One evening, as they left the office, Alex turned to Emily and smiled. "You've been an incredible support system. I don't know what I would have done without you."
Emily's heart skipped a beat. "You're welcome, Alex. We make a great team."
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the tension between them was palpable.
"Would you like to grab dinner with me?" Alex asked, breaking the silence.
Emily nodded, and they walked to a nearby restaurant, the evening air filled with promise.
As they sat down, Alex shared stories of his past, revealing vulnerabilities and fears. Emily listened intently, feeling a deep connection.
Alex's heart raced as he led Emily to the rooftop, overlooking the city's breathtaking sunset. Their friendship had blossomed, and he couldn't imagine life without her.
"Emily, from the moment we met, I knew you were special," Alex began, his voice trembling. "I want to spend my life with you, but I need you to understand something."
He pulled out a small box, revealing a stunning diamond ring. Emily's eyes widened.
"I want to propose to you, but with one condition," Alex said, his eyes locked on hers. "We'll have a one-year contract. If, after that year, you don't feel the same way, we'll part ways amicably."
Emily's expression changed from shock to confusion. "A contract? Why?"
"I've been hurt before," Alex explained. "I need to protect myself. But I promise, Emily, I'll do everything to make you fall in love with me."
Emily hesitated, weighing her feelings. She cared for Alex deeply, but could she commit to loving him in a year?
"What happens if I don't fall in love with you?" Emily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex's face set in determination. "I'll let you go, no questions asked. But I promise you, Emily, I'll do everything in my power to make you mine."
