I gripped the phone so tightly that my knuckles went white as I asked River what he meant by 'I mustn't come.' “I want to come; I want to see you.”
“I want that too,” he said quickly. “But if your mom saw you here, she’d freak out. I’m worried she may come around or even be monitoring my visitors.”
I froze, my breath catching because he was right. She’d lose her mind. But still, the thought of not seeing him and being there for him twisted me inside. I didn’t understand what could have happened that was so bad that he ended up there.
“What happened, River?” I whispered. He sighed, and I could hear the guilt dripping from every word. He told me everything. He told me about losing control in front of Principal Taylor, about the yelling, and how it all spiraled out of control.
