A new day and all’s right in her world, but Sonia didn’t want to get up yet. It meant she would have to work, but she wasn’t feeling up to it. Sitting up slowly so as to make sure that nocuous was at bay, Sonia crawls out of bed. Still feeling a little queasy, she walks to the window and opens it to let the ocean breeze in then heads for the bathroom.
Getting dressed she went in search of some breakfast and after that into her office. Sonia spent her day reading and drawing, changing words and fixing pictures.
Several hours after she started illustrating Sonia took a break. It's time for her walk on the beach. This is a normal routine. Stretching her back she got up. Putting on her sweater and her shoes, checking to make sure she had everything, she headed out.
Walking along the sand with her shoes in her hand, Sonia enjoys the sounds of the ocean. Everyone on the beach was laughing, playing with their children, friends and loved ones. Sonia took it all in, a happy sound of laughter, family, joy and love. Soon she will be doing the same thing with her own child and be just as happy.
Just then a little girl threw sand on Sonia’s feet, she smiled. Sonia didn’t mind, the sand felt warm. It was a good feeling she looked at the girl then kept on walking. This was such a peaceful time for her, her problems seem so far away. This was her time to map out life for herself and her child. She can’t wait until he’s born, it’s just a wonderful feeling and she’s going to make their life special and whole without a man.
After some time her body began to ache. Sonia feels tired.
Looking at her watch she saw it was 3:30 pm. It’s really late; she’s been gone for two hours.
Where has the time gone? She’d better get back before Sandy sends out the troops.
By the time she reaches the house she sees Tom, a local police officer and friend of her Aunt Rita’s. He was waiting for her, she knows. ‘Uh oh, if Tom’s her then Sandy must have called shoot.’ She was trying to avoid another confrontation with Sandy. “Hey Tom, Tom!” she shouted as she walked toward him waving. She waited for him to turn around. “What’s up?”
“Hay their Sonia, nothing much, just came by to check on you.” He said with a smile. “You know Sandy called.”
“Yah I figured that out. I had a feeling she would call before I got back. As you can see I’m fine I just went for a walk.” She looks out at the water. “You know how calming it is for me to just stroll along the beach and think.”
“I know, but you know that Sandy gets worried, she cares about you, now I have to call her and let her know I found you.” As he is speaking to Sonia he could see Sandy’s car approaching.
He only hoped that there wouldn’t be an argument again.
“Why?” Sonia asked knowing that Sandy will be upset with her for going off and not letting anyone know.
“Why? Did she just ask why? Do you believe her?” Sandy replied while getting out of her car.
Sonia cringed as she turned slowly to see her friend was visibly upset and worried, she felt the anger like heat coming from Sandy.
“Where have you been for two, count it now, two blessed hours?” Sandy’s fuming, this was not the first time this has happened and they asked Sonia not to go out alone unless she tells someone where she’s going. It scares Sandy to think something could have happened and no one would know where she was or how to reach her.
Oh boy here we go again. “Sandy.” She said calmly, but Sandy was not listening. Okay this was bad, she’s yelling and Sonia doesn’t want to fight. Not now since she had such a calming walk.
“Do you know I’ve called you non-stop, when I didn’t get an answer the first time I became frantic. Why do you persist on going off by yourself?” Sandy was heated and did not care right now what Sonia had to say.
“Sandy, Sandy!” She all but yelled then waited for her friend to look at her. “I’m fine, I only went for a walk, I lost track of time.”
“Lost track, have you lost your mind, look if you don’t take care of yourself—well--- I don’t know okay.” Sandy’s breathing heavy. Arguing with Sonia took a lot of her and she’s not even pregnant.
Tom decides to get into the conversation before they say something to each other they would regret. “Sandy she’s fine stop yelling.”
“Yah, stop yelling.” Sonia said also with a slight smile on her face.
“And you, Sonia you know that Sandy cares a great deal about you and the baby so don’t go off again without letting her know okay.” These two have been friends for a long time and they tend to argue a lot since Sonia’s pregnancy, but Tom can see the love between them.
Sonia began to pout. “Sandy I’m sorry, I know you worry about the both of us but we’re okay. Besides, Josephine told me I need to walk as much as possible.”
Sandy took a deep breath then said. “I’m sorry too, okay, you know I worry.”
