RIVER I held Lexi for a long moment, not letting go until her sobs softened into shallow breaths against my shoulder. Only then did I pull back, my hands frantic as I searched her face, her arms, everywhere for signs of harm. “Did he-” I started, but she quickly interjected, wiping at her swollen eyes. “He didn’t touch me. I didn’t open the door.” Her voice broke, tears shimmering in her eyes again. “But… he scared me, River. He scares me.” Hearing her admit that made my chest ache, and I brushed a strand of hair from her face before whispering, “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” I led her to the bed, and she sat down, still wiping away the tears on her cheeks. Only then did I realize the door had been closed and my mother had left us alone. But it didn't matter to me if she hadn't.
