Chapter 2

2708 Words
As she was getting out of bed, before she could get herself together she heard a noise. It sounded like someone was moving around in her place. Sonia sat there waiting to see if someone would burst through her bedroom door. Nothing, then she heard it again, the noise. It seems to be coming from the living room. It sounds like someone’s moving chairs across the floor. Sonia soon relaxed because the only person it could be was Sandy. Sometimes Sandy comes by early and helps to clean up the place. Sonia is grateful for the help. In her condition, she could do but so much. Getting out of bed Sonia put on her robe and went in search of her friend. As she walked down the hall, she heard the noise again, only it was coming from upstairs. Sonia knew when she went to bed last night that she locked all the doors. ‘This is not good, I am alone and pregnant; what can I do to defend myself.’ Walking into the kitchen she grabbed the biggest butcher knife she could find and then heads upstairs. Once she reached the top of the steps Sonia stopped. She looked down at her stomach, what the heck can I do against a burglar; I must be out of my mind. “Oh darn.” She whispered. “I have a knife in my hand, I’m pregnant, and I’m all alone, what the heck can I do? I don’t want my baby to get hurt.” She said, then thought about calling someone or wondered if she should wait, “Okay crazy thought maybe the person will leave. No this is my place.” She said to herself. Gathering her thoughts and her strength she tested the knob. The door gave way, it wasn't locked, she peeked in; she couldn’t see anyone so she opened the door further and walked in. All the sheets were off the furniture. Sonia stopped and nervously said, “Okay that’s strange, why someone robbing the place would remove the sheets off the furniture?” Sonia continued to look around. First, she looked into the kitchen. There are boxes and dishes all over the place. Okay someone’s moved in, but Sandy didn’t say anything? Sonia checked some of the other rooms; they were in the same condition. She went back to the large bedroom. They’re boxes all over, but they’re stacked neatly, not cluttered as some of the other rooms. Then she noticed the clothes on the bed. Judging from the size and the look, she concluded that they were men’s clothing and wondered who was in her house at this time of the morning. Just as she was coming out of the room, Sonia came face to face with a man she’s never seen before. He has a towel wrapped around his waist. His chest was bare, still wet from his shower. Her eyes caught the water droplets that were rolling down his very muscular chest. She gasped, raising the knife yet drinking at the sight of his marvelous body. “Woo wait.” He said lifting his hand as if about to be arrested. “I’m sorry Ms. Harding I didn’t mean to startle you,” Andrew said, looking at one very beautiful woman with a knife in her hand pointed at him. Sonia couldn’t speak just yet. She was admiring his body, as her eyes slowly moved from his waist up to his face. He was unlike any things she’s ever seen, and then she looked into his face, realizing the situation, she said. “Who, who are you, and, what are you doing in my house,” Sonia said holding the knife higher, she was frightened, but he knew her name. “I’m Andrew Hastings, your new boarder, tenant, whatever you want to call it.” He could tell by her reaction that she didn’t have a clue he was going to be here, odd. “My new what . . . !” Sonia lowered the knife slightly and began to rant, “I can’t believe that Sandy and James decided without telling me anything. Ooh, wait till I get my hands on them.” “Excuse me?” Andrew asked. Sonia shook her head and raised the knife. Andrew could tell that she was upset. “Didn’t Sandy and James tell you, I’d be moving in last night?” “I knew, I was getting a tenant, but..., how could…, no one told me how soon.” Sonia was furious rightfully so but did not trust what he said enough to lower the knife. In her mind, she said, ‘Sandy’s going to pay for this.’ “You didn’t know I was coming?” He asked, and then paused. “Look, if it’s a problem, I’ll just get a room at the motel till I find another place.” He said, yet thinking to himself, how sexy she looked holding that knife. What a turn-on. Andrew did not want to cause any problems and if it helps he’ll leave. “Ah Ms. Harding, I need to get my clothes.” He said pointing in the direction of the clothes on the bed. Sonia looked back into the bedroom. “Oh, ah, yes.” She moved to the wall still holding the knife up at him. Andrew smiled, he had to admit, she looked better than her picture. He was having fun just watching her become more and more agitated. Not knowing what to do about him or the situation for that matter. Sonia thought she saw a smile on his face as he walked into the room. He finds this funny, well she didn’t, she was embarrassed, “I... well...” Sonia was at a loss for words, what was there to say. She was about to question him when she heard Sandy coming up the steps. Sonia lowers the knife, but not too far. “Sonia, where are you? Are you up here?” Oh, darn Sandy thought, she wanted to get her before they met. “Yes,” Sonia yelled waiting until her friend ascended the stairs. The moment Sandy came through the door she started, “Why didn’t you inform me that I was about to get a tenant and how soon said tenant would be here?” “Oh, I see you’ve met Andrew,” Sandy said trying to make light of the situation, she knew Sonia would be upset. That’s when she noticed the knife in her hand. “Sonia! What are you doing with that?” “I was going to use it if I had to.” She said waving it at her friend. “Okay, now, can you explain why Mr.—.’ “Hastings,” Andrew replied from the room wondering what was about to happen between the two women. From what James told him they grew up together and they’ve kept in touch over the years. Once he was dressed Andrew came out of the room and looked from Sandy to Sonia. He saw a great deal of love between the two. He can tell that Ms. Harding’s angry. She reminded him of a firecracker. Andrew was glad he was not on the receiving end of that pop, sizzle, and snap. Smiling to himself he could not help but notice how sexy she looked even angry. This was all so amusing. Sonia looked at him, and said, “Yes thank you, why it is, Mr. Hastings, is in my home, and I know nothing about it.” She asked, still waving the knife. “Sonia, we told you we were checking out several people’s backgrounds, so far he’s the only one we feel we can trust. Mr. Hastings has his own construction company, all his references check out and he’s willing to help out in any way he can.” Sandy said trying to let Sonia know they did a thorough job. “We picked the best out of all the other candidates.” “Yes, but you didn’t inform me or let me meet them before you made a decision. That’s not fair.” Sonia said, sounding like a child who didn’t get what they wanted. Still waving the knife around feeling empowered. Enough was enough Sandy thought. She looks at her friend and grabs her hand with the knife. Turning to Andrew she said. “Excuse us I have to speak to Sonia alone. Sonia comes along, let’s go get breakfast and discuss this, downstairs.” Sandy said, leaning her head towards the door. Sonia looked at Sandy and was ready this time to fight. As she was being pushed out the door she looked back at Andrew one last time. Once there were downstairs Sonia laid into Sandy. “No, no, no, absolutely not, Sandy I already told you—.” “Sonia calms down, you'll only hurt the baby. Look, let’s find you some breakfast then we can talk, calmly.” Sandy said. As Sandy moved about the kitchen a knock came on the front door. Both Sandy and Sonia looked at each other and then at the door. Sandy motions for Sonia to get it, but she refused to move. Sandy sighed and went to get the door. Andrew was standing there with a bowl of fruit and some muffins. Sandy winked at him and thought what a smart man. Attempt to win your landlady’s favor with gifts, nice. He whispered. “Is everything okay?” He peaked around Sandy to see Sonia. All he saw was her back. “Sure, no problem she’s harmless. Anyway, can I count on you for dinner tonight, say around seven?” Sandy wanted them all to be friends. You know, close. Everyone was going to be spending time getting to know each other because he was now Sonia’s tenant. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” He said, still whispering. He didn’t want to intrude. “Oh don’t worry about her,” Sandy said loud enough for Sonia to hear her. Sonia replied, “I heard that.” Sonia wanted to be upset, but it takes too much of her strength. Her friends wouldn’t pick just anyone. She waited until Sandy and Mr. Hastings finished their conversation. Andrew smiled at Sandy and said, “I’d better go. I’ll call later to let you know if I’ll be there.” “I’ll be waiting for your call.” Sandy watched as he went back upstairs but said. “Thanks, Andrew.” Closing the door she turned to her friend, “Sonia look what Andrew brought us, breakfast, how nice.” Sonia didn’t say a word. She knew what was