“I love you and you’re forgiven.” Turning to Tom Sonia smiled and said, “Thanks Tom for stopping by.”
Nodding he said, “Sure thing Sonia, Sandy. By the way Sonia, have you heard from your aunt?” He asked with a twinkle in his eye.
“No but I know she’ll call sooner or later.” Sonia smiles and she has a feeling he cares about her aunt more than he says.
“Well could you tell her I said hello?”
“Well, you have a good day?”
“Sure will, ladies, have good evening.” Tom walked away smiling at the two friends. Sandy means well and Sonia needs her time too. When he looked back they were hugging and he smiled.
Sandy called James to inform him that Sonia’s all right. They started toward the front of the house when Sandy’s cell rang; it was Andrew calling to cancel out on dinner, again. Sandy didn’t know if to mention it to Sonia or not because it didn’t matter to her any way. Once Sandy told her that Andrew was not coming to dinner Sonia didn’t care one way or the other; she’s not looking forward to his company there’s just something about him that bothers her and she didn’t want to be around him.
She quickly changed the subject; Sonia started telling Sandy her plans for the baby’s room and she asked Sandy to go shopping with her later to get some things, when she gets a chance.
Sandy was glad that Sonia was able to think on her walk and hopes Sonia is not worrying about the dreams she has been having.
Standing there Sonia extended her hands to Sandy. They hugged and smiled at each other. Sandy’s just afraid that anything could happen to the baby, Josephine, Sonia’s doctor told them to keep an eye on her progress. This baby means everything to them and she intends to do everything she can to help Sonia get through this pregnancy without any problems or hitches.
Sandy figures since she was already off, she didn’t see any reason why they couldn’t do that shopping for the baby now. Sonia jump’s at the opportunity to do some shopping just concentrating on the baby right now.
They went to Baby’s R Us and found some wonderful things. Sandy talked Sonia into doing her registry there and they made a list of things she needs for the baby: A nice oak wood crib that would convert into a bed later, matching chester drawers. They also collected a diaper genie, a bouncer, and an all in one sterilizer with bottles. Then they went into other baby stores and picked up a set of receiving blankets, and a medicine kit along with other things the baby would need.
Sonia was glad that she let Sandy talk her into doing this now. She’s only five months but one never knows.
Once they finished with the registry Sandy bribed Sonia into shopping for herself, which Sonia hasn’t done lately. Anything new she has Sandy and Rita brought it for her. Sonia was relieved and thankful for her friend Sandy who’s a true friend in every way. After all the shopping they ended up at the grocery store. Sandy went in to pick up some vegetables, pasta, chicken, fruits and some juice for Sonia and then picked up a bottle of wine and some beer for everyone else. When they were finished they headed to Sandy’s to get dinner going.
Sandy made Sonia sit and relax while she did the cooking. Sonia was only allowed to pass her things while they talked. Sonia didn’t even hear when James came in until he came up behind Sandy and they began to make out like they haven’t seen each other in days. Sonia watched, while feeling out of place. Sonia also wished that she could have this, what she sees Sandy and James share. After a while Sonia cleared her throat, both James and Sandy smiled at her.
James went and sat next to Sonia kissing her on the cheek as they began catching up on each other’s day. When dinner was done they sat down to eat, Sandy’s stir-fry vegetables, pasta and chicken dinner.
Sonia marveled at what an exceptional dinner it was and how the baby didn’t make too much of a fuss.
Sandy on the other hand began to wonder about Andrew, why does he feel the need to bow out every time she mentions dinner and why doesn’t he want to be around Sonia. Sandy knew if she brought him up it wouldn’t sit well with Sonia or James for that matter but soon.
As Sonia was leaving, Sandy asked if she was okay with Andrew living above her. Sonia taught about it for a while. What could she say to her friend? He’s already moved in and so she’ll deal with it. “I’m okay. I just have to get used to the idea, that's all.”
James gave Sandy a look and she didn’t say another word. He got ready to walk Sonia home and really wanted to know how she really feels about Andrew. As they started down the beach James began, “You know we love you right.”
“Yah James I know you and Sandy love me and the baby, that’s why you worry about us.” Sonia could tell where this was heading.
