gaze anymore. Instead, she took one little, hesitant step forward toward me, closing the remaining space between us. And that single, trusting step was all I needed to shatter the last remnants of my restraint.
