The Edge of Command

1011 Words
The Forest had changed. Elara could not have said how, not precisely, but she felt it the moment she stepped beyond the cabin's threshold. The air seemed thicker, the shadows deeper, the space between the trees more deliberate. As if the world had become aware of her. Or wary of her. Ronan led her into a part of the woods she had never seen before. The trees here grow closer together, their trunks twisted and scarred, bark dark as old blood. No birds sang. No insects stirred. "This place is old," she said quietly. "Yes," he replied. "It remembers things most of the pack has forgotten." They stopped in a natural hollow ringed by stone. The ground was bare earth, worn smooth by time and use. "A training circle?" she guessed. "A proving ground," he corrected. The word tightened something in her chest. He turned to face her, expression all discipline now. The warmth of the night before was gone, replaced by something colder, sharper. "From this moment forward," he said, "I will not treat you as fragile. If you lose control here, you will be hurt. Possibly badly." "I understand." "No," he said. "You don't. Not yet." He stepped back, widening the space between them. "Summon the shadows," he commanded. She inhaled, steadying herself, and reached inward. The reservoir answered. Shadows slid forward from beneath the stones, coiling around her ankles, rising like obedient smoke. "Shape them," Ronan said. She lifted her hands slowly. The darkness obeyed, forming two narrow whips that hovered, waiting. "Good," he said. "Now strike me." Her breath caught. "No." "You must," he insisted. "This is not play. If you cannot attack me, you will hesitate gen someone else comes for you." "I don't want to hurt you." "You won't," he said. "Unless you mean to." She hesitated. Then, carefully, she flicked her wrist. One shadow whip lashed forward. Ronan moved. Fast. He caught the shadow in his bare hand. Pain flared across his features. The darkness hissed, recoiling instinctively. "Again," he said through clenched teeth. she stared at him in horror. "You're bleeding." "Again." She obeyed. This time both whips struck. He dodged on, took the other across the shoulder, blood darkening his sleeve. Her stomach twisted. "Stop," she said. "This is wrong." "This is necessary," he replied. "Now listen carefully. You are not controlling shadows. You are commanding will." He circled her slowly. "Your power does not respond to force," he continued. "it responds to authority. Not dominance over others. Sovereignty over yourself." He stopped in front of her. "Tell the shadows to bind me," he said. Her heart raced. "Ronan—" "Do it." She closed her eyes. Not reaching. Not pushing. Choosing. Bind him. The shadows surged instantly, wrapping around his arms, his legs, his torso, pinning him in place. Ronan stiffened in shock. They tightened. Not violently. Decisively. He struggled. They did not yield. "Elara," he said slowly, "release me." She tried. They did not move. Fear spiked. "I--I can't," she whispered. His gaze locked on hers. "Then this is where training truly begins," he said quietly. Her pulse thundered. She forced herself to breathe. To calm. To assert herself not over the shadows... But over herself. Release. The shadows loosened, then fell away. Ronan staggered slightly, catching himself. They stared at each other. "You bond me without touching me," he said. Her voice shook. "I didn't mean to overpower you." "You didn't," he said. "You commanded me." The words echoed. Commanded. She shook her head. "That's impossible." "No," he said. "It's inevitable." A chill ran through her. "You're my counterpart," she whispered. "The bond... It goes both ways." "Yes," he agreed. "And if you are not careful, you could strip my will from me without even realizing it." Horror bloomed in her chest. "I would never-" "I know," he said. "Which is why you mulct learn restraint as much as strength." A sound broke the silence. A footstep. Ronan's head snapped toward the trees. Elara felt it too. A presence. Watching. Ronan moved in front of her instantly. "Show yourself," he growled. For a long moment, nothing happened. Then a figure stepped from behind a tree. A woman. Tall. Pale. Silver hair braided tightly down her back. Her eyes were an unnatural violet, glowing faintly. "Still alive, Blackmoor," she said coolly. Ronan's body went rigid. "Elowen," he said. Elara's breath caught. "My mistake," the woman said, eyes sliding to Elara. "You must be the experiment." "I'm not an experiment," Elara snapped. Elowen smiled thinly. "All Midnight-Born are." She circled slowly, studying Elara like a specimen. "You're stronger than I expected," she admitted. "You bound him already." Ronan growled. "You shouldn't be here." "And yet," Elowen replied, "the Council sent me." Fear flared. "They're not done with me," Elara said. "No," Elowen agreed. "They're preparing to take you." Silence fell. "When?" Ronan demanded. "Soon," she said. "Within the month." Elara's stomach dropped. "Why tell us?" she asked. Elowen's gaze lingered on Ronan. "Because once," she said quietly, "I was a counterpart too. And I watched the Council turn my Midnight-Born mate into a weapon." Her voice hardened. "I won't watch it happen again." She turned to Elara. "If you want t survive," she said, "you must learn not just to command shadows... but to command bonds." Then she vanished back into the trees. The forest exhaled. Elara's legs went weak. "They're coming for me," she whispered. Ronan took her shoulders firmly. "Then we prepare," he said. Her voice trembled. "What if I lose control of you?" His eyes softened. "Then I trust you to bring me back," he said. She swallowed. "I don't want power over you." "Good," he replied. "Because the only power that matters... is the one you refuse to abuse." She nodded slowly. Somewhere deep inside, her power shifted. Not growing. Refining. She understood now. This was not about becoming stronger. It was about becoming worthy. And that... Would be far harder. Author: I hope all of you are enjoying this book so far. Much Love, Katlyn