“Yah, I know my wife has a tendency to be zealous, but it’s done with a good heart.” James said.
“I know, look I’m glad it was just us tonight.” Sonia replied.
“You don’t like Andrew?” James asked. He wanted to know what she really felt about the situation and the way it was handled. Her happiness was important to him.
Sonia was tired. She had been so sleepy lately. Right now she’s restless and as sleepy as she was, she can’t get comfortable enough to sleep. She decided doing some work might help and went into her office. Try as she might, nothing came to mind, so drawing was out of the question. Sonia stood up looking out the window at the night-sea and thought about her life as it was now, while rubbing her stomach. Deciding to have this baby on her own has caused her to think about family a great deal. What to do when the baby’s born, how to raise him, of course with love and understanding. Something she’s never received from her father. Just then the baby moved causing her some discomfort. She decided to get some warm milk, which always helps her to sleep. While she’s warming the milk she thought about tonight’s dinner, Sonia did not really want to go if Mr. Hastings was going to be there, but Sandy and James would not take no for an answer. It’s a fact that they want her to get to know Mr. Hastings better, but she doesn’t want to be close to anyone male right now, besides James. She had to get used to the idea of someone else being around the house, but that’s all she’s willing to do. If she had the strength she would be upset, but they have her best interest at heart.
Once the milk was warm she took it with her into her bedroom and wondered about the man upstairs. Maybe she should try to be cordiale and if it doesn’t work out she could always evict him.
Getting into bed she wondered if she would have any dreams tonight. Sitting up drinking her milk Sonia decided to concentrate on her work, on the next project. That was where she put all her excess energy. After some time she turned off the light and fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sonia hardly saw Andrew. He kept his word. She hasn’t seen him in a month. She noted to herself the kind of person he was, honorable among other things.
Pouring warm milk into her mug Sonia went to get some work done. Walking into her office she placed the mug of warm milk on her desk and then turned to look out at the ocean.
This house has such love in it and it calms her. This was part of the reason she loved coming here in the summer. Placing her hand on her tummy she spoke to her child. “You’re going to be happy here, little one just like I am.” Smiling because the baby responded with a kick she turned back to her desk and got started.
Sitting in her chair Sonia realizes that for a 5-month pregnant woman she’s not showing. But soon everyone who didn’t know will see for himself or herself and what she will say to Mr. Hastings about it. Pulling herself to the desk she began to draw. It helped her to relax when she creates pictures that coincide with the words but it will be better when it’s her own book.
Sonia stayed there for several hours working. Drawing things she feels her child will one-day love. The illustrations she comes up with will have to match the words. It’s the creative process that keeps her in one position for so long even in her condition. Sometimes she would change the wording or re-write the book, with permission. This gives her much pleasure.
Once she gets into her work it’s hard pulling herself away and so her day often goes. She felt cramped after a while and stopped. Looking at the time she remembered dinner later with her friends. Sonia sighed; she’s not looking forward to this at all. He will be there this time Sandy made sure of that. She made it her business though to put out something to wear just in case she got caught up in her work. Sandy’s been planning for this night since he moved in, so better get it over with.
Sonia took a breath then checked her work, she went over it as much as she could it was her best ever. She got up, cleaned up and got dressed. Her lime green dress that Sandy brought her was laid out on her bed. Once she was dressed she put on her comfortable shoes then picked up her bag, once outside she locked the door, checked it then started down the beach.
Sandy and James were nervous because they felt she would not come because of Andrew but when she showed, they both breathed easy. They know that this would be uncomfortable for her.
Sonia came in putting her rap in its usual place, kissing James on the cheek hello then hugging her friend. They headed to the kitchen while James set up the dining area and put on some music. While watching Sandy cook, Sonia felt like she was at the doctor’s office waiting for bad news, well nothing like that but she was not looking forward to this evening with Andrew Hastings. Sandy notices how tense Sonia became and says. “Sonia lighten up, it’s only dinner.” Then Sandy decided to try and keep Sonia’s mind occupied. She started talking about the past at school.
Sonia had to laugh because Sandy changed her major so many times that no one knew what she took from one semester to the next. They continue to reminisce and Sonia felt so much better.
A half an hour later James came in to join the fun not too long after Andrew showed up. He brought a bottle of wine.
