I carried Marcus as fast and as far away from the forest edge as possible and in the dead of the night, we finally arrived at The Safe Place which was the cabin Veronica and I found three years ago where we've used as our emergency refuge ever since.
I banged on the door before looking through the window. The lights were on which meant she was here. Veronica had been practically living here since she came back to Ashwood because she had nowhere to go. I smelled her before knocking again.
"Veronica!" I called out. "I know you're in there. Open the f*****g door!" I looked to Marcus who was shivering uncontrollably, exhausted. Beads of sweat clung to his temples and his eyes dizzied.
