Chapter 15

Eimear felt the weight of expectation lift from her shoulders. “Thank you, both of you,” she said softly, standing on her tiptoes to kiss each of them in turn. The moment was tender, but their little bubble quickly burst as the sounds of pack members arriving for the celebration reached their ears. Laughter, chatter, and the distant notes of music filtered in, grounding them in the reality of the evening. With a sudden burst of confidence, Eimear grinned. “Come on,” she said, her voice full of playful determination. “I can’t wait to show my sexy mates off to everyone.” Both men chuckled, their deep laughter filling the room as they followed her to the door. As they descended the stairs and made their way toward the gathering, Donna spotted them first. She elbowed the person beside her and whispered something, setting off a ripple of murmurs. A hush had fallen over the crowd when Eimear stepped into the clearing. All eyes turned to them, curious and watchful. Eimear’s initial confidence faltered under the weight of so many stares. Instinctively, she drew her wings closer, as though shielding herself from the scrutiny. Her stomach twisted, and the faintest tremor ran through her hands. Ronan immediately noticed her discomfort. Without hesitation, he stepped around to her side, took her hand firmly in his, and said with a grin, “Come now, my gorgeous mate, take me to the food. I’m ravenous.” His playful tone eased the tension in the air, and Eimear couldn’t help but smile. Aidan placed a steadying hand on her lower back, guiding her forward, while words of reassurance flowed through their bond. “We’ve got you, Eimear. Let them see the incredible mate we’re so proud of.” Declan’s booming voice broke through the quiet, drawing everyone’s attention. “Perfect! You’re here!” He clapped his hands together and grinned broadly at the trio. “We’re heading over to the tree to do introductions before we eat. Let’s get this started!” Before Eimear could respond, Ronan’s stomach let out a loud, growling protest. The sound was so unexpected that Eimear burst into laughter, the tension evaporating in an instant. Ronan rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “See? My mate was taking too long to feed me,” he said with mock seriousness, earning chuckles from nearby pack members. “Come on, then,” Eimear giggled, her confidence returning. She tugged them both toward Declan, her hand still tightly clasped in Ronan’s, while Aidan stayed close behind. At the base of the ancient tree, the pack members who had found their mates at the ball gathered together, forming a small but significant group. Eimear stood between Aidan and Ronan, her heart suddenly pounding in her chest. She could feel the weight of the pack’s gaze on them. Her wings twitched at her back, betraying her unease. She clenched her fists at her sides, forcing herself to breathe evenly. This was tradition, she reminded herself. She could endure it. For them. Through the bond, Ronan’s voice hummed, light and teasing. "Relax, darling. They’re not half as intimidating as you think." Beside her, Aidan’s steady presence radiated calm, anchoring her fraying nerves. She knew her father’s routine by heart; he had done this for her brothers when they found their mates. The newly mated members would be introduced one by one, with the Alpha saving his own family for last. The first three introductions went smoothly. Declan spoke with pride as he announced each new pair, sharing their names and how they would strengthen the pack. The crowd clapped politely for each, but Eimear couldn’t help noticing how their attention kept drifting back to her and her mates. Finally, the moment she had been dreading arrived. Declan cleared his throat, his deep voice carrying easily across the crowd. “And now, it is my honor to introduce two exceptional individuals who have joined our pack as mates to my daughter, Eimear.” His words sent a ripple of whispers through the crowd. “Ronan O’Neill, from the Ossory pack, a wolf of strength and unwavering heart.” Gasps echoed through the clearing. The Ossory pack was legendary, known for their strength and secrecy. No one in the Haven pack had ever found a mate from Ossory before. Ronan, calm and composed, gave the crowd a respectful nod, his piercing eyes scanning the sea of faces. “And Aidan Ó Faoláin,” Declan continued, his voice steady though the air seemed to tighten, “ a Seelie Fae warrior of unmatched skill and loyalty.” The silence that followed Declan’s announcement stretched thin, taut as a bowstring. Eimear’s wings curled instinctively closer to her back, a protective gesture she couldn’t suppress. She felt Ronan’s hand squeeze hers, while Aidan’s steady presence at her back was a silent vow of support. Then the whispers began—soft at first, like the rustle of leaves in the wind. They grew louder, overlapping, until the air buzzed with barely-contained astonishment. “A Seelie Fae?” someone muttered, the words tinged with awe and disbelief. Another voice, hushed and urgent, asked, “Ossory? Isn’t that where—” But the words trailed off into a murmur. Declan’s proud gaze swept over the crowd, silencing them with its weight. Slowly, a single clap rang out, hesitant but bold. Another joined it, then another, until the clearing resonated with applause. It wasn’t the raucous cheers of complete acceptance, but it was enough to steady Eimear’s frayed nerves. Through the bond, Aidan’s voice was a warm caress. “You’re incredible, Eimear. They’re starting to see it too.” Ronan’s humor cut through the tension. “Are we done? I still haven’t had a bite to eat.” Eimear exhaled, a soft laugh escaping her lips. She squeezed Ronan’s hand, brushing her fingers lightly against Aidan’s. With the introductions complete, the pack began to trickle back to the Alpha house, where the celebration feast awaited. The air buzzed with excitement, though Eimear noticed how the crowd seemed to part around her and her mates like a stream around a rock. Most of the pack members kept their distance, casting curious, cautious glances in their direction. Only her family and their mates stayed close, chatting easily and offering reassurances through the bond. Eimear tried not to let the isolation sting, but it was hard not to notice the hesitation in the eyes of her packmates. As the night wore on, the atmosphere began to shift. The allure of curiosity was too strong to resist. Slowly but surely, pack members began approaching them, one or two at a time. “What’s it like in the Ossory pack?” one of them asked Ronan, awe tinging their voice. “Is it true you live in the deep woods, far from humans?” Ronan answered with a mix of humor and pride. “We’re not that isolated,” he chuckled, “but yes, the woods are our home. Keeps us sharp.” One of the elders approached Ronan, her eyes studying him with an intensity that made the nearby crowd hold their breath. "They say the Ossory wolves don’t play nice," she said gruffly. Ronan’s grin was slow and disarming. "Only if you challenge us to a game like Monopoly," he quipped, earning a bark of laughter. Others, emboldened by Ronan’s openness, turned to Aidan. His calm, composed presence drew them in like moths to a flame. “Are you really Seelie?” one pack member blurted, wide-eyed. Aidan smiled politely. “I am,” he said simply, his melodic voice carrying a warmth that softened the sharp edges of their questions. “But I’m not here as a Seelie Fae—I’m here as Eimear’s mate.” His straightforward answer earned him a few nods and even a couple of smiles. The more he spoke, the more the pack seemed to relax around him, their initial wariness giving way to genuine interest. Eimear stayed quiet for much of the evening, observing the interactions with a mix of relief and pride. Her mates were handling the situation far better than she could have hoped, their natural charisma breaking down barriers she’d feared might never fall. By the time the feast was in full swing, the once-wide berth around their trio had all but disappeared. Laughter and conversation flowed freely, and Eimear even caught a few of her packmates clapping Ronan on the back or clinking glasses with Aidan.
