CHAPTER 18: MEMORY OF FIRE

917 Words
The arctic facility descended into chaos. Sirens screamed endlessly through collapsing corridors while red emergency lights flashed across walls coated in ice and blood. Vaelora dragged Kaedrin through the smoke-filled hallway as gunfire thundered behind them. His condition was worsening fast. Blood soaked through her hands no matter how tightly she pressed against the wound in his chest. Kaedrin stumbled hard against the wall. “Go,” he rasped painfully. Vaelora didn’t even look back. “Not happening.” Another explosion shook the facility beneath the ice. Chunks of frozen steel crashed from the ceiling behind them. Soryn’s operatives were everywhere now. Closing in. Kaedrin grabbed her wrist weakly. “Vaelora.” She finally stopped. He looked pale beneath the flashing crimson lights. Too pale. “You need to stop Helix.” Fear twisted sharply through her chest. “I’m not leaving you.” “You may not get a choice.” The words hit hard. Because deep down— She already knew. Then suddenly— The corridor doors slammed shut around them automatically. Massive steel barriers sealed every exit. Lockdown. Vaelora spun instantly toward the control panel. Dead. No response. Wonderful. The overhead speakers crackled softly. Then Soryn’s voice echoed through the corridor. Calm. Patient. “Orchid.” Vaelora’s entire body tensed. Kaedrin’s expression darkened instantly. “Don’t answer him.” But Soryn continued smoothly: “You’ve spent your life searching for the truth.” The emergency lights flickered violently. “And now you’re finally ready to remember.” Pain stabbed suddenly through Vaelora’s skull. Sharp. Blinding. She staggered hard against the wall. Kaedrin caught her immediately. “Vaelora!” The speakers crackled again. Then Soryn spoke four words. > “Eclipse remembers the fire.” The world stopped. Vaelora froze completely. Something shattered open inside her mind. And suddenly— She remembered everything. --- White laboratory walls. Children screaming. Needles pushed into tiny veins. Cerberus scientists watching from behind glass. Young Vaelora strapped into a restraint chair while machines pulsed violently around her. Then— Soryn kneeling beside her. Younger. Kinder. Or pretending to be. > “Listen carefully, Orchid.” “When you hear the phrase… Eclipse remembers the fire… you will awaken.” Pain exploded behind her eyes. Back in the corridor, Vaelora collapsed hard to her knees. Kaedrin grabbed her shoulders desperately. “What’s happening?” But she barely heard him. The memories kept coming. Black Aether burning. Lyrielle dragging her through collapsing hallways. Gunshots. Smoke. Then another memory— Far worse. Young Vaelora standing inside a control chamber surrounded by satellite displays while scientists applauded. A terrified child beside her whispered: > “What are they making us do?” And Vaelora answered emotionlessly: > “Target acquisition complete.” Her breath caught violently. No. No no— She remembered now. Cerberus didn’t only experiment on children. They trained them to control weapons systems directly through neurological synchronization. And she had succeeded. She was Helix. The realization hollowed her chest completely. Kaedrin shook her gently. “Vaelora, look at me.” She slowly raised her head. Fear crossed his face instantly. Because her eyes had changed. Silver light flickered faintly beneath her pupils now. Helix synchronization. Active. The facility alarms shifted suddenly. VOICE SYNCHRONIZATION CONFIRMED Soryn’s voice returned softer now. Almost proud. “There you are.” Vaelora stood slowly. Her breathing became unnaturally calm. Controlled. Like someone else had taken hold of her body. Kaedrin stepped backward slightly. Not fear of her— Fear for her. “Fight it.” Soryn continued: “You were never broken, Orchid.” “You were designed.” Satellite schematics flooded Vaelora’s vision suddenly. Coordinates. Military launch systems. Global defense networks. She could see everything. Every satellite in orbit. Every missile system. Every city. Power pulsed violently through her nervous system. Too much power. Kaedrin grabbed her face carefully. “Vaelora.” His voice sounded distant now. Far away. “You know me.” Her expression flickered painfully. Fragments of herself still fighting beneath the programming. Soryn’s voice hardened slightly. “Complete synchronization.” Pain slammed through her skull again. Vaelora screamed. And every screen inside the facility activated instantly. Worldwide military satellites appeared across the monitors. Targeting systems online. Governments losing control one by one. Kaedrin looked horrified. “Oh God…” Soryn’s voice echoed triumphantly now. “The world finally belongs to us.” Vaelora’s hands trembled violently. She could feel the system connecting deeper. Taking her apart piece by piece. Then— Kaedrin stepped in front of her. Directly between her and the screens. His voice low. Steady. Real. “Look at me.” Vaelora’s silver eyes flickered toward him. Pain crossed her face. “I can’t stop it.” “Yes, you can.” “You don’t understand.” Her voice cracked sharply now. “They built this inside me.” Kaedrin gently touched the crescent necklace around her throat. The one Lyrielle gave her years ago. “My sister died saving you because she believed you were human.” The words hit hard. Very hard. Vaelora’s breathing faltered. Kaedrin’s eyes never left hers. “And she was right.” For one fragile second— The silver glow weakened. Soryn noticed instantly. His voice turned cold. “No.” The facility trembled violently again. Then Soryn spoke the trigger phrase once more. > “Eclipse remembers the fire.” Vaelora screamed as the programming surged back stronger than before. And above the arctic skies— The first military satellites activated.
