Chapter 15 : Risk.
John took off the hood of his coat and bowed to the Alpha who glared at them all.
His satisfied expression had given way to a cautious but authoritative air. Then he sat down and said, "if you say so, everyone take a seat with me and give me more details."
The betas resumed their usual places, including John.
"My Alpha," William began. "If you allow it, we would like John himself to give you the details of the operation."
the Alpha turned to John. "Who would have thought we'd be sitting around this table again with you by our side. Go ahead John. Speak up, I'm listening."
"Alpha Kane, I am grateful to you for once again tolerating my presence and giving me the floor. Indeed, I discovered the lycans' hideout and I was able somehow to inform William who came to check. " Said John.
"We already knew that and I'm grateful to you." The Alpha snapped. "But apart from that, what is this defining role that you have played."
"If you allow it my Alpha," William continued.
"The plan I laid out to you was to make sleep as many lycans as possible and capture any that tried to escape. But for fear that you would refuse John's help, I failed to tell you that he was the one who would make a gas strong enough to put lycans to sleep. He was also the one who designed the artificial full moon device that allowed our Warriors to transform before the actual full moon."
the Alpha turned to the other betas, as if to verify the veracity of beta William's words in their eyes.
"That's correct Alpha Kane." Memphis added. "It seems he didn't have enough time to finish and it was in the field of operations that he ironed out the final details."
"To tell you the truth, the plan William offered you was actually John's. When we found out, Memphis and I were a little reluctant to continue, but the operation was already underway. We couldn't turn back." Finished Condor.
"If I understand correctly," resumed the Alpha, "lest I reject the plan he proposed, William had not mentioned John's input."
Then he turned to William. "What would you have done if things had gone wrong?"
"I would have given up my beta title and John and I would definitely have left the pack for good." William replied calmly. "But I have always had faith in John and he knew it. That's why he contacted me when he found out about this lycan gathering place."
"If I stick to your statements, it was thanks to John's help that we were able to capture the enemy." Declared the Apha Kane then he turned to John.
"I'm impressed. You have my gratitude. Your contribution deserves recognition. I will personally take care of informing the pack as soon as possible. Is there anything I can do to thank you? "
"Alpha Kane, it is I who thank you for the honor you do me to receive me again at your side. Nevertheless, I have a request to make."
"You are welcome." Said Alpha Kane.
"If there's one thing I know for sure, it's that my daughter and other missing werewolves are in the hands of the lycans who have infiltrated our pack. We can get information by interviewing these lycans. In the possible, we could even proceed with a prisoner exchange later on."
"John, your proposal is not bad. I will think about it, although I doubt very much that they keep alive those of ours whom they kidnap. But for the time being we must proceed tomorrow with the interrogation of the prisoners. Menphis, I leave this task to you. Let me know the moment you get any valuable information."
With these words the meeting ended.
***Darkfire.
The next morning, Asher was still asleep and he was immersed in a dream so beautiful that he had done very few like it in his whole life. He and Skylar were having fun running around laughing in a garden covered with fragrant flowers as far as the eye could see. Then they fell and began to kiss and declare their love to each other endlessly, promising each other never again separate.
But Ginger had gone to Asher's chambers early, again hoping to catch him coming back.
Room after room, she searched carefully, but silently so as not to be caught by a servant. Finally, she found him asleep in his room. But the creak the door made as it closed woke Asher up and disrupted this delightful moment he didn't want to see end.
Not having caught him as she wished, she was a little ashamed of herself but pretended to have come to visit him.
"Hello Asher." she said, pushing aside the curtains of her room vigorously, letting in a blinding light.
Asher who was lying on his huge bed, got up immediately, but without getting upset.
Ginger noticed that the light had bothered him, but was surprised by the small smile he still kept on the corner of his lips.
"I say you! Is it the news of our future marriage that makes you in a good mood? Or is it my little visit that makes you happy." she said, approaching him on all fours on the bed, then she continued.
"Despite the escape of that damn werewolf, with our marriage, we have something to cheer ourselves up and keep the pack happy. Don't you think?" she said when she was already close to him, holding his face with both hands before giving him a kiss.
"I can't believe our wedding is coming up soon. There's so much to do planning, choosing the dress, making the guest list, the menu..." raved Ginger before getting cut by Asher.
"Ginger can we talk about this later? I'm still tired." Asher said as he flopped down on the bed again.
"Oh yes! I forget you're just recovering from your injuries. I'll leave you. See you later." Ginger said kissing Asher on the mouth before walking away.
As he watched Ginger leave, Asher realized that her visit was not trivial. "I must now exercise extreme caution if I want to visit Skylar again." he said to himself.
But Skylar had spent the night thinking about her pack, torn apart by a difficult choice.
"Should I take the risk of going back to the blackmoon and confess everything hoping for the acceptance of Asher and our love by my pack, or should I stay and live my love here, within this organization, which will force me to live hidden for a duration that I do not know?"
These were the questions that tormented her.
But it had been several days since Skylar had breathed the air of freedom. She hoped to find answers if she reached the surface.
The urge was certainly strong, but she knew the risks.
She went out and found Twilight, Lyra's assistant.
"Hey Sky. Up already? But what's that cockroach you're wearing?"
"Hello Twilight." Skylar said with a forced smile to hide her worries. "Where's Lyra?"
"Lyra? She's having a meeting right now to fine-tune the organization's future plans." Said Twilight. "She's a valiant leader. Don't you think?"
"It's true that this role suits her." Skylar replied morosely.
"You, I have the impression that you need a change of air. Would you like to go to the surface?" Twilight asked.
"Yes I really want to but is it prudent?"
"Don't worry. We'll just pick some wild berries somewhere safe and come back. Besides, no one ever comes through here." Twilight replied confidently.
"Are you sure?"
"To tell you the truth, above our heads is an old chemical manufacturing plant that Grendel had built. But over time, we realized that these products were making employees sick. For lack of a solution to limit their harmful effects, the Lycan King ends up ordering the closure of the factory, much to Grendel's chagrin." Explained Twilight.
"I didn't know that." Skylar said.
"Obviously since you haven't always lived here. But for safety, before going to the surface, we always anoint ourselves with naphthalyte. It's a chemical that covers up the smell of lycans. Come on, let's go . We have to be back before the end of the meeting."
Unbeknownst to everyone, Twilight and Skylar made their way to the surface. A fresh air like she had never known crossed her, reminding her of the freedom she once enjoyed with her family in Blackmoon City.
At the same time, in the underground, Lyra finished her meeting and came to join Skylar in her room, but did not find her there. She and the others searched her in every corner without success. They also noticed the absence of Twilight.
Then a bad feeling crossed Lyra. "And if they had gone to pick berries on the surface. Twilight loves it. How irresponsible, that one." Lyra said in a panic. Before hearing behind her:
"Lyra, our sensors are telling us that intruders are approaching. It may be a search unit for the escaped prisoner. What do we do?"
Bewildered, Lyra looked down at the floor, pulling her hair. "We're all done for if we don't do something." She said terrified.
