My phone had finally stopped ringing as I drove into Lexi's driveway. I let out a long sigh and shoved it into my pocket before getting out of the car. The front door swung open before I could even reach the stairs.
"Where have you been?" Mrs. Wilson's voice broke through the door, her gaze fixed on me, and before I could answer her first question, she asked another. "Why haven't you answered the phone?"
I apologized. "I couldn't answer because I was driving." It wasn't true; she had started calling before I even got in the car, but I needed to think about what to say first. So I could not respond.
Her eyes narrowed, dark with suspicion, but I continued on to her first question. "I'm coming from the hospital."
