Chapter 4

"When I first met you, you didn't even have a roof over your head. You had to fight beggars for a place to sleep." He extended the key toward me. "Stop acting so high and mighty. Take it." I swatted his hand away. "Keep this slum and rot in it with your ex-wife!" I said, pulling out my phone to call my father. The moment I took it out, Vera snatched it away. "You still dare to steal my phone?!" she shrieked. "This is the limited-edition phone Emmett bought for me! Only a hundred in existence! A country bumpkin like you from the slums, who's never even used a basic phone, and you think you deserve to touch this top-tier luxury phone?!" My brows furrowed tightly, my heart twisting in sudden pain. Back when the slums collapsed, Emmett and I got separated and couldn't find each other no matter how hard we searched. Amidst the piles of rubble, I thought he had died, crying my eyes out every day. When we met again, his hands were covered in blood, and he threw himself at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Alice! I thought you were buried and would never come back…" This limited-edition phone was one of two top-tier models I'd specially had my father custom-order at a high price, so we could keep in touch anytime, and to help Emmett look impressive when doing business. I thought he would cherish this gesture. Never could I have imagined that he would turn around and give it to Vera as a wedding gift! "This is my phone! Give it back!" I snapped and immediately lunged forward to snatch it back. Vera gripped the phone tightly and refused to let go. "Emmett, this is the gift you gave me…" she said, her voice trembling. As she spoke, she suddenly stumbled and let herself fall backward to the ground. Emmett's expression changed drastically. "Vera! The baby!" he cried. He caught Vera in time. When he looked at me again, his face was full of hatred. "Alice, you vicious woman!" he roared. "Guards! Throw her into the snake pit immediately!" My entire body shook violently, my heart lurched. "Are you crazy?!" I screamed. "Emmett, you swore you'd never let me set foot there, even if it killed you!" Back then, to buy him medicine for his fever, I was thrown into the snake pit by the clinic owner for sport. My entire body was bitten and torn, and I didn't dare go outside for a whole month. After Emmett's fever broke, he held me, his eyes brimming with pain. "It's all my fault. I didn't take good care of you…" But at this moment, his face was dark and gloomy. "I also said that I wouldn't let anyone hurt Vera…" he muttered. "Take her away!" I struggled desperately. "How dare you!" I shouted. "If you dare send me in there today, you will absolutely regret it for the rest of your life! I'm not trash from the slums. My father is the richest man in the capital! If he found out, he'd make you pay!" Not a single person looked shocked. There was only an overwhelming wave of hysterical, piercing laughter. "The richest man in the capital? Did I hear that right?!" "The daughter of the richest man, coming to the slums to scavenge and suffer? She must be out of her damn mind!" "If you're gonna lie, at least make it convincing! What a joke!" Emmett's face darkened. "Cut it out, Alice," he said through gritted teeth. "Why bother pretending to be something you're not? Lock her in the snake pit to teach her a lesson! Take her away! Also, rip that wedding dress off her! Don't let her bad luck taint Vera's wedding." Without sparing me another glance, he carefully lifted Vera from the ground and headed toward the parking lot. Several bodyguards rushed forward, roughly tugging at my gown. The hand-crafted haute couture gown was deceptively delicate yet durable; no matter how hard they pulled, it refused to tear. But their violent pulling left angry welts on my skin, some of them bleeding. I lay sprawled on the ground, staring in despair at Emmett's retreating back. "Emmett, you will definitely regret this…" I whispered. Just as my clothes were in tatters and I was about to be stripped bare in front of everyone and thrown into the dark snake pit, outside the wedding venue, several black Bentleys suddenly screeched up! They plowed straight into the car Emmett was about to get into, flipping it over! An imposing figure stepped out of the car. "Who dares lay a hand on my daughter?!" he thundered.