coming. Logic, that’s Sandy's forte, being logical. Sandy can always tell when Sonia became unmovable about something. It’s just a look she gets on her face that gives her away. “You know, he’s not a bad person once you get to know him, with his background he can fix things around the house. If there’s something you can’t reach or something too heavy, he can help. I’m not asking you to get chummy with the guy just, get to know him.” “No thanks, I don’t see the need, you're right down the beach, Josephine’s just a phone call away so are Aunt Rita and Tom---.” “That’s not the point. Right now the shop’s doing great business, James and I won’t be able to keep an eye on you, as we’d like. James likes him.” “Good for James, here’s a thought, why don’t you let Mr. Hastings live with you.” Sandy sighs while walking to the counter. “Okay, what if you were to get sick, we don’t know how long it would take for us to get here. He’ll be upstairs, and you can call him right away. What if the baby decided to come early, and James and I are out of town or at a restaurant; your Aunt might be away traveling, what then Sonia.” Sandy could see that she has her full attention; she didn’t allow Sonia to argue or upset herself. Eventually, Sonia gave in. It’s too hard butting her head against a brick wall. Sandy can be just that when she puts her mind to it. As they were sitting eating, Sonia noticed Andrew as he was leaving she guessed for work. She has to admit, he is quite handsome in a rugged sort of way. That should not matter to her, no, not to her. She can still remember what happened between her and Alec. Still, she could not keep her eyes off, Andrew. Her mind recalled what he looked like earlier in just a towel with drops of water running down his chest. Sandy noticed the way Sonia was looking out the window; she leaned to see what was so interesting outside. She saw Andrew’s jeep pulling away, smiling she asked. “Are you okay?” Sonia replied while shaking her head. “Fine, everything is just fine.” Then she got that sick feeling and was off the stool and running to the bathroom. Sandy knew the baby was causing her to be sick when she eats “Are you ok in there?” “Yes, I’m used to it by now,” Sonia said coming out of the bathroom. Sandy places her arms around Sonia and then asks, “What are you doing today?” “Oh the usual, work then a walk. Oh, I spoke to Jon yesterday, he says that everything is going well and once this book is finished, I can start work on my stuff.” “Great, but don’t overdo it today okay.” “Yes, mother I’ll do as you say,” Sonia replied smiling. “Ha, don’t be funny. You know I’ll worry until I see you later.” “I know, don’t worry, they’re working on some new books that need my kind of illustration.” “Don’t work too hard and get some rest.” Sandy knew all too well that Sonia wouldn’t listen, but she wishes she would. I’ll be fine.” Sonia knew all too well that Sandy would drive James crazy with worry. “Well, keep the phone near you,” Sandy said knowing Sonia will turn it down once she starts working and probably forget to turn it back up when she was finished. As Sandy’s speaking, Sonia’s mind was wondering about her new tenant. He is quite pleasing to look at and down to earth, she decides to ask about him. “Do you know why Mr. Hastings chose to move here?” “Not yet, but the construction company’s his, I guess he just started his firm.” “Oh, okay, I see you guys did your job.” Sonia has to admit she’s intrigued somewhat by what she’s seen already. Just then James came through the door. “Time to go, Sandy, hi Sonia how’s my favorite girl?” “If you wanted to know you should have called me about...” Sonia pointed upstairs. “Oh, didn’t Sandy tell you?” He asked, looking at his wife. Sandy knew she was going to hear it from James once they were in the car. Sandy smiled, and after making sure that Sonia had everything she needed for the day they left. Sonia cleaned up the dishes in the sink then went into her office and began to illustrate for the day. There are times when creativity flows and she gets caught up. If it weren’t for the baby she wouldn’t take a break. But then there are days that she gets an idea and won’t move for hours. After drawing for an hour or so, Sonia decided to have lunch. Tired of dried toast she made some soup and had some crackers. Hoping the baby would allow her to keep it down. It would be the first solid food she’d be able to keep down in a while. She tends to overdo it sometimes, forcing herself to eat. She ate moderately and then headed down to the beach for a stroll.
