CHAPTER 9;WHISPERS BENEATH THE MOON

970 Words
The silence after battle is louder than the chaos itself. Arya stood motionless, staring at the spot where the rogue’s body had fallen. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, but it wasn’t fear. It was the *awakening*. Whatever was inside her—it was growing, pulsing, stretching to the surface like a second skin trying to claim her. Kendrick approached slowly, careful not to startle her. “You heard it again, didn’t you?” he asked gently. She nodded without looking at him. “The whisper. Same voice. Same warning.” Kendrick placed a hand on her shoulder. “You’re not alone, Arya. Whatever this is… we’ll face it together.” For once, she didn’t pull away. *** Later that night, the healer visited Arya again. Her wounds from the ambush were already closing—too fast, even for a werewolf. He frowned as he cleaned the dried blood on her arm. “Something’s changing in you,” the healer said quietly. “And it’s not just your healing.” Arya swallowed. “Do you think I’m cursed?” The old man shook his head. “No. You’re not cursed. You’re... chosen.” She looked up sharply. “Chosen for what?” “That,” he said, eyes grave, “only the Moon Goddess knows.” *** *Meanwhile…* In the shadows of a dim cabin beyond the borders of Kendrick’s territory, Lira paced in frustration. “They should’ve killed her!” she snapped. Her father—cold and calculating—watched her from a chair by the fire. “Arya is not so easy to eliminate.” “She’s ruining everything,” Lyra spat. “Kade still asks about her. He still—” “Still loves her,” her father finished. Lira’s eyes blazed. “Then we have to try again. Next time, I’ll go myself if I have to.” “No,” he said sharply. “There’s a prophecy surrounding her. We underestimated it once. We won’t make that mistake again.” *** *Back at Kendrick’s pack…* A week passed. Kendrick kept his distance during the day, but his eyes always found Arya. In training, in passing, during meetings—his gaze lingered like a tether pulling tighter each time. Still, he didn’t press the bond. Not yet. Not until he understood the full weight of what she carried. But the bond grew restless. One evening, he found her near the edge of the woods, seated on a stone, gazing up at the stars. “You’re not sleeping,” he said quietly. “I don’t want to see the battlefield again,” she replied. “It feels too real… too close.” He sat beside her, their shoulders nearly touching. “I used to dream of a life outside my old pack,” she said. “A quiet life. Maybe even a mate I could trust. But now... I dream of war.” “You were never meant to be quiet, Arya,” Kendrick said. “The Moon Goddess made you loud—so loud the world would have no choice but to hear you.” She turned toward him, her breath catching. His hand brushed hers—hesitant, gentle, yet grounding. “I see the fire in you,” he murmured. “It matches mine.” “And the storm?” she whispered. He smiled faintly. “That too.” Then, silence. Not awkward, but deep. Comfortable. As if their souls were speaking while words failed. *** *Back at the packhouse…* Jealous whispers spread like wildfire. “Why is she still here?” “She’s cursed.” “She’s controlling the Alpha—using the bond.” But Kendrick ignored them. Until the Council called a vote. “You’re compromising our safety!” one elder barked. “She brought rogues. She brings danger.” “She also saved our warriors,” Kendrick snapped. “She risked her life for wolves who spat in her face!” “She is a threat to the hierarchy—” “I’ll decide who’s a threat to my pack,” Kendrick growled, eyes glowing. “And if any of you question my judgment again, you can face me in the ring.” The room went silent. *** Later that night, Arya stood outside her quarters when a low growl rumbled from the shadows. A younger wolf—Zeke, one of Maya’s allies—stepped out, teeth bared. “We don’t want you here.” Before Arya could respond, Kendrick appeared like smoke. In a blur, he shoved Zeke back with one hand and growled, “Step out of line again, and you’re out.” Zeke whimpered and ran. Kendrick turned to Arya, anger still dancing in his eyes. “You shouldn’t be out alone,” he said. “I can handle myself,” she replied. “I know. But that doesn’t mean you have to.” He stepped closer. This time, when his hand cupped her cheek, she didn’t flinch. When their lips finally met, it was slow—like a promise, not a possession. Her fingers curled into his shirt as he deepened the kiss, firm yet tender. When they pulled apart, breathless, he whispered, “I waited long enough.” She smiled softly. “So did I.” *** But the peace didn’t last. The next morning, a blood-marked arrow was found at the border. A message. Kendrick held it in his hand, jaw clenched. “They’re testing us.” Arya’s voice was steady. “Then let them. I won’t run anymore.” As they stood together, side by side, the wind carried the whisper again—only this time, Kendrick heard it too. _"Your power will either unite... or destroy you."_ And for the first time, Kendrick believed it wasn’t just a prophecy. It was a warning.
