CHAPTER 2: GHOST ORCHID

1195 Words
Rainwater dripped from Vaelora’s black gloves as she stepped into the abandoned subway tunnel beneath Neo-Vesper City. The darkness smelled of rust, oil, and old blood. Far above, police sirens screamed through the streets while helicopters searched the skyline. News drones buzzed across giant holographic billboards displaying emergency warnings from Astra Dominion Tower. WANTED TERROR SUSPECT ARMED AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS A blurry image of Vaelora flickered across every public screen. She walked deeper into the tunnel without looking back. Not once. Pain burned through her shoulder where a bullet had grazed her during the rooftop escape, but she ignored it. Pain could wait. Survival came first. The hidden safehouse was buried behind an old maintenance gate covered in graffiti and decades of dust. Vaelora pressed her palm against the scanner hidden inside a broken pipe. ACCESS GRANTED. Metal doors unlocked quietly. Inside, the underground bunker glowed with dim blue lights and humming computer systems. Weapons lined the walls beside stacks of fake passports, encrypted devices, and emergency medical kits. Nysera Quinn stood near the center console waiting. The moment she saw the blood on Vaelora’s shoulder, her eyes widened. “What happened to you?” Vaelora removed the blade strapped to her thigh before placing it carefully on the table. “I walked into a trap.” Nysera frowned. “That’s impossible. Nobody knew about the mission except—” She stopped speaking. The silence between them sharpened instantly. Vaelora slowly looked up. “Except us.” Nysera crossed her arms. “You think I betrayed you?” “I think somebody did.” The tension inside the room became suffocating. Then Nysera exhaled sharply and grabbed the medical kit. “If I wanted you dead, Vaelora, I wouldn’t miss.” Vaelora allowed Nysera to disinfect the wound, though her instincts remained alert. Trust was dangerous in their world. Especially now. Nysera carefully removed the damaged fabric around the bullet graze. “You’re lucky.” “Luck is for civilians.” Nysera rolled her eyes. “You really do enjoy sounding dramatic.” Vaelora ignored the comment and pulled the stolen quantum drive from inside her dress. The silver device reflected the bunker lights ominously. Nysera stared at it carefully. “That tiny thing caused all this chaos?” “Project Helix is bigger than we thought.” Vaelora inserted the drive into the main terminal. Encrypted files instantly flooded the screen. WARNING — LEVEL OMEGA CLEARANCE UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS RESULTS IN TERMINATION “Comforting,” Nysera muttered. Lines of encrypted code scrolled rapidly across the monitor while Vaelora worked silently. Her fingers moved with frightening speed. Breaking military encryption normally took weeks. Vaelora did it in six minutes. The screen finally unlocked. Both women froze. Satellite schematics. Global defense systems. Launch authorization codes. Military network access. Nysera stepped closer slowly. “This isn’t intelligence theft,” she whispered. “It’s control.” Vaelora’s gray eyes narrowed. Project Helix wasn’t a weapon. It was a system capable of hijacking military satellites across the world. Whoever controlled Helix could shut down governments… or destroy them. Then another file opened automatically. SUBJECT LIST — INTERNAL THREATS Dozens of names appeared. Politicians. Military leaders. Operatives. Assassins. Some marked ACTIVE. Others marked ELIMINATED. Nysera suddenly went pale. “Vaelora…” Vaelora looked closer. One name blinked red on the screen. VAELORA VEX STATUS: EXPOSED TERMINATION AUTHORIZED The room fell silent. Nysera stared at her in disbelief. “They issued a kill order on you.” Vaelora’s expression remained cold, but inside, something twisted sharply. Kill orders only came from the highest intelligence level. Someone powerful wanted her erased permanently. Then another line appeared beneath the order. ASSIGNED OPERATIVE: KAEDRIN VALE Nysera cursed under her breath. “No…” Vaelora’s eyes hardened instantly. She knew the name. Everyone in covert intelligence knew the name. Kaedrin Vale. The man agencies sent after impossible targets. The man who never failed. And now he was hunting her. Suddenly— WARNING ALERT SAFEHOUSE LOCATION COMPROMISED Red emergency lights flashed violently across the bunker. Vaelora grabbed her gun immediately. Nysera spun toward the surveillance monitors. Black armored vehicles screeched to a stop outside the subway entrance. At least twenty tactical soldiers emerged. More flooded the tunnels from the eastern access routes. “They found us already?!” Nysera shouted. Vaelora’s jaw tightened. Too fast. Far too fast. Which meant one horrifying thing. The tracker wasn’t on the safehouse. It was on her. Gunfire exploded above the bunker. Metal doors shook violently. “Move!” Vaelora snapped. The women rushed through the underground corridor as explosions blasted through the entrance behind them. Dust rained from the ceiling. Bullets tore through the walls. One soldier rounded the corner— Vaelora fired instantly. Two shots. Dead. Nysera hacked the emergency exit panel while alarms screamed overhead. “They’re blocking the northern tunnels!” “Then we go south.” “There is no south exit!” Vaelora reloaded calmly. “There is now.” She tossed a grenade behind them. BOOM. The tunnel wall exploded outward into an abandoned railway shaft hidden behind concrete. Smoke flooded the corridor. The women sprinted through darkness while soldiers shouted behind them. Flashlights scanned the tunnels. Bullets ricocheted off rusted metal. Nysera nearly slipped on wet tracks. “Why are they hitting us this hard?!” she gasped. Vaelora’s voice remained terrifyingly calm. “Because somebody’s scared.” They reached an old train platform buried beneath the city. Broken signs flickered weakly overhead. The entire station looked forgotten by time. Then Vaelora stopped moving. Nysera crashed into her shoulder. “What are you doing?!” Vaelora slowly looked toward the shadows ahead. Someone stood there. Tall. Still. Watching them. Black coat. Dark gloves. Rainwater dripping from sharp features. The stranger stepped forward beneath the flickering station light. Kaedrin Vale. Even Nysera went silent. He looked nothing like the rumors. He looked worse. Cold gray eyes locked onto Vaelora with unnerving intensity. His dark hair was damp from the rain above, and the scar along his jaw only made him appear more dangerous. A silenced pistol rested loosely in his hand. Not raised. Not lowered. Waiting. Kaedrin studied Vaelora carefully. Almost like he couldn’t believe she was real. Finally, he spoke. “You’re harder to kill than expected.” Vaelora aimed her weapon directly at his chest. “You should’ve sent more people.” For one long moment— Nobody moved. The station echoed with distant sirens and dripping water. Then Kaedrin’s gaze shifted slightly toward the black orchid tattoo behind Vaelora’s ear. Something dark flickered across his expression. Recognition. Confusion. Maybe even shock. But it vanished instantly. More soldiers stormed into the station behind him. Weapons raised. “TARGET ACQUIRED!” Laser sights filled the platform. Nysera whispered, “We’re surrounded.” Kaedrin never looked away from Vaelora. Then quietly— Unexpectedly— He lowered his gun. Everyone froze. One of the soldiers shouted in confusion. “Commander?!” Kaedrin’s voice turned deadly cold. “She’s mine.” Vaelora narrowed her eyes. Something about this felt wrong. Very wrong. And deep inside— For the first time in years— She felt fear.
