Chapter 3 The next day dawned bright and clear. Rob usually favored sleeping in, but he’d been up with the sun on his first morning at the beach house, though he’d chosen to stay silent in his bed until he’d heard the muffled sounds of others moving around the house. He sat up in the bed and stretched carefully. He could feel his joints crack and groan in discomfort, surefire signs that his pain would flare up soon. His shoulders rolled as he slipped from between the sheets and padded softly across the room to press his ear to the door. Low voices shot back and forth. A door downstairs opened, then slammed shut. The second floor remained quiet. Rob wondered who was left in the house, and whether it would be awkward for him to wander down and scrounge up some breakfast. He hadn’t met any
