CHAPTER 13; SHADOWS BETWEEN HEART.

1204 Words
*Arya’s POV* The air was thick with the scent of pine and the sharp crispness of dusk. The quiet in Kendrick’s pack had become my solace—the only place where my thoughts weren’t screaming. Tonight, the stars blinked down like silent witnesses, and for once, I didn’t feel entirely alone. I’d come out to the northern edge of the territory, where the moonlight sparkled over the river. The same river where I had once collapsed, hopeless, broken... and where Kendrick had found me. My fingers brushed the surface of the water, remembering. And then I sensed him. Not Kendrick. Someone else. “Couldn’t sleep either?” Ryker asked, stepping out from between the trees. I gave a small smile. “Not tonight.” He didn’t press. Instead, he sat beside me, close but respectful. Ryker had become a constant over the past few days. He didn’t demand, didn’t expect. Just... listened. “You always find the quietest spots,” he said gently. “They help me think.” I paused. “About what I lost. And what I became.” There was a long silence before he spoke. “You’re stronger than you know, Aria. You didn’t break. You survived.” I turned to him, startled by the warmth in his voice. “You barely know me.” He smiled softly. “I know pain. I know what it looks like in someone’s eyes. You wear it like armor.” His words made my chest ache. He reminded me of what I used to be before everything shattered. Somehow, being around Ryker helped me remember that girl—not just the Luna who had been rejected, but the warrior who was learning how to rise again. We spoke for hours—about everything and nothing. Ryker told me about the mate he lost years ago to rogue wolves. His voice broke when he spoke her name. And something in me cracked open too. “Do you ever stop missing them?” I asked. He shook his head. “No. But eventually, you learn to carry it without letting it destroy you.” I nodded slowly. “That’s what I’m trying to do.” And for the first time, I truly meant it. *Kendrick’s POV* From my office window, I could see the river’s edge—and them. Aria and Ryker. Together. That sour taste in my mouth—jealousy. I’d never let myself feel such emotions before. I wasn’t the type to get possessive. But with Aria, it was different. The bond was real. Unavoidable. Unforgiving. She was mine. And yet, she was confiding in him. I wasn’t blind. I knew Ryker was drawn to her—who wouldn’t be? She was fierce, beautiful, scarred but still standing. And Ryker… he was good. Loyal. Trusted. Which made it all the more difficult. When I finally walked away from the window, I knew I couldn’t ignore this tension brewing inside me. Later that night, I found her back in the training hall, practicing alone. “You’re avoiding me,” I said quietly. She turned. Sweat clung to her temples, her chest rising with deep breaths. “No. I’m just... thinking.” I stepped closer. “About Ryker?” Her eyes narrowed. “I’m allowed to talk to people, Kendrick.” “I know,” I replied, softer this time. “It’s not about jealousy. I just... I care. And I’m not used to feeling this.” She took a breath. “I care too. But I’m not ready to give my heart away again without caution.” “And Ryker?” I asked, my voice almost a whisper. “He’s a friend,” she said. “Someone who listens. Nothing more.” I nodded. But a part of me still twisted with doubt. *Ryker’s POV* I knew what I was doing. I was getting close to her. Too close. But every time I saw Arya smile—even the smallest one—I felt like I was witnessing something rare and powerful. And that terrified me. Because she wasn’t mine to love. She was Kendrick’s mate. Fated. But still, I couldn’t help the way I felt. The quiet connection between us was undeniable. I kept telling myself it was just friendship. That I just wanted to protect her. But it was more than that. I was falling—for someone I could never have. * Maya’s Jealousy* Far from the quiet forest and late-night conversations, another emotion was festering—*envy*. Maya had seen them. She had watched from the shadows when Arya kissed Kendrick in the training grounds. And something in her snapped. How could she—an outsider, a rejected Luna—be the one who held Kendrick’s gaze now? She had loved Kendrick for years. Trained with him. Fought beside him. Been there through battles and bloodshed. And yet, this... this woman had come in and taken everything. “No,” she hissed, alone in her chambers. “She doesn’t belong here.” The accident she’d staged at the training grounds wasn’t enough. Aria had walked away bruised but stronger. And Kendrick had only drawn closer to her. She needed a new plan. Back in Arya’s old pack, tension brewed between Kade and Lira. They had been mated now for weeks, but Cade had not so much as touched her. Not once. She stood before him now in their shared room, wearing nothing but silk and fire in her eyes. “You’re my husband,” she hissed. “Yet you act like I’m a stranger.” Kade turned away from her. “I didn’t choose this, Lira.” She grabbed his arm. “But you accepted it.” His jaw clenched. “I made a mistake.” “Mistake?” Her voice cracked. “You still love her, don’t you?” He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. “You think I don’t see how you look at her picture when you think I’m not watching? You think I don’t hear you whispering her name in your sleep?” Lira stepped closer, shoving his chest. “You still love that pathetic excuse for a Luna!” Kade flinched, but his silence was louder than any confession. With a scream of frustration, Lira pushed past him and stormed out of the room. As the door slammed behind her, Kade sat down heavily, the weight of his guilt pressing in. * Arya’s Conflict* Later that evening, I stood alone by the same river. Ryker’s words echoed in my mind. Kendrick’s kiss still tingled on my lips. But in the midst of it all, the fire inside me hadn’t dimmed—it had sharpened. *Revenge.* I still hadn’t forgotten what Kade and Lira had done. The betrayal. The humiliation. The hatred. And now I had power—support. I had Kendrick. And I was willing to use him if that’s what it took. My wolf, Lily, growled softly in disapproval. “I know,” I whispered. “I shouldn’t think this way.” She whimpered, brushing against my mind. But I couldn’t let go. Not yet. And as the wind rustled the trees, I knew something was coming. Something that would change everything. --
