Chapter 13

Sonia woke up gasping for air. Never in her life had she had such a s****l dream about a man. The way he touched her, the way he kissed her, oh, and the way he loved her. Sonia groaned. It was all because of Andrew. Does she want it? Does she want to experience the sensation that he caused in her from time to time? She had thought about him several times during the day, but never thought he would act on it and not like this. His announcement or, better yet, his proposal last night shook her to the core. She was expecting him to do the things she dreamt about or to kiss her as he did before. Even the kiss took her by surprise. It was more intense. But marriage was not part of the deal. What was she going to do about it? Sonia needed to think. Work was out of the question. She would never get anything done. All she thought about was Andrew’s question. She slowly got up, made her way to the bathroom, and prepared herself for the day. She then got breakfast, checked her messages, and made sure that Andrew was gone for the morning. The baby kicked at that moment, and Sonia stopped, placing her hand on her stomach. She wondered what Andrew wanted with a very pregnant woman anyway? There’s nothing sexy about the way she looked, not to her. So what does he want from her? She paused, in name only! She pondered that thought. What does that mean? How can any marriage be in name only? Could it be that easy? Could she just lay all her problems at his feet? “Pash, I wish.” She said out loud. Sonia saw a note taped to the door and knew he had left it for her. She wondered, did he think she had made a decision so soon? She took up the note and slowly read its contents. He just wanted her to know that he wouldn’t be home for dinner and that he would give her the time and space she needed to make her decision. Sonia sighed and then headed down to the beach. She didn’t go too far. It's better if she just sat in her normal spot and thought for a while. Sonia began to think about all the things that could go wrong if she married Andrew. What would Sandy and James say? What would Jon think or even Aunt Rita do? What would be her reaction? How would they react to her marrying a man she hardly knew? How would she get out of it if it didn’t go the way she thought it should go? What does Andrew want from her? All these questions and more plagued her mind, but no answers came immediately. The baby, on the other hand, seemed to have his idea about things. He began to kick and move around, causing her pain, and she leaned forward to see if it would ease. Just then, a gentleman stopped and asked if she was okay. Sonia groaned while rubbing her stoma. Looking up, she saw kindness and a warm smile. “Everything’s fine, thanks.” “Are you sure? I could sit with you for a while, just in case.” “No, I'll be fine; this baby has a mind of his own.” The gentleman sat down anyway, “Listen I’d feel better if I just wait here for a while. Sinclair’s the name, by the way.” He said, extending his hand. “Hi, I’m Sonia.” She shook his hand. “You know if you talk to the baby, it calms them.” “Yes, I know I talk to him often." “It’s a boy then, how wonderful.” Sonia could not help but smile. “Oh yes, it’s a boy.” “My sister has a little girl. I can remember those days of morning sickness and the baby moving around all hours of the night. Kept her up, but she loved it.” He smiled at her, trying to keep her mind off the pain. His smile reminded her of Andrew, and a worried look came upon her face. She had forgotten why she came out in the first place. It was to consider what Andrew asked her last night. But this man took her mind off of that at the moment. He continued to talk about his sister and his niece. It was a welcomed distraction for her. Once she was sitting up and feeling better, Sinclair continued down the beach. Sonia stayed seated a while longer before she went back to the house. She still did not have clarity, so Sonia decided that she would stay out of Andrew’s way for a while. She went into her office and forced herself to work until bedtime. That night, as she slept Sonia dreamt about Andrew and what their life could be like if she allowed him to continue to think that he wanted to be with her and take care of her and her son. At some point, Sonia became comfortable with the idea of being with Andrew, but not just in name only. Too many things reminded her that her life was not a great one and that things could change at any moment. For the next two days, Sonia got up, had breakfast, alone, then went down to the beach where she met Sinclair, and they talked. Sonia used him as a sounding board about some parts of her life but did not tell him all of her dilemmas and enjoyed their conversations. Talking about her family and her friends seemed to always turn into a search, a search for what she did not know or cared to ask. They did the same thing every day. They talked, and she felt at ease. He would leave, and she would go back to the house and work until bedtime. For the rest of the week, Sonia did not see Sinclair and missed their conversations. It was a perfect distraction; she didn’t have to think about what Andrew asked her. Now she has to think about it because it’s been a week since Andrew asked her to marry him and she had not given him an answer. By Saturday, Sonia decided to turn Andrew down, no matter how much she wanted