The silver mark on Nora's wrist glowed like moonlight.
Every eye in the Dragon Court was fixed on it.
Not a single voice dared break the silence.
The elderly dragon in white robes remained on his knees, his hands trembling as though he had seen a ghost.
"The Mark of the First Flame..." he whispered. "After all these centuries... it has returned."
Nora quickly covered her wrist with her other hand.
"What mark?" she asked. "I've had this since I was born."
The old dragon slowly looked up at her.
"You... don't know what it is?"
She shook her head.
"It is only a birthmark."
"No," he said quietly. "It is much more than that."
Before he could explain, a sharp voice cut through the courtyard.
"Enough!"
Princess Seraphine stepped forward, her crimson dress flowing behind her. Her beautiful face was calm, but her eyes burned with anger.
"One glowing mark changes nothing."
She pointed directly at Nora.
"She is still a human."
Many dragon nobles nodded in agreement.
"The princess is right."
"Humans cannot rule dragons."
"This is madness."
The murmurs grew louder until they filled the courtyard.
Nora stood frozen.
She had expected to die.
Instead, she had become the center of a conflict she did not understand.
Kael raised one hand.
Silence returned instantly.
His golden eyes swept across the crowd.
"This woman is not a sacrifice."
The words struck the court like thunder.
"What?"
"Did His Majesty just refuse the treaty?"
"The human kingdoms will declare war!"
Kael remained unmoved.
"Nora Ashwood entered this palace under the ancient law of sacrifice."
He turned toward Nora.
"From this moment forward, that law no longer applies to her."
The captain of the royal guards stepped forward.
"Your Majesty, with respect..."
Kael looked at him.
The captain immediately lowered his head.
"The treaty has protected both kingdoms for one thousand years," the captain continued carefully. "If we refuse the sacrifice, the human kings may believe we have broken our promise."
Kael's expression never changed.
"The treaty demanded a willing sacrifice."
He looked at Nora.
"I refuse to accept her."
The court gasped.
No Dragon Emperor had ever rejected a sacrifice.
Not once in recorded history.
Seraphine laughed bitterly.
"So this is how it ends."
She folded her arms.
"You would risk peace for one human girl."
"I would."
His answer came without hesitation.
"And if the human kingdoms march to war?"
"They may."
"And if dragons die because of your choice?"
Kael's eyes grew colder.
"I will bear that burden."
The weight of his words silenced even his enemies.
Nora stared at him in disbelief.
Why?
Why would someone this powerful protect a stranger?
She stepped closer.
"Your Majesty."
He looked at her.
"If accepting me keeps everyone safe..."
She swallowed.
"...then let the sacrifice happen."
Several dragons nodded.
Finally, the human understood.
But Kael shook his head.
"No."
"You don't even know me."
"I know enough."
"My life isn't worth another war."
His voice softened.
"Your life is worth more than you realize."
Nora's heart skipped.
Before she could answer, a dragon soldier rushed into the courtyard, breathing heavily.
"Your Majesty!"
Everyone turned.
The soldier dropped to one knee.
"A messenger has arrived from the Kingdom of Valoria."
Kael nodded.
"Bring him."
Moments later, a human knight entered the palace under heavy guard.
His armor was dusty from hard travel.
When he saw Nora standing beside the Dragon Emperor, his eyes widened.
He quickly bowed.
"I bring a message from King Aldren."
He unrolled a sealed scroll.
The courtyard became silent once again.
The knight read aloud.
"To the Dragon Emperor."
"The sacrifice offered by the Kingdom of Valoria belongs to the dragons by ancient agreement."
"If the sacrifice is rejected..."
"...the treaty is broken."
"If the treaty is broken..."
"...Valoria will consider it an act of war."
A heavy silence followed.
The messenger lowered the scroll.
"Our king requests the immediate return of the sacrifice."
He looked directly at Nora.
"You must come home."
Nora's chest tightened.
Home.
She had wanted nothing more only hours ago.
Now...
She wasn't sure where home truly was.
Kael stepped forward until he stood between Nora and the messenger.
His voice echoed through the entire palace.
"Return to your king."
The messenger waited.
"And tell him this."
Golden flames began to dance around Kael's body.
The air itself trembled beneath his power.
"The Dragon Empire rejects no treaty."
"We reject only injustice."
"Nora Ashwood belongs to no kingdom."
"No king."
"No treaty."
His eyes blazed like molten gold.
"From this day onward..."
"...she is under my protection."
The messenger's face turned pale.
"And if my king refuses?"
Kael answered without raising his voice.
"Then he may come and ask me himself."
The courtyard fell silent.
Even the dragons who doubted him could feel the terrifying certainty behind his words.
War was no longer a possibility.
It had become inevitable.
Far away, beyond the mountains, King Aldren watched smoke rise from the Dragon Peak and clenched the arms of his throne.
"So..."
"They have chosen war."
He slowly stood.
"Summon every general."
"The Dragon Emperor has made his move."
Back at the Sky Palace, Nora watched storm clouds gather over the distant horizon.
She had volunteered to save one little girl.
Instead...
She had become the spark that could set the entire world on fire.
