RIVER I had barely stepped onto the practice grounds when movement caught my eye and I froze. Lexi was running, skates still on, helmet clutched under one arm, her head down like she was being chased by demons. Behind her, Coach Nelson yelled her name… my name, but she didn’t stop. She tore off the ice, through the gate, and disappeared into the hockey block like the place was on fire, and I stood there, numb. Fuck! A cold coil of dread wrapped tight in my stomach. I’d hoped she wouldn’t show up because this was exactly what I was afraid of. But she came. Why the hell did she come? What was she thinking? And now she just ran off in front of everyone.