what he proposed and would love for Justus to have a father. She can’t tie Andrew down like that. Sonia decided to concentrate on her work— she had a project to finish and another one to start. While putting the finishing touches on the book, her phone rang. She thought it was Andrew calling her—he’s been so patient with her and stayed out of her way for the last week. "Hello, Andrew." "Sonia, it's your-." It was her mother. Once she realized it was her mother, Sonia hung up the phone. She is in shock looking at the phone. Sonia jumped when it rang again and again, she refused to pick it up. Then the machine picked up. “Sonia, Sonia, I know you’re home. Pick up the phone. Sonia, I need to talk to you. Why are you doing this, baby I’m sorry. Listen, I want to be in my grandchild’s life. Sonia, do you hear me? Sonia, look, I know I’ve. . .” That was the end of the message— thank god it ran out. Sonia thought. Then the phone rang again but Sonia walked out of the house. She headed to her sanctuary, the place where she could think, the one place she finds peace. All she wants to do is walk along the beach; let the water and the sand have their way with her feet wishing they would wash away her problems. Sonia needed to get away from her thoughts, but that was not possible. How did her mother find her now? She’s been so well hidden. The only outside contact she’s had was…, Sinclair. How could he do this to her? She thought he was one of the good guys. It had to be him, she thought. All this time she thought he was being a friend, and now... Things around her didn’t feel real anymore. Her life has become more complicated than she ever expected. She thought it would be better to be on her own and take care of herself and her baby with the help of those who love her, but now she didn’t know what to think or do. Sandy and Andrew are the only two people she could talk to right now, but Sandy’s away with her husband and Andrew—, if she broke the silence between them she would have to give him an answer. Sonia realized that she needed Andrew in more ways than one— she could talk to him and feel at peace in his presence. He made her laugh when she didn’t want to. He takes care of her and the baby already, so what more was there to this thing? He’s more than a friend, and he understands what she’s going through. The call from her mother; Sinclair’s betrayal, and her loneliness showed her that Andrew is the answer she needed right now. Just as she was about to walk back up the beach, the man she knew as Sinclair appeared. Sonia became angry. She knew she should walk away. Don’t pay him any mind. But he kept coming in her direction. “What do you want?” She asked. “Your job here is done; did you tell her everything I told you? Was that part of your job, too?” “Sonia I’m sorry I mislead you. You have to understand your mother only wanted to know you’re alright.” “Is that what she told you? Of course, she told you that. Well, let me clue you in on something, Mr. Sinclair, neither my mother nor that man she’s married to will have my baby.” “Sonia, your mother doesn’t want your baby; she just wants to be there when her grandchild is born.” “If my mother wanted to know where I am or if I’m alright, she should have been there for me when I needed her.” Sonia began breathing hard her hands began to shake— the baby began to move around, causing her pain. It was time for her to go. “Look you’ve done your job, now go and don’t look back, forget you found me and leave.” “Look, I can see that you don’t need anyone’s help, but she is your mother. I just wanted you to know that if you need a friend.” “A friend is what you call, friendship.” She yelled. “A friend does not hurt you intentionally. A friend would find out everything first before doing what you did to me. No, we could never be friends, but let me ask you a question: Does she know you used her to get to me.” “Whom are you talking about?” Simon was surprised and tried to hide it. “Don’t play games with me now, it’s a little late for that don’t you think? My aunt Rita, of course, does she know.” “How long have you known?” Simon was truly surprised. “I didn’t, but you just confirmed it for me. Now leave us alone.” Simon couldn’t say another word; he decided it was best not to upset her anymore. He watched as she walked back up the beach toward the house. Then, he walked back up the road to where he parked his car. He knew it must be hard on her being alone and trying to raise this baby, but he has a job to do. Once he arrived at his car the phone rang. “Hello.” He said knowing it was Lilia. “Did you speak to her?” Lilia asked frantically couldn't wait any longer. Things have to change now before it’s too late. “Yes, Mrs. Harding but.” He paused, not knowing exactly what to say. “She just wants to be left alone.” “I can’t do that because she's about to have my grandchild.” Lilia was shaking, her nerves were shot, this craziness had to end, and she was more determined to see it through. Simon has given her all the information she needs, and now it’s time for her to be a mother to her daughter. “What about Mr. Harding, will—?” “Simon, you must never give out this info. I want to make things right with my daughter.” “As you wish, Mrs. Harding, I’ll seal all the information. If I may say, Mama, your daughter is a very strong, courageous woman, and she’ll make it.” “Thank you for that, Mr. Sinclair. By the way, how did you finally find her?” “I’d rather not say, but she’s doing okay.” “Well thanks again for finding my daughter, and I’ll forward the rest of your money.” “No, I don’t need it. Give it to your grandchild he’ll need it.” Then he hung up. Simon’s mind was on Rita and what to say to her about this. How was he going to explain this to Rita without losing her? Sonia, still fuming about all that just took place, started up the beach. The whole thing seemed unbelievable. Things have been changing in her life so fast, and she didn’t have time to work out her next move. Her life had become more complicated than ever. She thought it was supposed to be easy by herself. When she got to the house Rita met her at the door looking sad. Rita knew after seeing Sonia and Simon together that her fears were well-founded. She could tell by Sonia’s expression that the whole thing was upsetting. Rita just couldn’t let it go and asked. “How do you know Simon?” “You mean Sinclair, right?” Sonia was even more upset; he lied all across the board. “No, his full name is Simon Sinclair, the man I’ve been seeing.” “Well Simon or Sinclair or whoever he is was sent here by my mother, did you know that.” Rita didn’t flinch at Sonia’s harshness; she knew this would happen sooner or later. Deep down, she knew who he was, but she fell for him and wanted to be wrong. Now it’s caused problems for Sonia. All she could say was. “Honey I’m so very sorry.” “Sorry, what are you sorry for? He was the one using you to get to me. Look, I’m sorry for yelling at you, I just----.” Sonia sighed and then said. “Would you believe that he wanted to be friends like I would after what he did? Look, I don’t want to think about this anymore, she’s found me now I have to think of what to do about it. Excuse me, I have to call Andrew.” “No Sonia you need to rest, you’ve been under too much stress, and that’s not good for the baby.” “I know but–.” Sonia needed to call Andrew; he would make it all better. “No, go lay down, and I’ll fix you some lunch before I leave.” “Okay, could you make enough for Andrew too; I think he’ll be home for lunch.” Sonia then went into her room and lay across her bed. Maybe she does need Andrew more than she thinks. She started to think of all the benefits of being married to such a wonderful man. Sonia fell to sleep thinking about all the possibilities of being Andrew’s wife. The picture was clear. Her baby had no face, and her parents were there. Her father picked up the baby. “I will raise you to be just like me.” He said, and then he began to walk away with the baby in his arms. It was like a looking glass; she was on the outside looking in. He’s not hers anymore he had her father’s face now. There was a crib, and she walked over to it only to see her father stirring up at her. He’s shaking his head. “You disappoint me, Sonia.” Sonia stepped back, saying. “No, no, where is my baby, where is he?” She yelled. “He’s not yours any longer. He belongs with us, your mother and I.” “No!” She cried out, waking up in fright. Her son will never turn out to be her father or live with her parents, not if she can help it. Picking up the phone, she called Andrew at the office. Jan answered as usual. “Hastings Construction Jan, speaking. How may I help you?” “Jan it's Sonia. Can I speak to Andrew?” Sonia didn’t like this woman at all. Jan hates it when Sonia called because Andrew dropped everything to speak with her, but not this time. She had control, neither Andrew nor Sammi was around to stop her, and they’ll never have to know. “Ah, Sonia he’s in a meeting right now. Could you call back, or would you like to leave a message?” Cause girl, he’ll never get it. Jan thought to herself. “Yes, could you ask him to call me right away, it’s important.” Sonia hated leaving that message, but she needed to speak with Andrew right away. Jan could hear the urgency in her voice and decided to pry. “Is there anything I can help you with? I mean I’m his secretary.” “No, I just need to speak to him right away.” Sonia didn’t want to talk to Jan any longer. She had a feeling Jan doesn’t like her, well the feeling’s mutual. Right now, she just needed to get this over with before she changed her mind. “Okay then, I’ll see that he gets your message.” Not," Jan thought, and after she hung up, she threw the note in the garbage. She was not going into the conference room to break up the meeting with Harding Corporation. If she interrupted, Andrew would make the call. No, she's just going to leave well enough alone. Jan rewrote the note, of course, leaving out most of what Sonia said, then placed it on Andrew’s desk. In the meantime, she’s determined to find out all about Sonia. Maybe she’s just after Andrew’s money, better yet, his company. Well, Jan intended to put a stop to Ms. Sonia. Jan was looking for something to make Andrew see that she was the only woman for him. There was a time he would be more social and cordial, but now, since Sonia, he ignored her advances. Huh, no man can or ever will resist me. A devious smile crossed her lips as she started to plan how to get Andrew back. Andrew finally emerged from the meeting and asked Jan if there were any messages for him. She answered. “Not at this time.” “Okay if I get any calls from Sonia I’ll be at the site with Mr. Springfield, please page me.” “Will do, boss,” Jan said with a smile.
